I have not sought elsewhere for corroboration or amplification of any point, save a few quotations from the Bible and have made but few comments myself. As such they played an important role in constructing, creating and enacting medieval notions of sanctity.1 This thesis analyzes the ways in which three different saints – St. Anselm, St. Bernard and St. Francis – performed miracles. It aims to show how their miracles differed, what claims the saints made about their own sanctity through their miracles, and more broadly what the miracles show concerning the religious movements of which the three saints were emblematic figures. The key question is: How did the miraculous contribute to the sanctity of St. Anselm, St. Bernard and St. Francis? This thesis intersects with a number of different areas of scholarship. Primarily it is a study of sanctity but viewed through the lens of the miraculous. To analyze the miracles, the idea of performativity will be drawn on, and finally, because each of the saints this thesis deals with are significant enough to warrant their own fields of study, it intersects with the biographical work on Anselm, Bernard and Francis. The novelty of this study primarily derives from the fact that no historians have applied the ideas developed by Judith Butler to the study of traditional – Great- Men – figures of history. -

Marsilio Ficino and Avicennian Psychology: on Prophecy and Miracles Naznin Idris Patel School of Religious Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2017 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. © Naznin Idris Patel 2017 Abstract Marsilio Ficino’s Platonic Theology is a philosophical work whose aim is to establish the immortality of the soul. Book XIII contains an account of prophetic visions and miracles that is often compared to Avicenna’s accounts found in his De Anima and Metaphysics. Indeed, Ficino’s relation to Avicenna cannot be overlooked. However, the nature and scope of this relation is not well understood. I argue that a close analysis of both of their psychologies will elucidate the debt Ficino owes to Avicenna as well as Ficino’s motives in doing so. A comparison of their theories reveals that Ficino’s synthetic use of Avicennian ideas allows him to make a compelling case for the immortality of the soul and its divine origins. He uses prophecy and miracles in order to demonstrate the power inherent in the rational soul when it manages to transcend its body. Teaching, Tradition and Thaumaturgy A Sociological Examination of the Polemic of the Pastorals by Lloyd Keith Pietersen For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The Department of Biblical Studies University of Sheffield August 2000 Summary of Thesis Much historical-critical work on the opponents in the Pastoral Epistles has resulted in sweeping generalisations concerning their Jewish and/or Gnostic nature. Literary analyses have been somewhat more promising in focusing on the stereotypical nature of the polemic but either fail to do justice to the urgency of the language in the Pastorals or fail to provide a convincing description of the opponents. This thesis approaches the problem of the opponents from a social-scientific perspective. Utilising labelling theory and social control theory from the sociology of deviance, the thesis argues that the Pastorals function as a literary version of a status degradation ceremony whereby previously influential insiders within the communities addressed are transformed into outsiders. Following a survey of approaches to the problem of institutionalisation, the thesis argues that the scholarly consensus (that the Pastorals reflect the institutionalisation of initially charismatic Pauline communities) needs to be revised. It suggests a developmental model for charismatic communities which involves both the process of institutionalisation and the simultaneous, thaumaturgical subversion of that process. This model arises out of the sociological analysis of the development of a contemporary charismatic community and it is argued that developments in the second century CE church, particularly the rise of Montanism, yield results which are consistent with this model. The thesis examines the Pastorals in the light of this developmental model and argues that they reflect a power struggle within the communities between those who advocate an ecstatic spirituality rooted in the memory of a thaumaturgical Paul and the author, who appeals to Pauline tradition and sees Paul as primarily a great teacher. -

Here we take the case of Pentonville Model Prison, established in 1842 with the aim of reforming convicts through religious exhortation, rigorous discipline and train- ing, and the imposition of separate confinement in its most extreme form. Our article demonstrates how following the introduction of separate confinement, the prison chaplains rather than the medical officers took a lead role in managing the minds of convicts. However, instead of reforming and improving prisoners’ minds, Pentonville became associated with high rates of mental disorder, chal- lenging the institution’s regime and reputation. We explore the role of chaplains, doctors, and other prison officers in debating, disputing, and managing cases of mental breakdown and the dismantling of separate confinement in the face of mounting criticism. -

BOOK REVIEWS INTERNATIONALE ZEITSCHRIFTENSCHAU FÜR BIBELWISSENSCHAFT UND GRENZGEBIETE 5 (1956-57) nos. 1-2. Edited by F. Stier. Düsseldorf: Pat- mos, 1959. Pp. xii + 256. $9.10. The general format of the present issue and the main rubrics are essen tially the same as in the previous volumes. There are, however, a few new subdivisions, some of which undoubtedly are meant just for this volume. For instance, a section has been introduced under the heading "Grundlagen und Grundfragen" which is meant to deal with the Pontifical Biblical Com mission, and a whole new heading entitled "Hermeneutische Probleme" has been added which contains a section "Bultmann" (certainly a tribute to the provocative character of his Entmythologisierung). It would appear to this reviewer that after the experience of five volumes a set of rubrics could be adopted which would not make it necessary to introduce temporary subdi visions. One new addition is a heading "Narration in Ancient Art" (sic) which has a single entry, namely, the symposium contained in AJA 61 (1957) 43-91. This appears rather ridiculous, since, if it is important to no tice articles on ancient art, then a heading could be introduced, and the sub ject given much wider coverage. In a foreword to this issue the editor takes occasion to disclaim any cause for a fifth-anniversary celebration, to thank his collaborators for their work, and to meditate aloud on the nature of IZBG. On this last point, he wonders whether the review, in order to avoid becoming a huge sewer, should not limit itself to strictly scientific articles; he concludes that the work of the bibliographer should not be that of a censor—a task which will be left to the reader who can sift the chaff from the wheat.
