Seeing the Future with General Idea SEEING THE FUTURE WITH GENERAL IDEA What the art of AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal can teach us about tomorrow What does the future hold? Who knows. But back in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, General Idea (GI) did a pretty good job of predicting it. The three-man Canadian art group, whose members included AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal, addressed the world’s last major pandemic—AIDS— with such candor and brilliance that we’re using today’s newsletter to look at what GI’s art might tell us about what lies ahead and how to handle it. Using every available form of mass communication—including TV, mail, balloons, and contests—the artists created works they could spread “like a media virus.” From 1987 onward, their output became exclusively focused on bringing attention to the pandemic; Partz and Zontal were later diagnosed with HIV (in 1994 both died of causes related to AIDS). As ACI’s publication General Idea: Life & Work by Sarah E. K. Smith reveals, today it is clear that GI’s art had remarkable prescience. The following excerpts show what we can learn from it. Bronson, Partz, and Zontal refused to apply an individual signature to any of their works, believing that art’s future lay in collaboration, appropriation, and subversion. Their group identity superseded their individuality, and the non-hierarchical, cooperative, and community approach freed them from “the tyranny of individual genius.” The artists upheld the tripartite structure as a reason for their long-term success and stability between 1969 and 1994. Their conceptual projects and working method stand as part of their legacy, especially as collective art production has gained ground in the contemporary era. GI’s focus on self-documentation foreshadows Facebook, and the group’s belief in the end of the individual signature has come to pass on websites like Wikipedia. Read More TAKE IT OUTSIDE General Idea, Imagevirus (Amsterdam), 1991, various collections In 1987 General Idea created a work, titled AIDS, that mimicked the famous painting LOVE, 1966, by Robert Indiana (1928–2018), but replaced the word “LOVE” with “AIDS.” From this moment on, the AIDS “logo,” as it became known, was central to GI’s oeuvre, with many projects being presented as temporary public art. For example, the group created an extensive series of posters, painting installations, a sculpture, and an animation for the Spectacolor Board in Times Square, New York City, all of which were based on the AIDS logo; in Amsterdam the artists covered city trams with it, recording the intervention in Imagevirus (Amsterdam), 1991. The group’s aim was to use the series as a means to name what, at the time, was unnameable and raise AIDS as a topic of discussion in the public sphere. Read More MAKE THE EVERYDAY INTO ART General Idea, One Year of AZT, 1991, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa In 1989 and 1990, respectively, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal were diagnosed with HIV. One Year of AZT speaks to how the passing of time became marked by medications, with pills organized in daily and monthly groups. In this installation, the artists have created plastic capsules that represent the antiretroviral drug AZT (azidothymidine), which became essential to their routine. “Your watch is ringing little bells every two to four hours and you have to take two of this and four of that,” said Bronson. “[The work] was to create that environment, a pill environment. To reproduce that feeling. To give it a physical sense of what it’s like to be surrounded by pills … a very clinical atmosphere.” Read More BEWARE OF CONTRADICTIONS General Idea, Fin de siècle, 1990, private collection This deeply charged installation—made of three hundred 120- by 240-centimetre sheets of Styrofoam that fill the room—is one of the last self-portraits General Idea created. Viewers are meant to question the placement of the adrift seal pups, who represent the trio. Are they playful and cute, or a prelude to disaster? Here GI offers a poignant commentary on those struck by the AIDS pandemic, as well as on the planet’s complex ecological situation. While environmentalists were attempting to save the seal population, the Canadian government was offering financial incentives for the animals’ deaths as a means to deal with overpopulation. Read More CREATIVITY AT A DISTANCE General Idea, Eye of the Beholder, 1989, various collections General Idea’s creativity continued to surge after 1986 when they physically separated, yet continued working together. After the group recognized New York as a key site for the circulation of artists and curators from Europe, Zontal spent more of his time in New York, while Partz remained based in Toronto, and Bronson travelled between the two cities. Despite geographical distance the trio kept their collaboration going via calls, faxes, and frequent visits, during which they made items like this chenille crest—one of GI’s “multiples”—low-cost works of art meant to be distributed in the manner of books, rather than as precious art objects. These works affirmed that over the years GI had developed a unique language and a group mind. Read More FOCUS ON THE FUTURE General Idea, The Three Graces (Mural Fragment from the Villa Dei Misteri of the 1984 Miss General Idea Pavillion), 1982, Vancouver Art Gallery Inspired by a desire to interrogate glamour, fame, and the art world, General Idea staged a performance at the Art Gallery of Ontario: The 1971 Miss General Idea Pageant, an event that challenged gender norms as contestants included men and women. It became a critical part of the group’s identity, but in 1977 the artists decided to forge a new future by fictionalizing the past. The Estate of General Idea (1969-1994) had their first exhibition with the Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery on view in Chelsea through January 13, featuring several “ziggurat” paintings from the late 1960s, alongside works on paper, photographs and ephemera that highlight the central importance of the ziggurat form in the rich practice of General Idea. It got me thinking about the unique Canadian trio’s sumptuous praxis and how it evolved from humble roots in the underground of the early 1970s to its sophisticated position atop the contemporary art world of today. One could say that the ziggurat form is a perfect metaphor for a staircase of their own making that they ascended with grace and elegance, which is true. But they also had to aggressively lacerate and burn their way to the top, armed with real fire, an acerbic wit and a penchant for knowing where to apply pressure. Even the tragic loss of two thirds of their members along the way did not deter their rise, making the unlikely climb all the more heroic. Canadian Citizen Education: MFA, Gold Medal Award, OCAD University 2017 BIO Annette Mangaard is a Danish born Canadian media artist and filmmaker who has recently completed her Masters in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design. Her installation work has been shown around the world including: the Armoury Gallery, Olympic Site in Sydney Australia; Pearson International Airport, Toronto; South-on Sea, Liverpool and Manchester, UK; Universidad Nacional de Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina; and Whitefish Lake, First Nations, Ontario. Mangaard has completed more then 16 films in more than a decade as an independent filmmaker. Her feature length experimental documentary on photographer Suzy Lake and the history of feminism screened as part of the INTRODUCING SUZY LAKE exhibition October 2014 through March 2015 at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Mangaard was nominated for a Gemini for Best Director of a Documentary for her one hour documentary, GENERAL IDEA: ART, AIDS, AND THE FIN DE SIECLE about the celebrated Canadian artists collective which premiered at Hot Doc’s in Toronto then went on to garner accolades around the world. Mangaard’s one hour documentary KINNGAIT: RIDING LIGHT INTO THE WORLD, about the changing face of the Inuit artists of Cape Dorset premiered at the Art Gallery of Ontario and was invited to Australia for a special screening celebrating Canada Day with the Canadian High Commission. Mangaard’s body of work was presented as a retrospective at the Palais de Glace, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009 and at the PAFID, Patagonia, Argentina in 2013. In 1990 Mangaard was invited to present solo screenings of her films at the Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver, Canada and in 1991 at the Kino Arsenal Cinematheque in Berlin, West Germany.

    John Boyle, Greg Curnoe and Joyce Wieland: Erotic Art and English Canadian Nationalism by Matthew Purvis A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Mediations Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Matthew Purvis i Abstract This dissertation concerns the relation between eroticism and nationalism in the work of a set of English Canadian artists in the mid-1960s-70s, namely John Boyle, Greg Curnoe, and Joyce Wieland. It contends that within their bodies of work there are ways of imagining nationalism and eroticism that are often formally or conceptually interrelated, either by strategy or figuration, and at times indistinguishable. This was evident in the content of their work, in the models that they established for interpreting it and present in more and less overt forms in some of the ways of imagining an English Canadian nationalism that surrounded them. The dissertation contextualizes the three artists in the terms of erotic art prevalent in the twentieth century and makes a case for them as part of a uniquely Canadian mode of decadence. Constructing my case largely from the published and unpublished writing of the three subjects and how these played against their reception, I have attempted to elaborate their artistic models and processes, as well as their understandings of eroticism and nationalism, situating them within the discourses on English Canadian nationalism and its potentially morbid prospects.     AA Bronson Radical Asshole ‘…the use of irony was itself serious…’ – AA Bronson on General Idea, in The Confession of AA Bronson (2011) AA Bronson thinks his butt is revolutionary. That may be the case – I haven’t tried it – but I’m not quoting him fairly. He thinks all assholes are revolutionary. In this he joins proto-queer thinker Guy Hocquenghem, who argued that the liberation of anal pleasure from shame was one way to remake society as a whole. Homosexuality is dangerous, he claimed in Homosexual Desire (1972), because it shows that eroticism is not tied to reproduction. Male receptivity further disturbs the masculine/feminine, active/passive oppositions which uphold patriarchal authority and by extension marriage or other systems of ownership. This undoing of gendered mastery finds echoes in Bronson’s earlier work as a member of General Idea. From their mock beauty pageants in which the artist becomes feminised commodity, to their pose as pampered poodles, they mercilessly satirised the singular (straight male) artistic genius as a myth of the media and marketplace. But the deaths of his partners and collaborators Jorge Zontal and Felix Partz from AIDS in 1994, and his reversion to working alone, caused not only a personal but an artistic crisis for Bronson. How could he represent himself without betraying the group’s critique of the artist as gifted individual? While his most recent work has sought to memorialise those lost to the pandemic and histories of homophobic persecution, his decision to summon the queerly departed by posing, like Joseph Beuys, as a shaman, appears to abandon the principles of GI.

Introduction: On the Idea of Writing as While writing might be thought of as a form of Conversing About Hearing as Seeing asynchronous conversation, I much prefer the active, synchronous, face to face, sonorous kind… having Writing can sometimes be a challenge. It can people in a room together, each enjoying the other’s feel very solitary, sort of like talking at company, and speaking with each other from a place of someone who might not really be there. This isn’t mutual interest and respect. The energy and positivity to deny its importance, as I certainly enjoy of such encounters is physically audible to us: reading and therefore have no choice but to emotion and feeling can actually be heard. It is this respect such textual assembly as a vital means love of CONVERSATION – its respectful and engaged of communicating and sharing ideas.

Polyck-O’Neill 1 Homage in Blue: General Idea’s Shut the Fuck Up In art of the postmodern era, it can be difficult to discern ironic from sincere intention underlying the use of appropriation, as the viewer has come to expect ironized reiteration in the age of parody and satire. General Idea’s renowned work of video art, Shut the Fuck Up (1985), can seem beguiling to the uninitiated; those who are unfamiliar with the discourse of their continuous dialogic engagement with the art canon and its inherent politics could easily perceive comedy where tragedy prevails, or fail to penetrate the cheerful surface of the group’s carnivalesque and near-schizophrenic multifarious art practice. Hinting at General Idea’s artifice in his essay, “Bound To Please: The Archives from the 1984 Miss General Idea Pavillion [sic]”, AA Bronson analyzes the works comprising Art Metropole, including FILE , the magazine published by the art collective, of which he is the sole surviving member.

Drawing from primary sources and biography, I document the social, political, corporate, and communication networks that illustrators traded in. I focus on two common visual tropes of the day—that of the pretty girl and that of wilderness imagery.

The first edition of PLOT, This World & Nearer Ones, is curated by Mark Beasley. The project is produced in association with Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation, the National Park Service, NYC & Company, and the Office of the Mayor. PLOT09 will draw thousands to Governors Island to explore the artwork and numerous other public programs. PLOT09 is free and open to the public, and will open on June 27. This World & Nearer Ones will intervene in the architectural and natural fabric of the island, transforming its historic buildings and vast lawns—from the iconic Fort Jay to St. Cornelius Chapel—through installation, performance, video, and auditory works, inviting audiences to reconsider the island’s past and future.     MAUREEN PALEY. press release AA BRONSON + GENERAL IDEA 30 September – 11 November 2018 private view: Sunday 30 September 5:30 – 7:30 pm The exhibition marks fifty years since AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal first met in 1968, initiating their collaboration as the Canadian collective General Idea the following year. Over the course of twenty five years (1969-1994), they lived and worked together to produce the living artwork of their being together, undertaking over 100 solo exhibitions, countless group shows and temporary public art projects. They were known for their magazine FILE (1972-1989), their unrelenting production of numerous multiples, and their early involvement in punk, queer theory and AIDS activism. The celebrated publication FILE appropriated the design of LIFE magazine; some of the most radical artists and collectives of the period contributed to FILE, among them Art & Language, writer William Burroughs, and bands such as Talking Heads and The Residents. The adoption of the existing mass-market format of LIFE magazine set up a sustained interest in the possibility of using ‘found formats’ as ‘hosts’ for their ideas. From 1987 through 1994, working primarily in New York City, General Idea’s work addressed the AIDS crisis and produced their best known work to date - Imagevirus. Reappropriating Robert Indiana’s work LOVE - substituting, in the same visual arrangement and colour composition, the letters L-O-V-E with A-I-D-S – they used the mechanism of viral transmission to investigate the term as both word and image. The series took the form of paintings, sculptures, postage stamps, posters and magazine covers.
