Dr. Jung holds her doctoral degree in Education from Seoul National University(Ph. D and M. Ed.), and teaches several subjects such as ‘Lifelong Learning’, ‘Feminist Pedagogy’, and ‘Development and Education’, and ‘Social Movement and Lifelong Learning’. She has joined in the National Research Foundation of Korea, the Korean Society for Lifelong Education, the Korean Society for the study of Anthropology of Education, National Institute for Lifelong Educationas an executive member. She has published articles centered on the critical approaches of adult learning and cyber-culture, and books including Internet as a space of learning, and Researching Adult Education. She is presently researching the characteristics of adult students with Dr. Kasworm of North Carolina State University, and Korean immigrants’ intercultural learning process in University of North Carolina Asia Center as a visiting scholar. ■Kyoung-Ae Choi has been working as an associate professor and the head of Department of Educational Technology in Cyber Graduate School, Joongbu University. Dr. Choi, graduated Seoul National University(Ph. D and M. Ed.), had an experienceto work for Korea National Open University (KNOU) as a researcher. Now she teaches several subjects such as ‘Understanding Distance Education’, Systems Approach to Instructional Design’, ‘Quality Management of Distance Education’. With regard to research, her main concern is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in traditional or technol- ogy-based environment. -
Korean Dance and Pansori in D.C.: Interactions with Others, the Body, and Collective Memory at a Korean Performing Arts Studio
ABSTRACT Title of Document: KOREAN DANCE AND PANSORI IN D.C.: INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS, THE BODY, AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY AT A KOREAN PERFORMING ARTS STUDIO Lauren Rebecca Ash-Morgan, M.A., 2009 Directed By: Professor Robert C. Provine School of Music This thesis is the result of seventeen months’ field work as a dance and pansori student at the Washington Korean Dance Company studio. It examines the studio experience, focusing on three levels of interaction. First, I describe participants’ interactions with each other, which create a strong studio community and a women’s “Korean space” at the intersection of culturally hybrid lives. Second, I examine interactions with the physical challenges presented by these arts and explain the satisfaction that these challenges can generate using Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “optimal experience” or “flow.” Third, I examine interactions with discourse on the meanings and histories of these arts. I suggest that participants can find deeper significance in performing these arts as a result of this discourse, forming intellectual and emotional bonds to imagined people of the past and present. Finally, I explain how all these levels of interaction can foster in the participant an increasingly rich and complex identity. Park All Rights Reserved Abstract Exiled Envoys: Korean Students in New York City, 1907-1937 Jean H. Park This dissertation follows the activism of Korean students in New York City and the trajectory of their American education as it applied to Korea’s colonization under the Empire of Japan. As a focused historical account of the educational experiences of Korean students in New York from 1907 to 1937, this dissertation uses archival evidence from their associations, correspondence, publications, and the institutions they studied at to construct a transnational narrative that positions the Korean students operating within and outside the confines of their colonial experience. The following dissertation answers how the Korean students applied their American education and experiences to the Korean independence movement, and emphasizes the interplay of colonization, religion, and American universities in contouring the students’ activism and hopes for a liberated Korea. Daicing) empire. It spread to Chosŏn Korea and TokugawaM Japan largely through lexicographical compilations pro- duced in eighteenth-century Beijing to strengthen its position vis-à-vis the empire’s other languages. Those languages included the northern Chinese vernacular, Mandarin, which was also represented in these lexicographical works but in a position subordinate to the Manchu lan- guage. Korean and Japanese scholars used the Qing books to produce Abstract: The Manchu language studies of the Qing empire emerged in Beijing during the late seventeenth century and spread to Chosŏn Korea and Tokugawa Japan during the eighteenth century. The Qing court sponsored the compilation of multilingual thesauri and thereby created an imperial linguistic order with Manchu at the center and vernacular Chinese, or Mandarin, in a subordinate position. Chosŏn and Tokugawa scholars, by con- trast, usually placed Mandarin—not Manchu, Korean, or Japanese—as the leading lan- guage in the new multilingual thesauri they compiled on the basis of Qing works.
