2! 25 AUGUST 2019 ! ! The History of Our Lady of Fatima Statue ! ! Undoubtedly you have seen the beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima that we have in our sanctuary just to the right of the tabernacle. Do you know the wonderful history of the statue? Let me give you a brief summary. Around the year 1981 members of “Friday’s Angels,” a rosary prayer group who met every Friday for almost 20 years at Mary Immaculate Seminary to pray for priests, made a pilgrimage to Doylestown, PA. They saw a beautiful statue of Our Lady there. They were informed she was handmade in Fatima, Portugal. ! ! The prayer group was inspired and decided that they wanted one. They needed a fund- raiser. Northampton Borough held their 1 st Annual Street Fair that year. They got family and friends together and did what we do best in Northampton: they made food! They sold sausage sandwiches, halupkies, cabbage noodles, pogachials, funnel cakes and donated pastries of enormous proportions. They made $3,300. ($1,000 was given to EWTN for prayers for all who donated anything to Our Lady’s fundraiser. Some money also went to Covenant House in NYC.) The cost of the hand made statue was $2,000. The money was given to Fr. Marion of the Chestahova Shrine. He went to Fatima the next fall and had one handmade and brought it back. ! ! Here’s the really cool part. After obtaining the statue, Fr. Marion went to the Shrine in Fatima to ask the Bishop’s blessing on her, but he was away. The Nuns of Fatima allowed Fr. Marion to place Our Lady in the Capelinha (the Chapel of the Apparitions where Our Lady stood on her appearance to the children) for 24 hours. ! Fr. Marion arrived at the airport carrying the statue ! (can you imagine?) When the flight crew saw her coming, they moved both of them to 1 st class! Even more amazing was when Fr. Marion arrived back in Doylestown, the Bish- op of Fatima happened to be there! They had a special Mass and blessed the statue. ! ! The statue made many pilgrimages to EWTN, where she was given the honor of standing in the Chapel from where the daily Mass is broadcast. This was the only time that Mother Angelica allowed this to happen. The sisters there said that they received many phone calls inquiring about the beautiful Blessed Mother Statue. ! The statue traveled from house to house in the summer months and in the fall she was given a place of honor at Mary Immaculate Seminary. The seminary closed and Msgr. Campbell was gracious enough to give her a permanent home in our chapel here at Queenship of Mary. We used to bring her out to the main church in May and October of each year. I thought it appropriate to leave her permanently in church so we can all enjoy her presence and beauty every Sunday. May this story encourage all of us to know that Mary does truly watch over all of us. We are, after all, Queenship of Mary Church, and she is Our Queen and Mother. !

4! 25 AUGUST 2019 !

Saint Monica , also known as Monica of Hippo, is St. 's mother. She was born in 331 A.D. SUNDAY READINGS in Tagaste, which is present day Algeria. August 25, 2019 When she was very young, she was married off to the Isaiah 66:18–21 Roman pagan Patricius, who shared his mother's violent [Thus says the Lord,] “I am coming to gather all na- temper. Unfortunately, Monica Luke 13:22–30 was unable to baptize her children and when Augustine [Jesus said,] “Strive to enter through the narrow fell ill, Monica pleaded with Patricius to allow their son door, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but to be baptized. will not be strong enough.” Patricius allowed it, but when Augustine was healthy again, he withrew his permission. WEEKDAY READINGS For years Monica prayed for her husband and mother in law, until finally, one year before Patricius' death, she August 26-31 successfully converted them. Monday, Weekday: 1 Thes 1:1–5, 8b–10 / Mt 23:13– As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the reli- 22 gious life, but unfortunately Augustine became lazy and Tuesday, St. Monica: 1 Thes 2:1–8 / Mt 23:23–26 uncouth. This greatly worried Monica, so when Patricius Wednesday, St. Augustine: 1 Thes 2:9–13 / Mt 23:27 died, she sent the 17 year old Augustine to Carthage for –32 schooling. Thursday, Passion of St. John the Baptist : 1 Thes 3:7– While in Carthage, Augustine became a Manichaean, 13 / Mk 6:17–29 which was a major religion that saw the world as light Friday, Weekday : 1 Thes 4:1–8 / Mt 25:1–13 and darkness, and when one died, they were removed Saturday , Weekday : 1 Thes 4:9–11 / Mt 25:14–30 from the world of matter and returned to the world of light, which is where life comes from. After Augustine got his education and returned home, he shared his views with Monica, who drove him from her table. Though it is not recorded how much time passed, Monica had a vi- sion that convinced her to reconcile with her wayward son. Monica went to a bishop, who told her, "the child of those tears shall never perish." Inspired, Monica followed Augustine to , where she learned he had left for Milan. She continued her persual and eventually came upon St. Ambrose, who helped her convert Augustine to Christianity following his seventeen year resistance. Augustine later wrote a book called !Confessions , in which he wrote of Monica's habit of bringing "to certain oratories, erected in the memory of the saints, offerings of por- ridge, bread, water and wine." When Monica moved to Milan, a bishop named Ambrose told her wine "might be an occasion of gluttony for those who were already given to drink," so she stopped preparing wine as offerings for the saints. Augustine wrote: "In place of a basket filled with fruits of the earth, she had learned to bring to the oratories of the martyrs a heart full of purer petitions, and to give all that she could to the poor so that the communion of the Lord's body might be rightly celebrated in those places where, after the example of his passion, the martyrs had been sacrificed and crowned." After a period of six months, Augustine was baptized in the church of St. John the Baptist at Milan. The pair were led to believe they should spread the Word of God to Africa, but it the Roman city of Civitavecchia, Monica passed away. She was buried at , and her body was removed during the 6th century to a hidden crypt in the church of Santa Aurea in Osta, near the tomb of St. Aurea of Ostia. In 1430, Pope Martin V ordered her relics to be brought to Rome and many miracles were reported to have oc- curred along the way. Later, Cardinal d'Estouteville built a church to honor St. Augustine called the Basilica di Sant'Agostino, where her relics were placed in a chapel to the left of the high altar. Her funeral epitaph survived in ancient manuscripts and the stone it was originally written on was discovered in the church of Santa Aurea in 1945. Douglas Boin translated the tablet's Latin to read: "Here the most virtuous mother of a young man set her ashes, a second light to your merits, Augustine. As a priest, serving the heavenly laws of peace, you taught [or you teach] the people entrusted to you with your character. A glory greater than the praise of your accomplishments crowns you both Mother of the Virtues, more fortunate because of her offspring." !

“Be Still and Know that I am God.” ( Psalm 46) ! You have probably heard of “Centering Prayer,” but what is it? Father Lamb and Mary Anne Marakovits will explain and take you through an experience of Centering Prayer. ! ! Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breath- ing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relation- ship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. ! ! Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of mean- ing to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer ! verbal, mental or affective prayer ! into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to com- munion with Christ. ! Come join us for an hour of union with Jesus through the beautiful gift of Centering Prayer on the Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, October 1, 2019. We plan to meet on the first Tuesday of the month, and you can choose either a noon meeting or an evening one. ! ! Starting date : October 1 st . Time: 12 Noon to 1:00 PM. Place: Spiritual Center! OR October 1 st , 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the “Gathering Place” (Convent). ! Come join us for a deeper experience of prayer. !
