Saint Monica—Feast Day August 27th Most of what we know about Saint Monica, comes from the wri ngs of her famous son, Saint Augus ne of Hippo. She was born in 331 A.D. to a Chris an family, however, she was given in marriage to a Roman pagan, Patricius. Her husband was known to have a violent temper, as did his mother. But, she also was not deterred! She followed him to Rome only to find out he had le for Milan. Amen. She pursued him to Milan.
In Milan, Augus ne became influenced by St. Ambrose. Ambrose also took on the spiritual direc on of Augus ne. During these years of Ambrose’s instruc on, Monica kept up her fervent prayers for her son. A er all, they had worked to convert her husband and mother-in-law.
On Easter in 387, Saint Ambrose bap zed Augus ne. Although no one else was aware of it, Monica knew her life was near the end. She told Augus ne, “Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight..., all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled.” She died shortly a er in the same year. Monica was finally put to rest in a hidden crypt in the Church of Santa Aurea in Os a, Italy.
Many parishioners come to me to ask for prayers for their children who have fallen away from the church. Here is a popular St. Monica prayer:
St. Monica, I need your prayers. You know exactly how I'm feeling because you once felt it yourself. I'm hurting, hopeless, and in despair. I desperately want my child to return to Christ in his Church, but I can't do it alone. I need God's help. Please join me in begging the Lord's powerful grace to flow into my child's life. Ask the Lord Jesus to soften his/her heart, prepare a path for his/her conversion, and activate the Holy Spirit in his/her life. Amen

Safety ps for kids playing sports this school year.
Sports seasons start early, even for young children, and while it’s great that they’re out ge ng exercise and learning new skills, safety is s ll a top priority. It’s recommended that all children who are playing school sports have an annual physical, and relevant health informa on (allergies, condi ons, etc.) should be shared with coaches. Parents should make sure their children have the right gear, and that it fits and works wells. Children should stay well-hydrated, well-fed, and well-rested to keep up their energy and strength. Student athletes should be learning to be kind and fair, too, no ma er the outcome of the game. For more ps visit h ps://www.safekids.org/ p/sports-safety- ps.
