Anointing of the Sick Each sacrament provides Grace, God's strength, to us during a different time in our life. Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation are the sacraments that make us become part of God's family. Together they are known as the Sacraments of Initiation. Baptism makes us adopted children of God. Holy Eucharist feeds us and strengthens us, helping us to become the person God created us to be. Confirmation is when God gives to us more Graces, more Gifts, through His Holy Spirit, so we can to do the work God created us to do. Holy Orders and the Sacrament of Marriage are meant to strengthen us as we choose a path of life that we will follow the rest of our lives. Holy Orders is for men only. It is the Sacrament that men receive when they become a Priest. As a Priest, they are set apart to live a life of service to anyone God sends to them. The Sacrament of Marriage is for men and women who choose to live no longer as a single person but become joined to each other in a union that will last until one of them dies. The Grace of this Sacrament helps each person give themselves totally to the other in the good times and bad times of life. Penance (or Reconciliation) and the Anointing of the Sick are the Sacraments of Healing. Penance allows us to make up with God for any wrong we have done to Him. -

While Christianity promises salvation to all who accept it, different theories have developed as to how salvation is obtained or transmitted. Understandmg the problem of the sacraments as the means of salvation, therefore, is a crucial soteriological issue of considerable relevance to contemporary Christians. Furthermore, sacramental theology exerts considerable influence upon ecclesiology, particularb ecclesiasticalauthority. The purpose of this paper is to present the historical development of sacramental theology, lea- to the contemporary understanding of the sacraments within various Christian confessions; and to discuss the relationship between the sacraments and ecclesiastical authority, with special reference to the Roman Catholic Church and the churches of the Reformation. Praying the Liturgy of the Hours The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office or the Work of God (Opus Dei), is a beautiful and ancient tradition in the Church marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. It is not reserved for clerics and religious (although they take vows to say it), but can also be prayed by the lay faithful. In fact, the Second Vatican Council highly encouraged the laity to “recite the divine office [especially Morning and Evening Prayer-the Major hours], either with the priests, or among themselves, or even individually” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 100). The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. The foundation of the prayer is simple – praying the Psalms – but in practicality can be difficult. If one chooses to purchase a physical breviary (the book that contains the Liturgy of the Hours, it can be challenging – especially if no one is there to show you what to do. However, after an initial introduction to praying the Liturgy of the Hours, it becomes much easier and soon it will be like clockwork. There are two main forms of the breviary. You can purchase a four-volume set entitled The Liturgy of the Hours from the Catholic Book Publishing. You can usually purchase for as low as $155. However, you can also purchase one volume at a time: This four-volume set contains prayers for all the hours of the day: Office of Readings (Major Hour); Lauds or Morning Prayer (Major Hour); Daytime Prayer (minor hour(s)-one or more of Terce (Midmorning), Sext (Midday), or None (Midafternoon); Vespers (Major Hour); and Compline or Night Prayer. -

Introduction to the Sacraments * There are three elements in the concept of a sacrament: 1. The external- a sensibly perceptible sign of sanctifying grace 2. Its institution by God 3. The actual conferring of grace * From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1131)- Sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us”. “Efficacious signs of grace” (CCC 1127, 1145-1152)- Efficacious means that something is successful in producing a desired or intended result; it’s effective. Sacraments are accompanied by special signs or symbols that produce what they signify. These are the external, sensibly perceptible signs. “..instituted by Christ” (CCC 1117) -no human power could attach an inward grace to an outward sign, only God could do that. During his public ministry, Jesus fashioned seven sacraments. The Church cannot institute new sacraments. There can never be more or less than 7.
