PASTOR’S CORNER First Communion 2018 at Saint Joseph Church W= ith great joy, we celebrated the First Communion of our second graders this last weekend. What a blessing for our children, and for us, as they join us around the altar of the Lord’s sacrifice, re- ceiving His Body and Blood in Holy Communion! Please join me in offering prayers of gratitude and our warmest congratulations to our children and their families! And, on behalf of the parish, I also ex- tend our sincerest thanks to Melissa Harrigan, Debbie Coyle, and, especially, to our school teachers and religious educators who give of themselves so generously as they share their faith with our young pa- rishioners to prepare them to receive the sacraments. Blessings on all!= = Receiving Holy Communion in the hand= When you approach Communion … make your left hand a throne for the right one, which is to receive the King. With your hand hollowed, receive the Body of Christ and answer, “Amen.” Tell me, if you were given some gold dust, would you not hold it very carefully for fear of leing any of it fall and losing it? How much more careful, then, should you be not to let fall even a crumb of something more precious than gold or jewels! After receiving the Body of Christ, approach the chalice of his Blood. … Bow in an aitude of adoration and reverence and say, “Amen.” (Saint Cyril of Jerusalem)= = There are two ways to receive Holy Communion : on the tongue and in the hands. In 1977, the Ameri- can bishops, with the approval of Rome, allowed the ancient custom of receiving Holy Communion in the hands to be restored. The option to receive Holy Communion on the tongue always remains in effect. = = In a delightful homily for children, Fr. Balthasar Fischer has wrien: “This, then, is the point of laying one hand on top of the other. It is as though the Eucharistic minister has told you, “Look! Your King is coming to you!” and you answered, “Yes, and I build a throne for him with my hands, a lile altar of my own.” … You can understand now, dear children, why it is not proper to reach for the host with thumb and forefinger; the image of the throne is lost, and the degree of reverence is not the same.”= = When receiving Communion in the hand, communicants should place one hand on top of the other, palms up, and hold their hands out at chest level in order to make their intention to receive Commun- ion in the hand clear. After responding, “Amen” communicants should step to one side and immediate- ly, with the boom hand, place the host in their mouth. We must be cautious of developing improper habits which could lessen our degree of reverence for the gift that is “something more precious than gold or jewels.” Rather, let us always bow in an aitude of adoration and say, “Amen!” = = Rev.
