Key contacts 6 1 February 2020 Service we provide The Inclusion Support Team is a multidisciplinary team providing support for children and young people from 4 – 16 at risk of exclusion. The team provides a range of core services for Brent schools, supporting them and families to reduce exclusions, improve mental health, attendance, engagement in education and attainment. Brent’s Inclusion Support Team The Inclusion Support Team supports Brent schools to bring about positive change in the behaviour of children and young people experiencing difficulties with their social, emotional and mental health development. Our aim is to improve behaviours for learning and reduce the risk of exclusion from school. Behaviour for learning support for pupils Therapeautic work Staff training and development School-based interventions Whole family support Advice and guidance on exclusions Our team is made up of: Inclusion Support Officers Behaviour Specialists SEMH Advisory Teachers SEMH Caseworker Family Therapist Alternative Provision and School Engagement Coordinator Family Support Advisors Who do we support? Access to the Inclusion Support Team is through a referral system to gain access to further resources including individual support, guidance, therapy and multi-family groups for children and young people who are: 2 Attending a Brent school or educational setting At risk of permanent exclusion Having mental health issues which impact on their life in school Identified as having Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or those with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) Disengaged from education Looked after and presenting with social, emotional or mental health issues Known to other services or agencies within the council Vulnerable groups, e.g. those exposed to trauma including domestic violence, substance misuse, sexual exploitation or bereavement Core offer School / Staff Support Specialist Interventions Pupil Support INSET training for behaviour Therapeutic group work Implementation of support management/behaviour for Multi-agency liaison and intervention for pupils learning strategies Cognitive Behaviour with challenging behaviours Induction support for NQTs Therapy Work directly with classes, and new teaching staff Facilitation of reflective small groups and individuals Behaviour for learning practice work discussion Pastoral Support Plans workshops group Development of Individual Governor and Headteacher Systemic Family Therapy Support Plans including training on Emotional management positive behaviour support inclusion/exclusion MAPA training Pupil mentoring In-depth review of behaviour Solution Focused Restorative approaches policy, systems and routines Approaches/Brief Therapy Pupil observations and De-escalation and strategies Staff problem-solving feedback for challenging behaviours consultation groups Indirect assessment through Advice to staff on Social and emotional classroom observation appropriate intervention development Partnership working with strategies Multi-family group schools, families and pupils Developing inclusive Transition support practices and the support for Multi-agency or Team SEMH around the Child/Team Risk management and risk around the Family meetings assessment Working collaboratively with Classroom observations and Early Help, Social Care, feedback YOS and a range of other services All support and intervention strategies are evidence based and researched programmes. This core offer is available to all schools and may include: 3 Inclusion Support Officers All Brent Schools will have a designated Inclusion Support Officer who will be the key contact for a group of primary and secondary schools in representing the Inclusion Support Team and signposting schools onto other specialist services. (Appendix A) Below are some examples of what Inclusion Support Officers can provide: Local authority representation at Advice and guidance to Headteachers when Governor’s Disciplinary Committee considering the exclusion of a pupil, with hearings & Independent Review Panels. reference to DfE / Council policies. Advice for schools about their ‘at risk’ of Advice to schools on school-based exclusion list and exclusion data trends interventions that can prevent exclusion. Supporting managed moves and transition Support the referral process into Inclusion Support Panel Advisory Teachers Our advisory teachers are able to visit schools to advise and support school staff on behaviour strategies and the development of school-based programmes. This may include: Development of school policies including Delivery of MAPA for school staff in-depth reviews Classroom observations for pupils Training for school based staff: nurture groups, displaying challenging behaviour playground projects and circle time Development of Pupil Support Bases Development of behaviour tracking Teacher observations, support and Anti-bullying interventions, playground projects / coaching social skills training Modelling good practice in relation to Delivery and planning of emotional literacy teaching and learning Delivery of bespoke staff training packages Support for school transition planning for schools Behaviour Specialists Our behaviour specialists are able to provide specific and tailored support for pupils that have been referred and this may include: Provide specialist consultation and Parenting support guidance for pupils with SEMH 4 1:1 behaviour support/ targeted Facilitating restorative justice between pupils and intervention plans peer mentoring training Group interventions / group workshops Peer mentoring/peer support training focussed on behaviour Pupil counselling and social skills Circle of Friends and circle time training/support Playground projects / Social skills training Successful transition and reintegration Family Support Advisers Assist in tackling underachievement by working in partnership with families, carers and pupils in a school context. They work to enable pupils, particularly the most disadvantaged, to have full access to educational opportunities and overcome barriers to learning and participation. Preventative and early intervention activities Deliver programmes of support to families and multi-family group Support a complex child and family workload Intensive and flexible support on behaviour management to families Teen Triple P parenting programme Empowering parents, carers and families Strengthening Families, Strengthening Solution focused approaches / Brief therapy Communities Working with Early Help, YOS and Social Accessing resources through Early Help Care Panel Alternative Provision and School Engagement Coordinator The Alternative Provision and School Engagement Coordinator ensures that pupils are referred to an appropriate alternative educational provision following a permanent exclusion and will also oversee the following: The progress of pupils in their new school/setting, Reintegration back into mainstream schools through Fair Access Process Identification of safeguarding issues identified by the new school Ensure the child has access to Careers Advice in years 10 and 11 Liaise with other professionals to ensure your child’s and the family’s needs are met 5 Inclusion Assessment & Referral Panel The Inclusion Support Team meets weekly to discuss referrals that have been made by Brent schools or educational settings. The panel will discuss referrals with a holistic approach thinking about the family as a whole. Some of the considerations the panel will make are: The underlying reason or cause for a pupil’s behaviour Identified and unidentified SEND need Family background and circumstance School-based interventions that have been tried and measures of impact Other agency involvement with the child or family The child’s educational history as a whole including their exclusion record Some of the outcomes as a result of the panel meeting are: Support for individuals, class teachers or whole school as appropriate Inclusion Support Officers providing bespoke and individualised support in relation to school based interventions Key worker allocation Support and advice for schools around Pastoral Support Plans for the pupil referred Involvement and support for the parent/carer through a Family Support Worker A Team Around The Child (TAC) Meeting Signposting or referral to other services within Brent or external agencies Observations of the pupil by an advisory teacher or behaviour specialist Key contacts and referring Referral forms are available from Inclusion Support Officers or [email protected] and we ask that all referrals are discussed with the Inclusion Support Officer prior to being made.
