COUNTIES IN FIGURES 3 SAATEKS FOREWORD SAATEKS Esimene kogumik “Maakonnad arvudes. Counties in Figures” ilmus 1997. aastal. Sellest ajast on sama pealkirjaga kogumik ilmunud igal aastal, niisiis on praegune juubelikogumik ehk kümnes. Koostamise käigus ei pööranud tegijad sellele tähelepanu, ometi on juhtunud nii, et seekordne kogumik erineb varasematest üsnagi oluliselt. Eelmine suurem sisuline muutus toimus viiendas kogumikus — siis avaldati esimest korda kokkuvõtlik ülevaade Eesti piirkondlikust arengust ja on üsnagi tõenäoline, et just tänu sellele kogumikule on Eesti regionaalarengu strateegia ainuke riiklik strateegia, mille täitmise mõõdetavatest ees- märkidest iga aasta raamatus ülevaade antakse. Seni on Statistikaamet koostanud aastas kaks maakondlikku tasandit käsitlevat piirkondlikku kogumikku: “Maakonnad arvudes. Counties in Figures” ja “Eesti piirkondlik statistika. Regional Statistics of Estonia”. Nende kõige olulisem vahe seisnes selles, et esimene vaatles andmeid sorteerituna järjekorras maakond – valdkond ja teine järjekorras valdkond – maakond. Olukorras, kus kasutatakse eelkõige elektroonilisi andmebaase, ei ole otstarbekas koostada kahte kogumikku ja avaldada suures osas dubleerivaid andmeid. Tegijad otsustasid ühendada mõlema kogumiku tugevad küljed ning edaspidi koostada vaid ühe kogumiku — “Maakonnad arvudes. Counties in Figures”. Muudatuse mõte oli suurendada analüütiliste ülevaadete mahtu ja kvaliteeti ning lisada kogumikule CD, millel oleks miniandmebaas maakondade kohta. Peab tunnistama, et esimesel korral ei õnnestunud kõiki häid kavatsusi teoks teha, kuid kogumiku koostamise käik veenis selles, et oleme õigel teel ning kui lugejad meid toetavad, on Eestis edaspidi vähemalt üks väga hea maakondlikku arengut käsitlev

A fifth update of the Boreal list is therefore necessary.
