MWUYF- Enriching the lives of rural youths The latest cuts in social programs have placed an undue burden on non-profit organizations that serve under-served rural Southeastern North Carolina. But with a lot of hard work and beating the bushes for partners, Men and Women United for Youth and Families came through for the chil- dren of the tri-county region they serve. For eight weeks beginning in June and ending in mid August, their Summer Enrichment Camp provided a safe environment for children from rural Columbus, Bladen and Brunswick counties. The Triple K Ranch in Delco proved the perfect setting for the campers to receive a three-fold educational, recreational and life skills experi- ence In the months before the camp start-date, the staff of MWUYF began to reach out for partnerships and re- sources. The camp opened on time with strong support and sponsorship by individuals and local businesses for children who otherwise would not have been able to afford the nominal fee. Out of the organization’s concern for creating a safe environment for area children, they applied for and re- ceived a grant from the Good Shepherd Fund Inc. for drug awareness and education. Another grant was secured through Four County Trust for recreation, education and enrichment. Other partners provided the resources for campers to receive breakfast and lunch, as well as weekly educational and fun field trips to various places. Some of the places the campers visited included: Lake Waccamaw State Park, Cape Fear Museum, the Mack Munn Exhibit at UNCW Randall Library, and a Robotics Science Camp conducted by NCA&T State University and the Co- lumbus County 4-H at the CSA building. There was also the popular Chris Wilcox Basketball Camp in Whiteville, and their own MWUYF Basketball and Cheerleaders Camp at East Arcadia School. Despite the challenges of sustaining the Summer Enrichment Camp director, Randolph Keaton sees the rewards for both the program and the campers. “We have kids that came in as 4-14 year old campers and, as they age-out at 15, some became volunteer counselors.” In addition, the WIA Program has placed a number of youth at the Summer Enrichment Camp with the goal of providing much-needed work experience. The organization through the Justin McLauren Scholar- ship provides three $500 scholarships to a college bound student at East Bladen, East Columbus and North Bruns- wick high schools. According to MWUYF director Randolph Keaton, “Our successes come from partnering with other agencies and organizations and our reliance on businesses and individu- als in the Riegelwood area communities that we serve. “They are our immediate partners and understand how crucial it is to provide a safe, learning environment for rural area youth and to expose them to educational and cultural experiences outside the community.” Submitted by: Earnestine Keaton East Arcadia Community
