The Question of Algorithmic Personhood and Being
Article The Question of Algorithmic Personhood and Being (Or: On the Tenuous Nature of Human Status and Humanity Tests in Virtual Spaces—Why All Souls Are ‘Necessarily’ Equal When Considered as Energy) Tyler Lance Jaynes Alden March Bioethics Institute, Albany Medical College, Albany, NY 12208, USA; [email protected] Abstract: What separates the unique nature of human consciousness and that of an entity that can only perceive the world via strict logic-based structures? Rather than assume that there is some potential way in which logic-only existence is non-feasible, our species would be better served by assuming that such sentient existence is feasible. Under this assumption, artificial intelligence systems (AIS), which are creations that run solely upon logic to process data, even with self-learning architectures, should therefore not face the opposition they have to gaining some legal duties and protections insofar as they are sophisticated enough to display consciousness akin to humans. Should our species enable AIS to gain a digital body to inhabit (if we have not already done so), it is more pressing than ever that solid arguments be made as to how humanity can accept AIS as being cognizant of the same degree as we ourselves claim to be. By accepting the notion that AIS can and will be able to fool our senses into believing in their claim to possessing a will or ego, we may yet Citation: Jaynes, T.L. The Question have a chance to address them as equals before some unforgivable travesty occurs betwixt ourselves of Algorithmic Personhood and Being and these super-computing beings. -

Rey-Lynn Little Graduate Student of Journalism B.A
Outline for SASSI: Signs in International Media: The Image of the Journalist in Anime Rey-Lynn Little Graduate Student of Journalism B.A. Sociology and B. A. Communication Studies, Northeastern State University, 2016 University of Colorado Boulder 16 March 2020 I: Introduction A. What is anime? Well, in short it is animation--a cinematic art form. In Japan, manga and anime are a basic transmission of culture through media spanning the past three generations. Anime is either an original or more often than not adapted from a popular manga, which can be more easily understood as comic books or graphic novels. B. This medium will likely be seen by many viewers of younger generations as audiences become increasingly international and transglobal. Because of this, it feels important to examine the symbolic impact the mediated culture could have on individual and social lives. C. This presentation positions anime as relevant to current personal, historical, cultural, and political perspectives towards discerning the view of the journalist in popular culture, given the growing trend of anime media within the United States. II. Research Question-How can popular culture be used to represent journalists and their subjects, and why does this matter? A. Research on the topic of anime has often been focused on education and teaching methods but is lacking in other areas, such as journalism. B. The ultimate purpose of this research is to explore mediated messages, visual and textual, within anime through a journalistic lens. C. Matthews relates that there exists a gap in the literature concerning contemporary news media coverage of Japan, but there is a “sizeable body of recent work” considering the “representations of Japan through popular culture, including mass media products such as film and television” (2019, p. -
The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise
The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise: a Case Study of Transmedia Storytelling Practices and the Role of Digital Games in Japan Akinori (Aki) Nakamura College of Image Arts and Sciences, Ritsumeikan University 56-1 Toji-in Kitamachi, Kita-ku, Kyoto 603-8577 [email protected] Susana Tosca Department of Arts and Communication, Roskilde University Universitetsvej 1, P.O. Box 260 DK-4000 Roskildess line 1 [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study looks at the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and the role of digital games from the conceptual frameworks of transmedia storytelling and the Japanese media mix. We offer a historical account of the development of “the Mobile Suit Gundam” series from a producer´s perspective and show how a combination of convergent and divergent strategies contributed to the success of the series, with a special focus on games. Our case can show some insight into underdeveloped aspects of the theory of transmedial storytelling and the Japanese media mix. Keywords Transmedia Storytelling, Media mix, Intellectual Property, Business Strategy INTRODUCTION The idea of transmediality is now more relevant than ever in the context of media production. Strong recognizable IPs take for example more and more space in the movie box office, and even the Producers Guild of America ratified a new title “transmedia producer” in 2010 1. This trend is by no means unique to the movie industry, as we also detect similar patterns in other media like television, documentaries, comics, games, publishing, music, journalism or sports, in diverse national and transnational contexts (Freeman & Gambarato, 2018). However, transmedia strategies do not always manage to successfully engage their intended audiences; as the problematic reception of a number of works can demonstrate. -
