  • Minor League Baseball Tampa Tarpons Step up to the Plate with Mentorship for Unrepresented Children in Court System
Minor League Baseball Tampa Tarpons Step Up to the Plate with Mentorship for Unrepresented Children in Court System TAMPA, Fla., (August 28, 2018) What started as a simple request from a judge to find a sports mentor for a child in the Hillsborough County dependency court has evolved into a mentorship program that pairs children with Major League Baseball prospects playing for the Tampa Tarpons. The Tampa Tarpons Professional Baseball Club is a member of the Florida State League (FSL) and the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the New York Yankees Major League Baseball team. The Tarpons play their home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field from April to September. Donna Ackerson is a Child Advocate Manager for the Hillsborough County Guardian ad Litem Foundation (GAL). After a hearing for two brothers in the 13th Judicial Court System required her to find a sports mentor, Ackerson and her intern Katerina Fleming, reached out to all the sports teams in the area. She heard back from one organization, the Tampa Tarpons. “This started as a grassroots effort because I wanted to help two children under my advocacy. I never expected the feedback to be so positive,” says Ackerson. Currently in its second year, the program has matched 12 children with Tampa Tarpons’ players who provide one-on-one interactions with the youths. The kids get to attend and sit near players during home games; they get to spend time with players during or after practices; and this year the organization took the initiative to tutor a child who was having difficulties learning English.

Lawrence Peter Berra was born on May 12, 1925. He played Major League Baseball for 19 years for the New York Yankees. He played on 10 World Series Championship teams, is a MLB Hall of Famer and has some awe-inspiring stats. His name is consistently brought up as one of the best catchers in baseball history, and he was voted to the Team of the Century in 1999. Amazing accomplishments aside, they probably aren't how you know Lawrence. You know him as Yogi, a nickname given to him by a friend who likened his cross-legged sitting to a yogi. Yogi is famous for his fractured English, and sometimes nonsensical quotes, but there seems to be no end to his fan's love for him. Here are 25 Yogi Berra quotes that will make you shake your head and smile. 1. "It's like deja vu all over again." 2. "We made too many wrong mistakes." 3. "You can observe a lot just by watching." 4. "A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." 5. "He hits from both sides of the plate. He's amphibious." 6. "If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be." 7. Corporate Social Responsibility in Professional Sports: An Analysis of the NBA, NFL, and MLB Richard A. McGowan, S.J. John F. Mahon Boston College University of Maine Chestnut Hill, MA, USA Orono, Maine, USA [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an area of organizational study with the potential to dramatically change lives and improve communities across the globe. CSR is a topic with extensive research in regards to traditional corporations; yet, little has been conducted in relation to the professional sports industry. Although most researchers and professionals have accepted CSR has a necessary component in evaluating a firm‟s performance, there is a great deal of variation in how it should be applied and by whom. Professional sports franchises are particularly interesting, because unlike most corporations, their financial success depends almost entirely on community support for the team. This paper employs a mixed-methods approach for examining CSR through the lens of the professional sports industry. The study explores how three professional sports leagues, the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football Association (NFL), and Major League Baseball (MLB), engage in CSR activities and evaluates the factors that influence their involvement. Quantitative statistical analysis will include and qualitative interviews, polls, and surveys are the basis for the conclusions drawn. Some of the hypotheses that will be tested include: Main Research Question/Focus: How do sports franchises
