Abstract In total, 58 species of waterbird were recorded on the grassed floodplain of the Middle Fly during surveys in December 1994 and April 1995. The floodplain is an important dry-season habitat both in New Guinea and internationally, with an estimated (k s.e.) 587249 f 62741 waterbirds in December. Numbers decreased 10-fold between December and April to 54914 f 9790: the area was less important during the wet season when it was more deeply inundated. Only magpie geese, comb-crested jacanas and spotted whistling-ducks were recorded breeding on the floodplain. The waterbird community was numerically dominated by fish-eating species, especially in December. Substantial proportions of the populations of many species that occurred on the Middle Fly in December were probably dry-season migrants from Australia, suggesting that migration across Torres Strait is important to the maintenance of waterbird numbers in both New Guinea and Australia. Notes on the Gulf Province Languages Overview
Notes on the Gulf Province languages Karl Franklin (Data Collected 1968-1973; this report collated 2011) Information compiled here is from notes that I collected between 1968 and 1973. Following the completion of my Ph.D. degree at the Australian National University in 1969, I was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship in 1970 to conduct a linguistic survey of the Gulf Province. In preparation for the survey I wrote a paper that was published as: Franklin, Karl J. 1968. Languages of the Gulf District: A Preview. Pacific Linguistics, Series A, 16.19-44. As a result of the linguistic survey in1970, I edited a book with ten chapters, written by eight different scholars (Franklin, Lloyd, MacDonald, Shaw, Wurm, Brown, Voorhoeve and Dutton). From this data I proposed a classification scheme for 33 languages. For specific details see: Franklin, Karl J. 1973 (ed.) The first is a table that briefly outlines information on languages, dialects and villages of the Gulf Province. (Note that I cannot verify the spelling of each village/language due to differences between various sources.) The second section of the paper is an annotated bibliography and the third is an Appendix with notes from Annual Reports of the Territory of Papua. GEORGE2 INTRODUCTION Surprisingly few published data are available on the distribution of the species of echidnas in New Guinea. Field collecting and observations by seven Archbold Expeditions to New Guinea and one to the Cape York Peninsula of Australia have produced additional information on the habitats, distribution, and life histories of the two genera of echidnas, Tachyglossus and Zaglossus. George has had the opportunity of making observations on living Tachyglossus; Van Deusen on Zaglossus. George has also contributed to our understanding of the distribution of Tachyglossus in the Western Highlands District of the Territory of New Guinea. The taxonomy of Zaglossus, first described in 1876, has suffered not only because of the rarity of the genus in collections, but also because the available specimens are widely scattered among the museums of the world. No taxonomist has been able to examine more than a fraction of this material. These artefacts were found some 900 km by sea southwest of their geo- logical source location. They extend the known western limit for incoming obsidian along the south coast of mainland PNG by 155 km. Here we discuss the chemical signatures of these artefacts towards an interpretation of social relations between peoples living on the south coast of PNG after c. -

Lawrence Kuna Kalinoe 11 Abstract Majority of the indigenous people in Papua New Guinea (about 87 per cent) live on their customary land by engaging in fishing, hunting, gathering and subsistence agriculture for their daily sustenance. Water is obtained directly from rivers, lakes, and other watercourses. At present, Papua New Guinea is undergoing rapid economic growth in forestry, agroforestry, mining, and petroleum development activities. Most (if not all) of these natural resources development activities are conducted on customary land and in and around the environment in which the majority of the indigenous peoples live and on which they rely for their subsistence way of life. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT A year after Yonkl Reservoir (Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea) had been completed, a su1wy was conducted among people found fishing at the shore. Rod and line was used in 99% of the reported fishing trips. On an average 0.42 kg offish was caught per person per trip. The average catch per hookhour was 0. 033 kg of the past fishing trips, and 0. 021 kg ofthe on-going fishing trips. The first half ofthe year during which interviews were conducted the catch was composed only of Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis mossambicus. In mid-1992 Tilapia rendalli appeared in the catch, and six months later this species was responsible for 48% of the weight of the dally catch. WMO- UNDP, P.O.Box 1041, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea ABSTRACT Erosion and sediment transport studies have largely been neglected in the past. Only studies connected to specific developments, mainly mining and hydropower, have been carried out. Some of these studies show very high intensities of erosion, indicating that certain areas of Papua New Guinea are among the most geomorphologically dynamic ares on the earth (Star Mountains with Ok Tedi Coppermine). A recent WMO/UNDP project has been addressing the lack of data, and a sediment sampling programme is at present being worked out. Lack of funds is a severe obstacle in the implementation, however. PAPUA NEW GUINEA - PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY PNG (Fig.l) is a highly mountainous country, with approximately half the land area above 1000 m, and the highest point at 4500 m.a.s.l. The Central Range, which stretches from Milne Bay to the border of Irian Jaya, has only two passes lower than 1500 m. In places the mountains broaden into a series of parallel ridges with high, flat, intermontane valleys at approximately 2000 m altitude.
