BON VOYAGE 2020 has closed restaurants, hotels, and borders, making it impossible to travel safely or even plan a vacation abroad anytime soon. So it's a perfect time to traipse through Europe or South America with films that celebrate the self- discovery, humor, and loss that can happen when you are traveling. by Megan

THE DREAMLIFE OF ANGELS(1998) A drifter arrives in Lille, France and tries her hand at several odd jobs while building a rocky new friendship. Isa seems unanchored and unsure whether she will stay long enough to fit in to the rhythm of life in her new surroundings. Although the floating quality of this film can dip down into bleakness at times, Isa's sweetness and spontaneity made me want to watch over and over again.

THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES (2004) Steering away from any political commentary, this film focuses on Ernesto "Che" Guevara's 1952 journey from to Peru with his friend, Alberto Granado. They travel through the vibrant countryside not only by motorcycle, but by raft and on foot, discovering a landscape as memorable and distinctive as the people that live there.

BREAD AND TULIPS (2000) While on a bus tour to Venice with her unappreciative husband and sons, Rosalba is left behind at a highway rest stop outside the city. Instead of losing heart when she hears no word from her family, she checks in to a local hotel and decides to take her own journey of self-discovery and romance.

COLD FEVER (1995) Atsushi, a Tokyo businessman, travels to Iceland after a relative convinces him to visit the remote river where his parents died years ago. His meandering pilgrimage captures any traveler's bewilderment at local customs and unfamiliar language. While showcasing incredible and intimidating Icelandic winter scenes, this film endears itself on a small scale with a nod to the surreal circumstances that are sometimes the best memories from a trip.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (2017) In the 1983, 17-year-old Elio Perlman is spending the summer abroad while his father teaches in Lombardy, Italy. Oliver, an American research assistant, slowly changes Elio's perspective over the course of the long summer, against the backdrop of lush natural beauty in the Italian countryside.
