Tom Thomson's paintings are frequently reproduced as icons of Canadian nationalism. His best known works, such as "A Northern River," "The Jack Pine," and "The West Wind," have been reproduced in such various forms as postage starnps, coins, coasters and posters. They are by now thoroughly layered over in generations of nationalist gloss. But Thomson himself is a legendary figure in Canadian culture. A mythology of Tom Thomson was produced by members of the nationalist intelligentsia just after his tragic death in 19 17. This idea played upon many existing ideas of Canadian national identity, including the notion of Canada's wild and northern essence. The inter-war period was a particutar fecund moment in Canadian nationalism. This exuberant nationalisrn underlay much of the Thomson mythology. However, this mythology was also informed by sentiments of antimodernisrn. As much as the Thomson mythology presented a figure celebrating the development of Canadian art and the Canadian nation, it expressed a certain anxiety about the various and dynamic conditions of modemity. Antimodemists yearned for the simple life and a more meaningful existence, and many of them thought they saw this in the figure of Tom Thomson. At a time when men's roles and attributes were being redefined, some of the cultural producers represented Thomson as an exemplar of true manhood. Those who created the Thomson legend, then, looked backwards to a supposedly simpler time as much as they welcomed and fostered Canada's commercial, industrial, and political deveIopment. Fundamentally, however, they created an idea of Tom Thomson that supported, rather than challenged, many of the existing hierarchies and structures of Canadian society. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people have contributed to the cornpletion of this project; many more than there is room here to thank. His knowledge, his assurance, his integrity were as important as a medium and a technique. Blodwen ~avies' In NationaI Drearns: Myth, Mernory, and Canadian History, historian Daniel Francis tumed his iconociastic eye, in 1997, to a variety of Canadian mythoIogies. His chapter, 'The Myth of the Canoe,' punctured some of the painters-in-the-wilderness tales of those legendary Canadian artists, the Group of Seven. His debunking of the Group-of-myth was clear, well developed, thorough, and, ultimately, convincingS2Yet revealingly, Tom Thomson escaped Francis's efforts to bring these legends back into reality. A legendary idea of Thomson persisted in his account: His style, with its audacious use of vivid colour and blunt brush strokes, was seen to embody the raw energy of the northem landscape. Al1 the better that he was self-taught and completely ignorant of modern painting. The others considered him the prototype of what the new Canadian artist should be: an untutored genius whose art sprang from an intuitive understanding of the land. The others al1 came from cities, but Thomson was a country boy, raised on a fann near Georgian Bay where he leamed to handle a paddle, a hunting rifle and a fishing rod with equal facility.' Here, the Thomson mythology remained intact after al1 these years. The legend of Thomson had been created 70 and 80 years earlier, shortly after his death in 1917. It is the story of a man who gained intirnate knowledge of the Canadian wilderness. It is the story of a Canadian backwoodsman, who had partaken of the wildemess lifestyle since childhood, who had unparalleIed outdoors ski11 and ability, and who supported himself as a ranger l Blodwen Davies, Tom Thomson: The Story of a Man who Looked for Beauty and for Truth in the Wilderness, [1935] rev. ed. Thomson's thorough understanding of the wild, the myth has it, enabled him to render in paint and board and canvas the raw essence of the Canadian experience in landscape paintings of northem Ontario's Canadian Shield. The Thomson legend tells the story of an untutored, self-taught painter who was ignorant of any formal style, school or technique, especially any which had corne from the European Salons. Unheralded and unsupported in his time, he simply experimented and created techniques to suit his purpose. He led into the Canadian wilderness a collection of artists who would become the Group of Seven. The myth notes that, like many heroes, Thomson was talf, handsome, solitary, quiet, reserved, stoic and virile. The tale ends with a death that remains a mysteiy.* In 1986, Joan Murray described the qualities that [flixe[d] him in the Canadian imagination.     Barker Fairley (1887-1986) Brief biography Artist, writer, scholar, teacher and poet Barker was born in 1887 on Park Road, Barnsley to Barker and Charlotte Fairley. Barker Snr. came from the north east to be master then head of St. John's School Barnsley, a post he held for nearly forty years. Educated at St. Johns, Leeds Central High School, Leeds and Jena Universities, Barker spent his adult life in Canada becoming Professor of German at the University of Toronto and the foremost authority on Goethe of his day. But there was more to Barker than brilliant scholarship. As Canada strove to find its own identity, Barker's other great talents began to flourish. Recognizing the birth of a new country he saw that art would give that country its own identity away from European traditions and he became a supporter, promoter and friend of a group of artists called The Group of Seven. This group, exhibiting as a group for the first time in 1920, portrayed Canada's landscape in stark reality. Barker's articles about the group, particularly in “The Canadian Forum” a magazine he co-founded, and his support at the University helped the group achieve international success. He has been called the ninth member of the Group of Seven. The work of the group was the subject of a major exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2011. Barker married firstly, Margaret Keeling the daughter of the Headmaster of Bradford Grammar School. Margaret was a writer, educator and political activist who was deported from the U.S.A.

The Estate of General Idea (1969-1994) had their first exhibition with the Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery on view in Chelsea through January 13, featuring several “ziggurat” paintings from the late 1960s, alongside works on paper, photographs and ephemera that highlight the central importance of the ziggurat form in the rich practice of General Idea. It got me thinking about the unique Canadian trio’s sumptuous praxis and how it evolved from humble roots in the underground of the early 1970s to its sophisticated position atop the contemporary art world of today. One could say that the ziggurat form is a perfect metaphor for a staircase of their own making that they ascended with grace and elegance, which is true. But they also had to aggressively lacerate and burn their way to the top, armed with real fire, an acerbic wit and a penchant for knowing where to apply pressure. Even the tragic loss of two thirds of their members along the way did not deter their rise, making the unlikely climb all the more heroic.     ANNETTE MANGAARD Film/Video/Installation/Photography Born: Lille Værløse, Denmark. Canadian Citizen Education: MFA, Gold Medal Award, OCAD University 2017 BIO Annette Mangaard is a Danish born Canadian media artist and filmmaker who has recently completed her Masters in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design. Her installation work has been shown around the world including: the Armoury Gallery, Olympic Site in Sydney Australia; Pearson International Airport, Toronto; South-on Sea, Liverpool and Manchester, UK; Universidad Nacional de Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina; and Whitefish Lake, First Nations, Ontario. Mangaard has completed more then 16 films in more than a decade as an independent filmmaker. Her feature length experimental documentary on photographer Suzy Lake and the history of feminism screened as part of the INTRODUCING SUZY LAKE exhibition October 2014 through March 2015 at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Mangaard was nominated for a Gemini for Best Director of a Documentary for her one hour documentary, GENERAL IDEA: ART, AIDS, AND THE FIN DE SIECLE about the celebrated Canadian artists collective which premiered at Hot Doc’s in Toronto then went on to garner accolades around the world. Mangaard’s one hour documentary KINNGAIT: RIDING LIGHT INTO THE WORLD, about the changing face of the Inuit artists of Cape Dorset premiered at the Art Gallery of Ontario and was invited to Australia for a special screening celebrating Canada Day with the Canadian High Commission. Mangaard’s body of work was presented as a retrospective at the Palais de Glace, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009 and at the PAFID, Patagonia, Argentina in 2013. In 1990 Mangaard was invited to present solo screenings of her films at the Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver, Canada and in 1991 at the Kino Arsenal Cinematheque in Berlin, West Germany.

    John Boyle, Greg Curnoe and Joyce Wieland: Erotic Art and English Canadian Nationalism by Matthew Purvis A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Mediations Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Matthew Purvis i Abstract This dissertation concerns the relation between eroticism and nationalism in the work of a set of English Canadian artists in the mid-1960s-70s, namely John Boyle, Greg Curnoe, and Joyce Wieland. It contends that within their bodies of work there are ways of imagining nationalism and eroticism that are often formally or conceptually interrelated, either by strategy or figuration, and at times indistinguishable. This was evident in the content of their work, in the models that they established for interpreting it and present in more and less overt forms in some of the ways of imagining an English Canadian nationalism that surrounded them. The dissertation contextualizes the three artists in the terms of erotic art prevalent in the twentieth century and makes a case for them as part of a uniquely Canadian mode of decadence. Constructing my case largely from the published and unpublished writing of the three subjects and how these played against their reception, I have attempted to elaborate their artistic models and processes, as well as their understandings of eroticism and nationalism, situating them within the discourses on English Canadian nationalism and its potentially morbid prospects. Rather than treating this as a primarily cultural or socio-political issue, it is treated as both an epistemic and formal one.
