This thesis delves into the interrelationship of their respective work with three main aspects of the 21st century reality: the omnipresent world of images in our culture, the scientific paradigm and the use of new technologies. The study of their work has led me to propose the birth of a new literature that 1. articulates the “pictorial turn” by recognizing how the image, mostly digital, has become the protagonist of the new mode of communication; 2. implements the dialogue between the so called “two cultures” (humanities and sciences). In the sense, both our writers have a scientific background (Fernández Mallo is a physicist and Moreno a mathematician) and 3. shows the emergence of a net of global connections by establishing a dialogue with the world of Internet and new technologies. I ultimately propose that the work of iv Agustín Fernández Mallo and Javier Moreno is part of the Spanish speaking world literary response to the hypercomplexity and entanglement of the present Weltanshauung, one that shows traces of overcoming the paradigm of classical postmodernism by introducing the perspective of reenchantment throughout the above-mentioned vectors: the image, science and new technologies. v RESUMEN HACIA UN REENCANTAMIENTO POSTHUMANISTA: POESÍA, CIENCIA Y NUEVAS TECNOLOGÍAS SEPTIEMBRE 2012 MARTA DEL POZO ORTEA, B.A., UNIVERSIDAD DE OVIEDO, ESPAÑA M.A., UNIVERSIDAD DE MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSIDAD DE MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directora: Professor Barbara Zecchi El siguiente estudio de carácter interdisciplinario analiza la obra de dos autores contemporáneos de la literatura española peninsular, Agustín Fernández Mallo y Javier Moreno, desde el posicionamiento posthumanista que considera el continuo y la inseparabilidad tanto epistemológica como ontológica de las prácticas culturales contemporáneas. • Ingobernable: All Past Roads Lead to the Future
Ingobernable: All Past Roads Lead to the Future Today Mediático is delighted to present an article on the Netflix series Ingovernable by Pablo Zavala, Ph.D. candidate at Washington University in St. Louis. His primary research focuses on the representation of “the people,” broadly construed, in Mexican print culture at the beginning of the twentieth century. His dissertation is titled, “Forging a People: Visual Culture in Mexico’s Magazines and Newspapers, 1917-1960,” and analyzes avant-garde, socialist, communist, governmental, and artistic outlets in their dialogue between civil society, artists, and the State in the (re)presentation of the people, or the masses. His academic work has explored similar connections in film, literature, and in contemporary cases of femicides in Ciudad Juárez and their intermedial representations. His article “La producción antifeminicidista mexicana: autoría, representación y feminismo en la frontera juarense” was published in Chasqui in 2016. “Ingobernable: All Past Roads Lead to the Future” by Pablo Zavala When I first heard about Ingobernable (Ungovernable Ibarra, 2017) I was not immediately drawn to it, largely because of my own lack of fondness for the excesses of the telenovela form. But Ingobernable, is a series which makes evident the value of a popular form like the telenovela and even its radical potential (López 1991: 596–606). Ingobernable the new Netflix series makes use of both the telenovela and the political thriller format. It follows in the footsteps of other Netflix popular Spanish-language series Club de Cuervos (Alazraki, 2015), the first one ever created in that language by the online streaming service and Narcos (Bernard, Brancato, Miro, 2015-).

Mexican Melodrama in the Age of Netflix: Algorithms for Cultural Proximity Melodrama mexicano en la era de Netflix: ELIA MARGARITA algoritmos para la proximidad cultural CORNELIO-MARÍ1 DOI: https://doi.org/10.32870/cys.v2020.7481 http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5495-1870 By using algorithms to track the data of their users in Mexico, Netflix has managed to solve the equation of cultural proximity. Since 2015 it has produced original series that include melodramatic traits, even if they align with genres like comedy, biopic and political thriller. Applying industrial and textual analysis, this article argues that Netflix has established a love-hate relationship with Mexican melodrama, making fun of its conventions but using them nevertheless. It concludes that algorithms have the potential to transform Internet TV providers into competitors for local producers. KEYWORDS: Netflix, InternetTV , algorithms, melodrama, cultural proximity, telenovela.

Its main goal is to understand why contemporary authors strive to incorporate different forms of the visual into linguistic texts. I argue that in a world full of crisis and ruins (in the material and political realm, in language, in meaning), the image becomes a fruitful means of exploring aesthetic and conceptual problems that lead the viewer into new sensible experiences. My analysis gravitates around three main theoretical points: the role that is given to the spectator (Rancière); the technique of montage as a means of reaching a visual logic (Benjamin); and how this visual logic helps the viewer get immersed into a “syntax of feeling” (Nancy).

  • Netflix and the Global Flow of Quality Programming
Netflix and the Global Flow of Quality Programming Joe Straubhaar, University of Texas at Austin This paper will examine how audiences in Latin American are approaching Netflix as a source of quality programming, relative to their national and regional options. The paper will argue that Latin American audiences are being socially and economically stratified in ways that produce a larger audience for Netflix among the middle and upper middle-class than would have been the case 10 years ago. It is interesting that Netflix is to first major international target countries both for basic operations and for local coproduction. Brazil produced one of Netflix’s initial international hits, Narcos, and in Mexico, is collaborating with several well-known Mexican actors and actresses and local producers to produce both national and regional hits, such as Ingobernable (Ungovernable). Netflix seems to be calculating that Brazil and Mexico, and elsewhere in Latin America as well, will be important markets for them in their global expansion. Working with audience data from Kantar Media, we have the opportunity to examine several possible ideas about Netflix’s strategy toward audiences with actual audience preference data from eight countries in the region including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico as well as several smaller countries. This reveals how audiences are reacting to programming from several world regions including the US Europe and Latin America, see figure 1, which closely resembles Netflix's overall strategy, which gives us a chance to consider how Netflix is approaching programming in the region. It also gives us a chance to see the likely audience response to Netflix's strategy of increased transnational flow from not only the United States, but also Europe and other parts of Latin America.
