On June 25, 2014, the Adirondack Foundation hosted “Bicknell’s Thrush One Bird – Two Countries” at Heaven Hill Farm in Lake Placid. The event brought together people and organizations actively protecting the homes of this species. Representatives were in attendance from the Adiron- dack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Adirondack Coun- cil, Audubon New York, Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Wildlife Conservation Society, Olympic Regional Develop- ment Authority (ORDA), Adirondack Park Agency, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Northern New York Audubon, the Wild Center, and a group of people from Fundación Loma Quita Espuela and Consorcio Ambiental Dominicano, who work to protect the species in its winter habitat. In 2007, several conservation organizations estab- lished a dedicated fund for protecting habitat for Bicknell’s Low’s Ridge – Upper Dam Trail Thrush. The fund focuses on the bird’s wintering grounds on the Island of Hispaniola. Leaf Peeping and Birding! The event was an opportunity to learn more about Saturday, September 27, 2014 recent conservation efforts, meet the representatives from the Piercefield/Colton, NY Dominican Republic, recognize ORDA for raising public awareness about Bicknell’s Thrush on Whiteface Mountain, and thank Centerplate for supporting the fund. Joan Collins, Larry Master, and Pat & John Thaxton were in attendance on behalf of Northern NY Audubon. Mike Burger, of Audubon New York, gave the opening remarks. MOTHER'S FORGOTTEN GARDEN by Cory Daniel Zimmerman A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, Florida December 2008 Copyright by Cory Daniel Zimmerman 2008 ii Abstract Author: Cory Daniel Zimmerman Title: Mother’s Forgotten Garden Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. Jason Schwartz Degree: Master of Fine Arts Year: 2008 The thesis proposed for my M.F.A. in creative writing is a collection of conceptual American short stories written in a variety of forms that properly suit their respective subjects. Like a handful of miscellaneous wild seeds scattered over a tilled garden, the goal of the project is to represent the wild asymmetry of Nature via a collection of unlikely companions. For this reason, the conceptual form of each story often takes root in scientific or symbolic representations of Nature (i.e. sine and cosine curves, the yin-yang, etc.). The plot of loose soil holding these collective experiments together is their earthy thematic focus—namely, the way in which Nature has been systematically backgrounded by western ideology. On occasion, a story’s conceptual focus may stray from these ecofeminist principles, but only for the purpose of leveling a more critical or satirical eye upon common American ideologies. iv Table of Contents The cosmis joke redux ......................................................................................................

  • The Accent of John Lennon 5: British and American Pronunciation in the Songs
1 The Accent of John Lennon 5: British and American pronunciation in the songs Shinji Sato 1.1 Introduction British rock singers seem to use a certain amount of American pronunciation in their songs. Considering the fact that a style of music called ‘rock’n’roll’ is said to have been originated in the United States in the nineteen fi fties, it is not surprising that British youngsters who listened to it were infl uenced in their style of singing. However, this phenomenon seems to be limited to a certain number of phonemes and lexical items. This study aims to investigate this issue in detail, using the songs of John Lennon as its material. 1.2 RP, GA and Liverpool accent John Lennon’s native accent is that of Liverpool, and there are some differences from the British standard accent sometimes referred to as Received Pronunciation( RP), and similarities to the accent called General American( GA). Some of the main diff erences and similarities are shown below. 2 Table 1 RP, GA and Liverpool accent Liverpool RP GA examples accent LOT vowel / 㷜 / / ɑ: / / 㷜 / got, not, want, what BATH vowel(1) / ɑ: / / æ / / æ / dance, laugh, path BATH vowel(2) / ɑ: / / æ / / ɑ: / can't, part, bar STRUT vowel / ʌ / / ʌ / / 㷚 / love, sun, come rhoticity non-rhotic rhotic non-rhotic hard, girl, more, there intervocalic /t/[ t ] [ 㶵 (] tap)[ 㶵 ]( tap) better, getting, let it Note: LOT, BATH, and STRUT represent the keywords used by Wells(1982) . • Magic and Mermaids: Fairy Tales Revisited
Magic and Mermaids: Fairy Tales Revisited Senior Creative Writing Project Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For a Degree Bachelor of Arts with A Major in Literature at The University of North Carolina at Asheville Spring 2016 By Amily Sommers Thesis Director Katherine Min Thesis Advisor Cynthia Chadwick 1 The Porrectus Pearl Everything was quiet as Jamie walked down the cracked pavement of the old service road that wound around the back edge of town. There were a few houses on the left, old and falling apart from disuse, with overgrown lawns threatening to swallow the structures whole. The forest was on the right, huge and imposing. The trees were old and tall, their overlapping branches tied together by trailing vines, and the ground was packed with undergrowth. Despite its intimidating appearance, local teenagers were often caught sneaking into or out of the forest. Some of them went on their own, dared by their friends and eager to prove that they weren’t cowards. The stories of what happened to anyone who ventured too closely to the house on the other side were well-known. Many were couples, sneaking off in search of privacy. Jamie snorted. Nothing says romance like fear and rule breaking. Of course, Jamie didn’t really understand relationships. Teenage flings never lasted, so why bother putting one’s limited amount of time and energy into a relationship that would no doubt end as quickly as it began? Even most of the married adults in the town seemed to tolerate each other more than like each other.
