The rededication of the Fifth Street School as the new home for the Nevada School of the Arts on September 22, 2008 was a long time dream realized for many. The $13.5M restoration project was financed by redevelopment funds from the City of Las Vegas. All citizens can now take pride in this historic Las Vegas landmark that is once again a vital and vibrant educational facility! Some of the recordings from which this programme has been built were unreleased, others made specially for this CD. Most of the works were performed and recorded from photocopies of the manuscripts held in Schnittke’s family archive in Moscow and in Hamburg and at the Alfred Schnittke Archive in Goldsmiths, University of London. Piano Preludes (1953–54) The Piano Preludes were written during Schnittke’s years at the Moscow Conservatory, 1953–54; before then he had studied piano at the Moscow Music College from 1949 to 1953. An advanced player, he most enjoyed Rachmaninov and Scriabin, although he also learned and played some of Chopin’s Etudes as well as Rachmaninov’s Second and the Grieg Piano Concerto. It was at that time that LPs irst became available in the Soviet Union, and so he was able to listen to recordings of Wagner’s operas and Scriabin’s orchestral music. The piano style in the Preludes is sometimes very orchestral, relecting his interest in the music of these composers.

    BIOGRAPHIES OF COMPOSERS & PRESENTERS Admiral, Roger Canadian pianist Roger Admiral performs solo and chamber music repertoire spanning the 18th through the 21st century. Known for his dedication to contemporary music, Roger has commissioned and premiered many new compositions. He works regularly with UltraViolet (New Music Edmonton) and Aventa Ensemble (Victoria), and performs as part of Kovalis Duo with Montreal percussionist Philip Hornsey. Roger also coaches contemporary chamber music at the University of Alberta. Recent performances include Gyorgy Ligeti’s Piano Concerto with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the complete piano works of Iannis Xenakis for Vancouver New Music, a recital with baritone Nathan Berg at Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series (New York City), and recitals for Curto-Circuito de Música Contemporânea Brazil with saxophonist Allison Balcetis, as well as solo recitals in Bratislava, Budapest, and Wroclaw. Roger can be heard on CD recordings of piano music by Howard Bashaw (Centrediscs) and Mark Hannesson (Wandelweiser Editions). Alexander, Justin Justin Alexander is an Assistant Professor of Music at Virginia Commonwealth University where he teaches Applied Percussion Lessons, Percussion Methods and Techniques, Introduction to World Musical Styles, Music and Dance Forms, and directs the VCU Percussion Ensemble. Justin is a founding member of Novus Percutere, with percussionist Dr. Luis Rivera, and The AarK Duo, with flutist Dr. Tabatha Easley. Recent highlights include collaborative performances in Sweden, Australia, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and at the 6th International Conference on Music and Minimalism in Knoxville, Tennessee.     Cornerstones of the Ukrainian violin repertoire 1870 – present day Carissa Klopoushak Schulich School of Music McGill University Montreal, Quebec January 2013 A doctoral paper submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Music in Performance Studies © Carissa Klopoushak 2013 i Abstract: The unique violin repertoire by Ukrainian composers is largely unknown to the rest of the world. Despite cultural and political oppression, Ukraine experienced periods of artistic flurry, notably in the 1920s and the post-Khrushchev “Thaw” of the 1960s. During these exciting and experimental times, a greater number of substantial works for violin began to appear. The purpose of the paper is one of recovery, showcasing the cornerstone works of the Ukrainian violin repertoire. An exhaustive history of this repertoire does not yet exist in any language; this is the first resource in English on the topic. This paper aims to fill a void in current scholarship by recovering this substantial but neglected body of works for the violin, through detailed discussion and analysis of selected foundational works of the Ukrainian violin repertoire. Focusing on Maxym Berezovs´kyj, Mykola Lysenko, Borys Lyatoshyns´kyj, Valentyn Sil´vestrov, and Myroslav Skoryk, I will discuss each composer's life, oeuvre at large, and influences, followed by an in-depth discussion of his specific cornerstone work or works. I will also include cultural, musicological, and political context when applicable. Each chapter will conclude with a discussion of the reception history of the work or works in question and the influence of the composer on the development of violin writing in Ukraine.
