Austria has been a pioneer in the field of life sciences for several years. Global players, excellent research facilities and young dynamic start-ups provide excellent conditions for the further development of this important sector. This is perfectly illustrated in the fourth volume of ‘Life Sciences in Austria’. More than seven years ago, BIOCOM and its partner Austria Wirt- schaftsservice GmbH (aws) began the ambitious undertaking of capturing a complete statis- tical picture of the Austrian life sciences, and to create a comprehensive overview of the entire sector. This comprises addresses and contacts of all the relevant stakeholders in science and in- dustry. The data presented in the first pages of this reference book was collected through inten- sive research and on the basis of a survey conducted by BIOCOM AG on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDW) and aws. The directory section of the book gives an up-to-date and detailed snapshot of the life science sector in Austria (1,447 records), and comprises the following chapters: Chapter I: Research, Development and Manufacturing Companies (375 records) – Biotech/Pharma Sector (206) – Medical Device Sector (169) Chapter II: Suppliers in the Life Sciences (235) Chapter III: Service Providers in the Life Sciences (334) Chapter IV: Sales and Distribution Companies in the Life Sciences (380) – Biotech/Pharma Sector (92) – Medical Device Sector (288) Chapter V: Organizations in the Life Sciences (63) Chapter VI: Research and Education Institutions in the Life Sciences (60) BIOCOM AG and aws are proud to present ‘Life Sciences in Austria 2019’, which will enable all stakeholders in biotechnology, pharma and medical devices to better connect with each other. You can find more detailed information at: www.lifescienceaustria.at. With this directory, we hope to provide a significant input for the future development of the Austrian life sciences. 5 Life Science Report Austria – Summary 7 life.science.report.austria.2018 1. Life Science Report Austria 2018 Life Science Sector in Austria The life sciences have a long history in Austria. This tradition forms the basis of a dynamic scene of researchers, clinicians and entrepreneurs. Today, an excellent network of renowned academic institutions, global players, family-owned businesses and innovative start-ups has been established and ties between science and industry have been strengthened to improve the innovation outcome for the society. Thus, all stakeholders in the Austrian life sciences contribute to a highly attractive sector. However, the system is facing numerous challenges. Whether it is the aging of society, di- gitalization, the increasing cost pressures in healthcare systems or climate change – the life sciences are considered to be among the key technologies for providing solutions. Situated in the middle of Europe, Austria has taken advantage of its geographical location to be a fore- runner of innovation. Austria’s life science industry in figures With 917 companies active in biotechnology, pharma or the medical devices business, life sci- ences are an important and constantly growing part of the Austrian economy. 11.4% more businesses were located in Austria in 2017 compared to 2014. In 2017, these companies were responsible for a turnover of 22.4 billion euros. From 2014, revenues increased quite substanti- ally by 17.2%. The life science companies also employ a large chunk of the Austrian workforce. In 2017, more than 55,000 people earned a living working for an Austrian life science company, which means an increase of 7.4% compared to 2014. The life science industry in Austria is fully diversified and essentially consists of two equally important subsegments: biotechnology and pharma on the one hand, and medical devices on the other. Although there are more companies in the medical device sector (554 companies) 2012 2014 2017 Number of companies in the life science industry 723 823 917 Number of employees in the life science industry 50,180 51,660 55,480 Turnover in the life science industry EUR 17.73 bn EUR 19.11 bn EUR 22.4 bn Number of research and education institutions active in life sciences n.a. 55 55 Number of life science employees in research and education institutions n.a. 19,830 21,145 Key figures of the life science sector in Austria 2012, 2014, 2017 8 life.science.report.austria.2018 than in the biotech and pharma sector (363 companies), both employ a similar number of people. As far as turnover is compared, biotechnology and pharma is the stronger field with revenues of 13.97 billion euros in 2017, while the turnover in the medical devices industry was at 8.44 billion euros. In conclusion, the key figures show that the life sciences are an impor- tant pillar of the Austrian economy. Whether it is with respect to research, development and manufacturing or to suppliers, service providers, sales and distribution specialists – the sec- tor has established itself as an outstanding driver of economic growth and innovation and a creator of jobs. Strong foundation in research and teaching The healthy economic development of the life sciences is supported by a dense network of internationally renowned research and teaching expertise. A total of 55 institutions are fully dedicated to life science research or have significant activities in this field. Altogether, more than 21,000 life sciences related employees are working at 17 universities, 13 universities of applied sciences and 25 non-university research institutes, building the innovative foundation of the Austrian life science sector as a whole. Besides high-quality research, the academic institutions also provide the sector with well-trained people, representing a strong pillar in the country’s educational system. In 2017, the total number of life science students at univer- sities and universities of applied science accounted to more than 67,000, and close to 7,750 students graduated.

The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed.

  • Corporate Ghg Inventorying and Target Setting Self-Assessment: V1.0
APPENDIX Corporate GHG Inventorying and Target Setting Self - Assessment : V1.0 Development and Methodology April 2020 APPENDIX: CORPORATE GHG INVENTORYING AND TARGET SETTING SELF-ASSESSMENT: V1.0 Purpose of this Self-Assessment and How it Can Lead to Action Companies are often in a stronger position to improve their greenhouse gas (GHG) management efforts once they understand their relative performance compared to their peers. In response to stakeholder interest, this self-assessment is designed to help companies estimate, at a high level, how their GHG inventorying and target-setting approaches compare to large peer companies representing different industry sectors. Once companies estimate how their key GHG measurement and target-setting efforts compare to their peers, they can evaluate, in greater detail, how other companies approach GHG inventorying and target setting. Helping companies locate their GHG management efforts within the broader market may spur competition, garner internal support for widening the scope of their GHG inventories or setting more aggressive GHG reduction targets, and prioritize resources to implement GHG reduction activities. • Entry-level: For companies beginning to address their GHG emissions, this resource aims to help them identify which inventorying and target-setting actions reflect common business practices today and provide them with a roadmap for developing their own inventories and setting targets. • Intermediate: For companies further along their sustainability journey, this self- assessment can validate more advanced inventorying and target-setting behaviors that position them to deepen GHG emission reductions. • Advanced: For leading companies, this resource can also validate their efforts and encourage them to explore implementing more cutting edge GHG management efforts, eventually pushing such innovations into the mainstream and sharing practices with others.
