I hope books 2 and 3 are just as great! Oh mercy. The first book, An Assembly Such as This , has hardly begun before Darcy is slighting Elizabeth at the Meryton assembly and endearing himself to the community at large with his arrogant behavior. I had assumed that Darcy's "pride" was more in the mind of Elizabeth and stemmed from introverted social anxiety. Iliana rated it liked it Jan 22, To that end, he accepts the invitation of Lord Sayre, an old university friend for a week's stay at Sayre's family estate, Norwycke Castle, hoping to find a suitable wife amongst the party gathered there. One of the most beloved romantic heroes in all of literature, Fitzwilli AJane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice is beloved by millions, but little is revealed in the book about the mysterious and handsome hero, Mr. But, in defense of those, I understand the picture Aidan was drawing of Darcy and how his life was changing because of his love and treatment of Elizabeth. As an ostensible part of the Austenverse or whatever is that even a thing or am I making stuff up now , I only finished reading this out of pig-headedness, and because the third book in the series is supposed to make up for the first two being so very bad. -

Introduction It is a truth universally acknowledged that everybody must read at least one Jane Austen’s novel in their life. And, although Sense and Sensibility and Emma are rather popular, most people read her most famous novel: Pride and Prejudice. Many people and researchers have written about this novel due to its importance and popularity: they have analyzed situations, irony, the language that Austen used and why it was used. And not only researchers know a lot about Pride and Prejudice. We all know Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy’s love story, the sweet love that Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley feel for each other and the elopement of crazy and irresponsible Lydia Bennet with shameless George Wickham. According to this, everybody knows everything about Pride and Prejudice and there is nothing new to say, so what is the aim of doing a new project about something that has already been studied thousands of times? Even though a lot of research has been done, there are still new things to say and there are some characters that have been less studied, although not forgotten. Lydia Bennet is one of those. Most people only know her because of the elopement that nearly destroyed Lizzy and Darcy’s happiness, but they are not really aware of who she really was. -

The conflict created when the will of an individual opposes the will of the majority is the recurring theme of many novels, plays, and essays. Select the work of an essayist who is in opposition to his or her society; or from a work of recognized literary merit, select a fictional character who is in opposition to his or her society. In a critical essay, analyze the conflict and discuss the moral and ethical implications for both the individual and the society. Do not summarize the plot or action of the work you choose. Authors often explore the restrictions of society during their time and the effects they have on their protagonists. Often this requires the characters to go against the rules of society, such as the case of Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Her story is set in the Regency era, a time where appearances—dress, etiquette, relationships, money —meant everything in life, especially for women. Through Elizabeth’s actions, relationships, and interactions with other characters, Austen projects her voice and opinions against such social restrictions. However, she does not argue for the complete breakdown of standard regulations, but rather for a balance between individual and society. Elizabeth exhibits a mental strength that differentiates her from the other women in the story; her revolutionary characteristics are her indirect opposition against society. Despite such opposition, Austen approves of her decisions through her ultimate finding of happiness at the end of the story, implying that her actions are justified against society’s wrongs against women. -

Himes, B.A., East Texas Baptist University; M.A., Baylor University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Mary Ann O’Farrell Comfort—with its various connotations of physical ease, wealth, independence, and service—is an important concept to Jane Austen, who uses comfort in her novels to both affirm and challenge accepted women’s roles and status in her culture. In the late eighteenth century, new ideas of physical comfort emerged out of luxury along with a growing middle class, to become something both English people and foreigners identified with English culture. The perceived ability of the English to comfort well gave them a reason for national pride during a time of great anxieties about France’s cultural and military might, and Austen participates in her culture’s struggle to define itself against France. -

AN ANALYSIS ON THE PLOT OF JANE AUSTENS NOVEL “PRIDE AND PREJUDICE” Arbain Universitas Widya Gama Mahakam, Samarinda Email: [email protected] Abstract: This study reports an analysis of the plot used in the novel written by Jane Austens, Pride and Prejudice. Using qualitative approach that focused on content analysis, this study presents three kinds of findings. Respectively, the findings are: (1) conflict on which the plot turns, (2) chief episodes or incidents that make up the plot, and (3) plot in terms of its exposition, complication, crisis/climax, falling action and denouement. Conflicts in the novel are nicely to read and the development of the conflicts is smooth. Resolution is given in a direct way. Chief episodes that built up the conflict consist of 15 events from which the ending of the conflicts are easily to guess but nicely to follow. Finally, plots that make up the story concise, smooth, and interesting are supported using simple dialogues, conversations, and plausible resolution. Keywords: plot, conflict, resolution, Jane Austens. NOVEL is relatively long fictional prose narrative with a more or less complex plot or pattern or events, about human beings, their feelings, thought, action (Webster's New Words Dictionary (1991:929). A novel is a unity of art, which has an inter-relationship of its elements. -

H. Hutton criticized George Eliot for “unfairly running down one of her own characters”: Middlemarch’s Rosamond Vincy. Hutton blamed Eliot for being cruel to her own creation and used his role as a reader and a critic to lodge a public complaint on Rosamond’s behalf. Indignant Reading identifies this response—dissatisfaction and even anger with an author for his/her perceived mistreatment of a fictional character—as a common occasion for literary criticism in the nineteenth century. The indignant readings found in Victorian reviews, letters, and prefaces advance conceptions of plot, characterization, and fictionality distinct from those offered in modern narratological criticism or historicist accounts of Victorian novel practice or literary criticism.
