DUAL FOUR-HIT EFFORTS--Paulo Orlando and Lorenzo Cain combined for half of Kansas City’s 16 hits on Sunday, each contributing four in the victory...yesterday was the second career four-hit contest for Orlando, as the Brazilian Blur also had four hits on June 18 in a 16-5 Kansas City victory at home over these Tigers...for Cain it was his 11th career four-hit game, second this year, with the other also occurring in Target Field on May 24, in a 7-4 KC win. WAY MORE THAN FOUR DOES THE TRICK--Yesterday’s 11-run outburst rank Kansas City’s record to 44-14 when scoring at least four runs in a game...runs have been scarce of late for KC with yesterday the fifth double-digit run explosion of the year, but first since June 18...when the Royals fail to reach the four-run threshold, they are 13-46...the club has gone 15-6 in road games where they score four or more and 6-33 with three or less away from ‘The K’...meanwhile at home, the Royals are 7-13 when plating three or fewer, but 29-8 when at least four score. ERRORLESS STREAK SNAPPED--Eric Hosmer was charged with a fourth inning error on Sunday, effectively snapping Kansas City’s errorless streak at six consecutive games...the skein matched KC’s longest streak of the season (April 27-May 3). BASE THIEVES BEWARE--Catcher Salvador Perez continues to hold the Major League lead in caught stealing pct. with a 52.5 mark...he’s caught 25 potential thieves, which are the second-most in the bigs, behind only Jonathan Lucroy’s 30 and represent a career high for the three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner...between Perez and Drew Butera, Kansas City has the top caught stealing percentage (49.3%) as a club, nabbing 34 would-be thieves for second-most in the A.L...Kansas City’s defensive reputation behind the plate has limited the opposition to stealing only 35 bases on the year, the fewest allowed by any team in the Majors. CLOSING IN ON 1K--The winningest skipper in franchise history, Ned Yost is now 525-529 as the Kansas City manager...his 982 career victories rank seventh among active managers and 65th all-time, just four behind Phil Garner (985)...Ned was named to the role on May 13, 2010 and surpassed Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost’s postseason managerial mark of 22-9 is good for a .710 winning pct., which ranks eighth all-time and is atop the list of managers with at least 20 postseason tilts under their belt...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is now 58th all-time in games managed (2,013)...this is Ned’s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002). THE DEFENDING CHAMPS--Kansas City opened the 2016 season as the two-time defending American League Champions, a franchise first, defeating the Mets to win the World Series crown last year after going to a Game #7 in the 2014 Fall Classic before succumbing to the San Francisco Giants...Kansas City’s A.L. title in 2015 was the fourth in franchise history, joining the 1980, ‘85 and 2014...the Royals are coming off a 95-67 regular season and their first American League Central championship, winning the division by 12 games...the last division title won by Kansas City was the 1985 A.L. West, when the club parlayed that triumph into its first World Series title...the 95 wins last year were the most by a KC squad since the 1980 Royals went 97-65...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City has a 327-276 record for a .542 winning pct., the second best mark in the American League, and one win behind Baltimore (328) for most victories in the American League in that span, while trailing four National League clubs (St. Louis, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Washington). vs. Tigers (2016) vs. Tigers (career) On Road (career) Norris (career) Verlander (career)
