UPPER CANADA RAILWAY SOCIETY BOX 122 STATION "A" TORONTO, ONTARIO Photo On Oct. 15, 1989, CPR's yard trackage in Goderlch, Ont. was almost completely dismantled, this being the western terminus of the 80- mile Goderlch Sub. from Guelph. This view, looking west toward Lake Huron, shows the station (which, hopefully, will survive) and the engine shed, right. ^^^^^ Western visitor: two of these Edmonton Transit trolley coaches are in Toronto for tests. The bodies were built by General Motors and the motors and controls by Brown Boveri; the 100-unit order commenced service in the Alberta capital eight years ago. This view of 178 was taken in Edmonton on July 13, 1983. _Dave Chalmers Survivor: 60 years young and still apparently going strong in CPR Engineering Dept. service was former ore car 376784, photographed on a siding beside the railway's West Toronto Shop, Nov. 4, 1989. It was built by Canadian Car & Foundry to the designs of the Hart- Otis Car Co.; the 25-foot car was designed to hold 80 tons of nickel ore. The railway ordered several hundred such cars in the 1920s. __john D. The facility will be connected to the MacTier VAUGHAN Subdivision by two 1,525 metre (5,000 foot) lead tracks; a wye track layout wfll permit access and egress from both north and south. -

CHAPTER 6 6.6 LAKE AND RIVER PORT FACILITIES 6.6.1. INTRODUCTION Water ports, by nature, are inter‐modal. People and freight traveling by water must arrive and depart by another transportation mode. Inter‐modal connectors are roads that provide access to water ports or rail services. Truck and other vehicular congestion on or near the inter‐modal connections affect ports that rely on trucks for commodity transfer. Improvements to roadways that connect to ports increase the efficiency of ports, benefit trade, and contribute to employment growth and regional productivity. With statistics such as fourth, ⅓, 58.8 million and 5.7 billion – as in: • Fourth in the nation for total water tonnage moved • The Ohio River System accounting for ⅓ of all annual U.S. inland waterborne commerce by tonnage • The Lake Erie System annually accommodates 58.8 million tons of commodities moving to, from and within Ohio • $5.7 billion in the annual value of Ohio port shipments on Lake Erie In 2001, more than 58,800,000 tons of commodities moved to, from, and within Ohio on the Great Lakes; this was a 7% decline from 63.3 million tons from 1995. The annual value of Ohio port shipments on Lake Erie equals $5,700,000,000. Coal accounts for 22,000,000 tons (39%) of the state’s total traffic‐iron ore, and represents 13,200,000 tons (22%) of the State’s total Great Lake tonnage. There are no water ports located in either Mahoning or Trumbull Counties. However, the two Ports of Ashtabula and Conneaut are located on Lake Erie north of the Eastgate planning area in northern Ashtabula County. -

Hopper car -Wikipedia Page 1 of 2 Hopper car A hopper car (US) or hopper wagon (UIC) is a type of railroad freight car used to transport loose bulk commodities such as coal, ore, grain, and track ballast.[1][2][3] Two main types of hopper car exist: covered hopper cars, which are equipped with a roof, and open hopper cars, which do not have a roof. This type of car is distinguished from a gondola car in that it has opening doors on the underside or on the sides to discharge its cargo. The development of the hopper car went along with the development of automated handling of such commodities, with automated loading and unloading facilities. Covered hopper cars are used for bulk cargo such as grain, sugar, and fertilizer that must be protected from exposure to the weather. Open Two-bay hopper cars of the Reading hopper cars are used for commodities such as coal, which can suffer exposure with less detrimental effect. Hopper cars have been used by Railroad railways worldwide whenever automated cargo handling has been desired. "Ore jennies" is predominantly a term for shorter open hopper cars hauling taconite by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway on Minnesota's Iron Range. A rotary car dumper permits the use of simpler and more compact (because sloping ends are not required) gondola cars instead of hoppers.
