2017 KANSAS CITY ROYALS Spring Training Game Notes Team Venezuela (0-0) @ Kansas City Royals (7-5) Wednesday, March 8, 2017 ACE 30 ROYALS LOSE LONGBALL BATTLE--Billy Burns and Mike Moustakas each hit solo shots, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Kansas City from dropping its second-straight, 7-3 to Cincinnati yesterday in Goodyear...despite trailing from the fifth inning on, the Royals brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after two hits and a walk loaded the bases...however, pinch-hitter Samir Dueñez grounded into a game-ending double play...KC broke out on top early as Moose hit his first roundtripper of the spring in the first inning, while Burns’ blast – his first since September 25, 2015 – tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth... Chris Young suffered his first defeat, despite fanning five in 3.0 innings of work...newly acquired Travis Wood made his first start as a Royal, allowing two runs on four hits over 2.2 frames. Upcoming Probables INTERNATIONAL PLAY--The Royals play host to Team Venezuela this afternoon in an exhibition tune-up prior to the World Baseball Classic...Venezuela arrived in Surprise Today vs. Team Venezuela @ Surprise Stadium (1:05) yesterday and will also take on the Texas Rangers tomorrow, before heading to Jalisco, Yusmeiro Petit Mexico for their first games of the WBC on Friday...the Venezuelan roster is made up of 28 vs. active players, with 22 of them spending time in the big leagues in 2016, including Royals Ian Kennedy, Mike Minor (L), Yender Cáramo, Kevin McCarthy, stars Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar, who will be competing against their Kansas Malcom Culver, Eric Stout (L), Bobby Parnell City teammates today. Jason Hammel, Kelvin Herrera, Matt Strahm (L), ROSTER BREAKDOWN--Following today’s round of cuts, the Royals have 55 players in Scott Alexander (L), Miguel Almonte, Yender Caramo, big league camp...the breakdown includes 27 pitchers (10 non-roster), 6 catchers (3 non- Andrew Edwards, Jonathan Sánchez (L), Malcom Culver, Jake Junis roster), 13 infielders (3 non-roster) and 10 outfielders...among the 27 pitchers in camp, Saturday at Cleveland Indians @ Goodyear Ballpark (1:05) seven are left-handed...southpaw Brian Flynn is listed among the 55 players on the roster, Jason Vargas (L), Kevin McCarthy, Eric Stout (L), Al Alburquerque, but will open the year on the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from a low back injury Yender Cáramo, Bobby Parnell, Chris Withrow, Brandon League incurred just prior to spring training...of the 16 non-roster players in camp with Kansas vs. City, nine have previous Major League experience, including six who had time in “The Danny Salazar, Carlos Frias, Dan Otero Show” in 2016. TWO MORE JOIN THE PARTY--Mike Moustakas and Billy Burns became the 12th and 13th different Royals to go deep this spring, with both players hitting solo shots yesterday in Goodyear...as a group, Kansas City’s 16 roundtrippers are second in the Cactus League, trailing only Colorado’s Major League-leading 19 home runs...Peter O’Brien is tied with 11 other players for the Major League lead, hitting three home runs in his first four spring contests. A WORLD BASEBALL SPRING--The Royals and the rest of Major League Baseball opened training camp early this year due to this being a WBC season... players from 16 different countries will compete in the tournament, which is underway...team USA, who will have Royals’ Eric Hosmer and Danny Duffy has been assigned the Miami pool, which also features the defending champion Dominican Republic, Canada and Colombia...the Colombian squad will have Royals’ minor league catcher Meibrys Viloria and infielder Mauricio Ramos...also participating in this year’s WBC are: Drew Butera (Italy), Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar (Venezuela), Joakim Soria (Mexico) and minor leaguers Gabe Kramer and Jake Kalish (Israel), Allan De San Miguel (Australia)... recently re-signed pitcher Peter Moylan is also slated to appear for Australia. .500 IN ‘16 FOR THE DEFENDING CHAMPS--After consecutive American League crowns, capped by a World Series title in 2015, the Royals recorded an 81-81 ledger last season, finishing third in the American League Central...Kansas City has gone 351-297 in its last four seasons, tying the Baltimore Orioles for the second best record in the American League in that span, just one-half game behind Cleveland (351-297)...this four-year stretch marks the first time the Royals have finished at .500 or better in four consecutive campaigns since going six straight from 1975-80...last year’s club navigated through the first three months with a 42-36 ledger, but scuffled to a 7-19 month of July...the Royals recovered with a 20-9 August, but then slipped and finished the campaign with a 12-17 record over September and October. SPRING WORK--Kansas City has gone 7-5 through the first 12 games of exhibition play...despite back-to-back losses, the Royals are still tied for the most wins in the Cactus League with Colorado, the Angels and Seattle...the Royals were 14-21 in 2016, but 10-5 in Surprise, closing with eight consecutive home wins...the club drew a Surprise home record 126,108 last year for a per game average of 8,407....KC has an all-time exhibition record of 672-615 with 38 ties for a .522 winning pct...the club has posted a 240-192 mark with 18 ties for a .553 mark in the Valley of the Sun...the Royals spent their first 34 seasons training in Florida, beginning with Fort Myers (1969-87), followed by a 15-year stint in Baseball City (1988-2002). THE SEASON AHEAD--The 2017 campaign will begin on Monday, April 3 in Target Field, as the Royals and Twins face-off in the first of a three-game series...all three games in Minneapolis will be day affairs, with an off day on Tuesday, April 4, sandwiched between games one and two...Kansas City will then head to Houston for a three-game weekend set before the home half of the schedule opens on Monday, April 10 against the Oakland A’s...KC will host the Athletics for a three-game set, also separated by an off day on April 11, then visits from the Los Angeles Angels (3) and San Francisco Giants (2) will wrap-up the initial stay of the season...Kansas City will have a stretch from April 28-May 18 when it will play 16 of 20 games in Kauffman Stadium, separated only by a four-game journey to Tampa Bay on May 8-11...as evidenced by the two-game visit from the Giants during the opening homestand, the Royals will battle the N.L. West in Interleague play in 2017, also making trips to San Francisco (2), Dodger Stadium (3) and San Diego (3), while the Giants, Rockies (3) and Diamondbacks (3) pay a visit to “The K”, with the D’Backs series wrapping up the regular season on September 29-October 1.
