It is to be hoped, however, now that attention is again called to the subject, that the clue may be found that shall unlock their meaning, and that Northern 8yI"ia will be no longer overlooked by tho explorer. DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva tion. -

I have not sought elsewhere for corroboration or amplification of any point, save a few quotations from the Bible and have made but few comments myself. I leave it to the students to seek their own answers to the question that must inevitably arise in their minds as the story unfolds. 7 CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP IN THE CHURCH: WHAT THE APOSTLE PAUL HAS TO SAY TO MAX WEBER ROB MUTHIAH Abstract: In the fall of my freshman year at a Christian liberal arts college, I was sitting in the Student Union with a dorm mate, Doug, talking about matters of faith. As we talked, Doug asked me if I was charismatic. I paused, and then hesitantly said that maybe I was a little bit. Only later did I come to realize that we had been talking about two very different concepts. Doug was asking if I did things like speak in tongues and raise my hands in the air during worship services. I was completely unfamiliar with that meaning of the word, and I thought he was referring to a leadership or personality trait. These are two unrelated understandings of charismatic—or are they? In order to explore that question, this paper will begin by looking at how charisma is viewed in the NT. Where did the idea come from? What is its range of meanings? After these questions are addressed, the focus will be turned to the use of charisma in terms of specific grace gifts given by the Holy Spirit. From an examination of scripture, a set of characteristics that the charismata have in common will be set forth. This examination will provide a basis then to look critically at how the Apostle Paul’s understanding of charisma contrasts with Max Weber’s understanding of charisma. This analysis raises questions about the use of charisma in Christian leadership, an issue which is taken up in Rob Muthiah is associate professor of practical theology and director of field education at Haggard Graduate School of Theology, Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California. -

As such they played an important role in constructing, creating and enacting medieval notions of sanctity.1 This thesis analyzes the ways in which three different saints – St. Anselm, St. Bernard and St. Francis – performed miracles. It aims to show how their miracles differed, what claims the saints made about their own sanctity through their miracles, and more broadly what the miracles show concerning the religious movements of which the three saints were emblematic figures. The key question is: How did the miraculous contribute to the sanctity of St. Anselm, St. Bernard and St. Francis? This thesis intersects with a number of different areas of scholarship. Primarily it is a study of sanctity but viewed through the lens of the miraculous. To analyze the miracles, the idea of performativity will be drawn on, and finally, because each of the saints this thesis deals with are significant enough to warrant their own fields of study, it intersects with the biographical work on Anselm, Bernard and Francis. The novelty of this study primarily derives from the fact that no historians have applied the ideas developed by Judith Butler to the study of traditional – Great- Men – figures of history.
