India “For the teachings of Christ were Occult teachings, which could only be explained at Initiation” [ Secret Doctrine, Volume 2, Page 241] I In presenting my theme I must make it clear that I have drawn solely upon The Secret Doctrine for information. I have not sought elsewhere for corroboration or amplification of any point, save a few quotations from the Bible and have made but few comments myself. I leave it to the students to seek their own answers to the question that must inevitably arise in their minds as the story unfolds. As such they played an important role in constructing, creating and enacting medieval notions of sanctity.1 This thesis analyzes the ways in which three different saints – St. Anselm, St. Bernard and St. Francis – performed miracles. It aims to show how their miracles differed, what claims the saints made about their own sanctity through their miracles, and more broadly what the miracles show concerning the religious movements of which the three saints were emblematic figures. The key question is: How did the miraculous contribute to the sanctity of St. Anselm, St. Bernard and St. Francis? This thesis intersects with a number of different areas of scholarship. Primarily it is a study of sanctity but viewed through the lens of the miraculous. To analyze the miracles, the idea of performativity will be drawn on, and finally, because each of the saints this thesis deals with are significant enough to warrant their own fields of study, it intersects with the biographical work on Anselm, Bernard and Francis. The novelty of this study primarily derives from the fact that no historians have applied the ideas developed by Judith Butler to the study of traditional – Great- Men – figures of history. -

Marsilio Ficino and Avicennian Psychology: on Prophecy and Miracles Naznin Idris Patel School of Religious Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2017 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. © Naznin Idris Patel 2017 Abstract Marsilio Ficino’s Platonic Theology is a philosophical work whose aim is to establish the immortality of the soul. Book XIII contains an account of prophetic visions and miracles that is often compared to Avicenna’s accounts found in his De Anima and Metaphysics. Indeed, Ficino’s relation to Avicenna cannot be overlooked. However, the nature and scope of this relation is not well understood. I argue that a close analysis of both of their psychologies will elucidate the debt Ficino owes to Avicenna as well as Ficino’s motives in doing so. A comparison of their theories reveals that Ficino’s synthetic use of Avicennian ideas allows him to make a compelling case for the immortality of the soul and its divine origins. He uses prophecy and miracles in order to demonstrate the power inherent in the rational soul when it manages to transcend its body. Résumé La Théologie Platonicienne de Marcil Ficin est un texte philosophique dont le but est d’établir l’immortalité de l’âme. Le treizième livre contient une description des visions prophétiques et des miracles qui est souvent comparée aux rapports d’Avicenne d’après son de Anima et La métaphysique. Certes, la relation entre Ficin et Avicenne ne peut être ignorée. Toutefois, la nature et portée de cette relation ne sont pas bien comprises. -

Teaching, Tradition and Thaumaturgy A Sociological Examination of the Polemic of the Pastorals by Lloyd Keith Pietersen For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The Department of Biblical Studies University of Sheffield August 2000 Summary of Thesis Much historical-critical work on the opponents in the Pastoral Epistles has resulted in sweeping generalisations concerning their Jewish and/or Gnostic nature. Literary analyses have been somewhat more promising in focusing on the stereotypical nature of the polemic but either fail to do justice to the urgency of the language in the Pastorals or fail to provide a convincing description of the opponents. This thesis approaches the problem of the opponents from a social-scientific perspective. Utilising labelling theory and social control theory from the sociology of deviance, the thesis argues that the Pastorals function as a literary version of a status degradation ceremony whereby previously influential insiders within the communities addressed are transformed into outsiders. Following a survey of approaches to the problem of institutionalisation, the thesis argues that the scholarly consensus (that the Pastorals reflect the institutionalisation of initially charismatic Pauline communities) needs to be revised. It suggests a developmental model for charismatic communities which involves both the process of institutionalisation and the simultaneous, thaumaturgical subversion of that process. This model arises out of the sociological analysis of the development of a contemporary charismatic community and it is argued that developments in the second century CE church, particularly the rise of Montanism, yield results which are consistent with this model. The thesis examines the Pastorals in the light of this developmental model and argues that they reflect a power struggle within the communities between those who advocate an ecstatic spirituality rooted in the memory of a thaumaturgical Paul and the author, who appeals to Pauline tradition and sees Paul as primarily a great teacher. -

Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY2012 Sacramental Magic and Animate Statues in Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, and John Milton Jill Renee Delsigne ABSTRACT "Sacramental Magic" explores the animate statue in early modem romance as an emblem of the potential spiritually transformative power of objects. The tendency of New Historicism to "empty out" theology from Catholicism overlooks the continued power of sacred objects in Reformation literature. My dissertation joins the recent tum to religion in early modem studies-Catholic doctrine and religious experience explain the startling presence of benevolent animate statues in Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton; one would expect these statues to be empty idols, but instead they animate, revealing a real presence of the divine. I first investigate Spenser's Egyptian lexicon for the Catholic veneration of sacred images in the Temple of Isis in the Faerie Queene. Embedding Britomart's dream vision of an English empire in Egyptian mythology creates a translatio imperii from Egypt to Rome to England, transferring not only political but also religious power. The Isis statue's transformation ofBritomart bears striking textual and visual correlations to John Dee's hermetic Monas Hieroglyphica. For Shakespeare, ermetic magic emblematizes the sacrament of penance. Shakespeare's claim "to make men glorious" suggests that Pericles transforms its audience by effecting, not merely signifying, grace. -

Abstract This article presents and combines theories and philosophies on the spiritual rebirthing and ascension process emanating from psychology, comparative mythology, and comparative religion. It addresses various states of the soul encountered on the mystical journey to Divine Union and the various ways God assists human beings in completing this process, both personally and collectively. The analysis of the soul regeneration process — the science of the saints — addresses human sanctification during earthly existence and eventually beyond if the worldly life does not suffice to complete this process. Furthermore, the role of the Divine Feminine in salvation history is highlighted as well as the importance of the alchemical communion between divine counterparts in the inauguration of the Millennium of Peace leading toward the New Jerusalem. “There is no power that can stop me in my flight toward God” (St. Faustina, 1981/2005, §761). Keywords: Ascension; Divine Feminine; unconditional love; psychology; comparative mythology; comparative religion. This article begins by introducing the various states of the soul experienced in the ascension process, leading toward God’s plan to assist human beings in completing this process, in which the Divine Mother and the alchemical nature of sacred partnerships play a crucial role. Ultimately, it depicts the impending step in the psychological, cultural, and spiritual evolution of mankind, which will close the spiritual circle of life. Although some individuals have been prepared to assist and guide others, it is a collective journey that requires every individual’s active participation. -

From its revelation by Ngadak Nyangrel Nyima Özer (mnga’ bdag myang ral nyi ma ‘od zer 1124-92) in the mid-twelfth century, to its curation as a massive compendium of ritual knowledge for the Nyingma’s major temples in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Eight Teachings has supplied unique doctrines, mytho-historical narratives, and ritual programs that have undergirded the development of the Nyingma denomination. The bka’ brgyad’s wrathful iconography and apotropaic ritualism have provided imaginal and praxical resources for the Nyingma, and the Eight Teachings cycle was coordinated with emergent historiographical conceptions to advance a distinctive vision of Buddhist mastery and denominational identity. This dissertation traces a general history of the bka’ brgyad bde gshegs ‘dus pa from the twelfth through nineteenth centuries, observing how this cycle and its traditions proffered resources for Nyingma practitioners and institutions as they articulated, reformed, and exerted their denominational identity in response to extrinsic pressures. -

The present paper presents an alternative approach to the empirical study of magical practices. Rather than present an apologetic for magical practitioners or argue for a future area of research, the present paper argues that magical practices, by many other names, are already subject to serious scientific investigation, and to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.
