Mother Bonnie’s Corner

For those of us who routinely crave sunny days, this time of year can be a challenge. The weather can be dreary and it’s often too cold to want to do anything outside. And at least for me, the daily news carries its own heaviness with constant talk of the shutdown and partisan politics tit-for-tat. I find there can be a feeling of being stuck, without a clear path forward.

Where do we look? Where can we find light and hope? The church calls this "the Season after Epiphany" or sometimes “Ordinary Time," when our lessons focus on events from Christ's life that reveal the truth of who Jesus is. It’s a time that encourages us to open ourselves to discovering Christ revealed in and among us, as we strive to walk in Christ’s Way of Love. What can this mean in practical terms? I find I can most easily carry Christ’s light when I take the time to recognize my many blessings, and be thankful. Finding our blessings can be done in many ways. We can be touched by opening ourselves to pondering a passage of Scripture or during a time of silent prayer. Or perhaps we see God’s hand in that unexpected conversation with a friend or from a time of serving others. Some may recognize God’s blessing through the beauty of a new dawn or the laughter of children or the unconditional love of a pet, for all are beloved gifts from God. Take the time to find that “something” that reminds you of God’s many blessings and give thanks. And we can take a step forward, with God’s help, to striving towards overcoming our very human challenge to love ALL our neighbors. It sounds so easy, but “does” hard, for divisive rhetoric and structural sin surround us, causing many of us to fail to recognize that we have brothers and sisters who are still regularly subjected to inequities and injustice due to race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or economics. There’s still much work to do to bring God’s peace and healing to the world. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “”We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world, for love is the only way.” February is African-American history month, a time to recognize the many contributions of our African-American brothers and sisters to our nation and the world. Here at All Saints, we will host a second Black History Celebration through Music on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Nave. Please save this date for a wonderful evening of music and learning about the history and cultural significance of African-American music. There’s great power in God’s love, the power to move us forward towards God’s Kingdom. May this season be a time of renewal for us all, as we strive to witness to others Jesus’ Way of Love. FEBRUARY NEWS FROM YOUR ALL SAINTS FOOD PANTRY

Mathew 25:35 “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Special thanks go to Northside High School; we received over 1,000 lbs. of food from their One-Act play. We have been sorting and storing this GREAT donation.

Our ‘mini’ clothes closet is thriving. Many people donated their winter clothing and this has been gratefully accepted. Toys were a big success during the holidays. If you wish, we will continue to ac- cept all clothing and toys (and household products are good too!).

Thank you for your support.

Hank & Mary Cordes ([email protected] )

THANKS TO ALL FOR ALL YOU DO TO SUPPORT OUR PANTRY.

Roots of African American Music African American music cannot be separated from the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the forced transportation of millions of African people across the Atlantic who were then enslaved. The cultures from which they were torn and the conditions into which they were forced both contributed to the sounds of African American music. Many of the instruments historically used in African American music, including the banjo and the drum, have antecedents in African musical instruments, and many features common to African American music likewise have roots in African musical traditions, such as the call and response song form and an immersive approach to singing.

Slaves' lives were restricted in innumerable ways, but among them included limits on literacy and property ownership. Music was therefore passed down orally, and early records of African American music indicate that songs changed frequently, not just from singer to singer, but also from day to day when sung by the same musician. Music was a solace, a community-builder, and voice for hope during enslavement and afterward, in the days of Reconstruction and then Jim Crow.

Although many of them are less well known than their later counterparts, there were plenty of professional African American musicians and singers during Reconstruction, including a group of African American university students, led by their music instructor, and billed as the Fisk Jubilee Singers. They sang African American folk music and religious music, including slave songs, to white audiences, and raised enough money through their ventures to fund a building on campus named, appropriately, Jubilee Hall. EYC News

The Diocese Youth Commission hosted its annual Senior DYC Retreat Jan. 4-6 at Camp Mikell in Toccoa. All Saints had 4 youth attend: Daniel Cline, Ariana Rivas, James Turner and Simon Turner. The retreat is a “mini summer camp” event that includes worship, music, morning programs, afternoon activities, outdoor activities and a dance. We hope to have some of our youth also participate in Happening 71 Feb. 15-17 for high school students and New Beginnings March 22-24 for middle school students. Weekly, the All Saints EYC contin- ues its quest to be better Christians through community, prayer and service.

The picture is from Senior DYC that was used as the promo from Bishop Wrights For Faith Instagram message. Simon is included with friends he has made over the years from other parishes in the Diocese, who all attended this year’s DYC Retreat. As the message states “It’s a gathering of people, a family reunion. Every nation, language and tribe.” This is what our EYC is focused on – the image that is left when “the bible finishes its story”.

Stewardship Spotlight

Ministry of the Month

Men’s Group

And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 The All Saints Men’s group is a loose organization of the congregation men. Our intent is to support the church and our fellow members by being available to assist all ministries, as well as to help our parishioners need with our feeble skills. Additionally, the group is designed to facilitate fellowship among the men.

2018 was a very active year for us. We worked hard to build that fellowship. We meet once a month on the third Monday at 6:30PM, usually at Just Tap’s on Watson but there have been other locations this year like El J’s on Russell and Buffalo Wild Wings. We held our first annual game and saw the Macon Bacon, an event led by BT Burton and was a HUGE success, an event we plan on repeating. We also created a fall get together consisting of a ‘Beer and Brats’ event while watching a ball game, another great event.

Our Job Jar effort is also going strong. We were able to assist over 15 parish members, and the church, with some chores … ranging from changing light bulbs to installing blinds.

The Men’s group, with much help, get together about twice a year to conduct a clean up of the grounds. Last spring not only saw a huge cleanup of the grounds but also a new fence. During the fall cleanup, a couple of our super dedicated members power washed the office area and all the sidewalks in front of the church from the office to the Parish Hall.

In 2019, we are already in stride with a Winter BBQ in January and planning a Fish Fry in April. We will also be continuing with the Job Jar, a summer ball game, and the fall cook out (Beer and Brats). Expect a huge spring clean up this year as well. Please come out and support your men’s group.

Dan Koning Stewardship Ministry 2019 Vestry is installed! The 2019 All Saints Vestry was blessed during the January 12th service.

Your 2019 Vestry Members: Senior Warden: Ethan Wolfe Junior Warden: Dixie Henning Clerk to the Vestry: Misty Cline Darlene Meloche, Dan Koning, Pierce Christie, Hank Cordes, Sandy Lee, Marsha Buzzell, Carl Rogers, Mary Mantiply, Anne Sanders.

Please continue to pray for your church leadership as they seek to serve Christ through their faithful work.

God's Valentine Gift We Need You Lord

God's Valentine gift of love to us Was not a bunch of flowers; In a world gone progressively mad, It wasn't candy, or a book with chaos all around us, To while away the hours. we seek refuge in the order and purpose of your law. His gift was to become a man, With evil sneaking, leaking everywhere, So He could freely give spreading heavy darkness, His sacrificial love for us, creating feelings of emptiness, So you and I could live. we hunger for your goodness and light. Turn us around, Lord, we pray; He gave us sweet salvation, and retrieve your sheep who have gone astray. Instruction, good and true-- Draw us to the satisfaction To love our friends and enemies of your purity and righteousness. And love our Savior, too. Cleanse us, and make us more like you, role models, examples, beacons, So as we give our Valentines, for others who are searching for meaning for their lives. Let's thank our Lord and King; Come, Lord Jesus. The reason we have love to give We need you, Lord. Is that He gave everything.
