Gay Games VII

Chicago 2006 Games VII & Cultural Festival July 15-22, 2006 Soldier VII, 2006 in Field he ability to dream beyond the constraints of reality, the courage to make Tdreams come true. These are among the legacies that Dr. Tom Waddell left to those lucky enough to follow his lead.

The Chicago 2006, Inc. bid organization Chicago Games 2006, Inc. [CGI], is fortunate to carry on these legacies. The three-year effort to create our orig- inal bid document and presentation in embodied those visions—we had participation by more than 400 people; we were inclusive of all parts of the community; and we pursued our personal best in work- ing together and in celebrating all of the best things Chicago has to offer.

We have maintained our commitment to our original vision for a communi- ty-centered Gay Games. We have come to embrace the new vision of the Gay Games—a return to the roots of the movement in the sports and cultural competitions that give rise to the personal experiences that change people’s lives. We have built a plan that acknowledges the past and looks toward the future, and does so with a vigorous attention to financial accountability. Chicago is a world-class sports city with state-of-the-art facilities. Our Sports Committee has secured these facilities while integrating a “Sports Village” concept that incorporates nearly 90% of the athletes into four centralized sites, or “Villages.” The “Sports Villages” are divided geographically into North, South, Lake Front and University Village. Events are structured and scheduled so that more than 1,200 athletes will be competing at each of the established Sports Villages. Each of these Villages reflect the cultural diversity of the Chicagoland area.

As in all great organizations and communities, diversity and inclusion are key com- ponents to achieving organizational excellence. The ethnic and social diversities reflected and encouraged in Chicago’s sports organizations parallel those of the general population in the City of Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods.

Millennium Park, an easily accessible and majestic venue in the Heart of Chicago’s Grant Park and Lakefront, will serve as “Center Stage” for all medal ceremonies. Medal presentations will be held nightly on the Millennium Park stage to truly rec- ognize and honor the personal achievements of the Gay Games VII athletes in an effort to celebrate and share the joy of their hard work with friends, family and the community. This centralized location will enable media to take photos of winners, interview participants, and cover the Gay Games in a comprehensive manner. Athletes who win medals will be acknowledged in a celebration attended by athletes from other sports and cultural participants.
