 FIRE STARTERS: Philadelphia’s starting pitchers shaved almost a full run off their collective ERA from last year (5.23 in 2015, 4.41 in 2016) and posted the 11th-best WAR (12.7) among all starting staffs in the majors (source: FanGraphs) … Right-handers (3.65) and Jerermy Hellickson (3.71) ranked 15th and 16th, respectively, in ERA among all qualifying National League starters … In the month of April, Phillies starters posted a 3.55 ERA (54 ER, 137.0 IP), 4th-best in the NL and 8th in MLB … Then, from September 3-22, Philadelphia’s starters allowed three earned runs or fewer in 19 consecutive games, their longest streak since September 12-30, 1986 (also 19 G) … During the streak, they combined to post a 2.50 ERA (32 ER, 115.1 IP), best among all Major League clubs.

 GLOVE, ACTUALLY: Philadelphia posted the 6th-best in the National League in 2016 (.984), committing just 97 errors in 5,911 total chances … led all NL with a .987 fielding percentage (8 E, 625 TC), marking the first time he has done so in his career and the 5th time the Phillies have led the NL at that position over the last nine years (; 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014) … Starter posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 36 total chances, while OF Peter Bourjos finished with the 6th-best mark among all qualifying NL (.995, 1 E, 188 TC).

 I DOG DARE YOU: On August 7 at SD, the Phillies turned the 32nd in franchise history and first since August 23, 2009 at NYM (Eric Bruntlett unassisted TP) … In the bottom of the 7th , fielded a ground ball to third by Jabari Blash, stepped on the bag, tossed over to Cesar Hernandez, who touched his base and threw a laser to first baseman Tommy Joseph to complete the feat … It was the first 5-4-3 triple play for Philadelphia since April 21, 2007 at CIN (3B Abraham Nunez to 2B to 1B Wes Helms).

 NO OFFENSE, BUT: Philadelphia finished last in the majors in runs scored in 2016, plating only 610 runs in their 162 games (3.77 RPG), 39 fewer than the next closest team (ATL, 649 R) … They also ranked last in extra-base hits (427), total bases (2,089) & OPS (.685) and 29th in average (.240), OBP (.301) & SLG % (.384) … Additionally, the Phillies struck out 1,376 times, 4th-most in the NL and 7th in MLB.

 HOME SICK: The Phillies went 37-44 (.457) at for the second consecutive year, marking their fourth losing season at home in the last five years (also: 2012, 2014, 2015) ... They scored only 279 runs at CBP, their fewest at home in a full season since 1972 when they scored 246 runs in 79 games at … Their 3.44 runs per game average at home in 2016 was the lowest among all Major League teams.

 VINCENT VAN WHOA: In just his second start in a Phillies uniform, painted an absolute masterpiece, dominating the Padres on April 14th in a complete-game, three-hit with no walks and 16 … Numerous club and league records fell with the commanding performance, including the following highlights:

 Velasquez became the 4th Major League since 1893 (the season in which the mound distance was established at 60'6") to throw a complete-game shutout with 16 or more strikeouts, no walks and three hits or fewer … The others: on May 6, 1998 vs HOU (20 SO, 1 H), Roger Clemens on August 25, 1998 vs KC (18 SO, 3 H) and on October 3, 2015 at NYM (17 SO, no-hitter).  Was just the 3rd pitcher in ML history aged 23 or younger to throw CG SHO with no walks and 16 or more strikeouts, joining Dwight “Doc” Gooden (9/12/84 vs PIT) and Kerry Wood (5/6/98 vs HOU).  His 16 SO were tied for 3rd-most in a single game in Phillies history with (6/9/82 vs CHI), (9/1/97 vs NYY) and (5/6/11 vs ATL) … Only (18, 10/2/65 at NYM, 15 inn) and (17, 4/23/61 vs CHI) had more.  He recorded 20 swinging strikes on his , tied for the most in a single game in the PITCHf/x era (installed in ballparks in 2006) … Others: Max Scherzer (10/3/15 at NYM), (4/3/13 vs SD) and (7/7/10 vs BOS).

 FRED SAVAGE: Freddy Galvis had a career year in 2016, becoming only the second in Phillies history with at least 20 doubles and 20 home runs in a single season (other: Jimmy Rollins, 4x) … He led all NL shortstops in starts (153) & fielding percentage (.987) and established career highs in games (158), doubles (26), HR (20), extra-base hits (49), total bases (233), RBI (67) and stolen bases (17) … From August 9th through the end of the year, Galvis had the highest (.518) among all Major League shortstops (min. 150 AB) … He posted two lengthy errorless streaks as well during the season (51 G, 7/22-9/17 & 44 G, 4/9-5/28).

 BULL DURHAM: Phillies followed up his stellar rookie campaign with a very impressive sophomore season … He earned his first National League All-Star selection and saw his walk total more than from 28 in 2015 to 63 in 2016 (+35), his OPS rise from .762 to .781 (+.019), and his total surge from eight to 15 (+7) … In 2016, Herrera joined (1993) and (1999- 2002 & 2004-05) as the only Phillies over the last 25 years to post a .360 on-base percentage or higher and collect 20 or more doubles, 15 or more home runs and 25 or more stolen bases in a single season … Additionally, according to Baseball Reference, Herrera’s 8.0 WAR over his first two seasons (306 G) ranks 64th among all Major League position players since 1901 … Herrera’s 8.0 WAR is the 2nd-highest ever by a Phillies player through their first two years, trailing only (8.8 WAR in 172 G from 1963-64).

 HAIL CESAR!: Second baseman Cesar Hernandez reached base safely in 35 of his final 36 games of the season (8/24-10/2), batting .293 (39- 133) with a .417 OBP (27 BB) over that stretch … He had the 6th-best on-base percentage among all Major League players in the second half of the season (.413), trailing only Joey Votto (.490), (.461), D.J. LeMahieu (.437), Freddie Freeman (.433) and (.423) … He finished the first half with a .329 OBP, which ranked 98th in MLB … Hernandez also set career highs in games (155), at-bats (.547), AVG (.294), OBP, SLG (.393), OPS (.764), hits (161), triples (11), home runs (6), RBI (39) & runs (67).

 HE WENT TO JERAD: Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (33 GS, 11-14, 3.65 ERA) became just the fourth Phillies pitcher over the last 20 years (since 1996) to make at least 33 starts in a season with an ERA of 3.65 or lower, joining (3x, 2008, 2010, 2013), (2010) and Curt Schilling (1997, 1998) … Eickhoff also finished the season with the 4th-lowest BB/9.0 IP ratio in among all National League starters (1.92), behind Bartolo Colon (1.50), Mike Leake (1.53) and (1.84) … He has the 2nd-lowest WHIP (1.14) of any Phillies starter over his first two seasons in the modern era (min. 150.0 IP), behind only George McQuillan (0.96 from 1907-08).

 HEC YEAH!: Right-hander Hector Neris collected a career-high 102 strikeouts, 2nd-most by a Phillies reliever in franchise history (1st: Dick Selma, 153 SO in 1970) and tied for 7th-most among all Major League relievers in 2016 … Neris posted a 2.0 WAR for the year, the highest by a Phillies reliever since (2.8) and (2.0) in 2014 (source: Baseball Reference).

 A TOAST TO TEXAS: From September 8th through the end of the season, the Phillies had all three pitching prospects from the Cole Hamels trade with the in their rotation together for the first time -- , Jerad Eickhoff and Jake Thompson … Eickhoff led the group of youngsters with a 3.65 ERA in 33 starts … Thompson struggled at the outset, but allowed 3 ER or fewer in each of his final six starts of the season (3.41 ERA, 13 ER, 34.1 IP) … Asher, armed with his new two-seam fastball, went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA (7 ER, 27.2 IP) in five starts for Philadelphia.

 MR. 2,000: On August 6th, right-hander Jake Thompson made his Major League debut in a start at San Diego and became the 2,000th player to appear in a game for the Phillies in franchise history … Who was the first Phillie, you ask? … Well, the first-ever Phillies game was played at home in Philadelphia in 1883, and 20-year-old starter John Coleman threw the very first pitch against the Providence Grays … William (Blondie) Purcell got the Phillies first hit and scored the first run (he singled in the 1st inning and scored on a ground out).

 A GOOD CROP ON THE FARM: The 2016 season was a very successful one for the Phillies player development system … Every one of the Phillies domestic minor league affiliates finished above .500 for the first time since 1953 (9 teams over .500 in 1953) … Considering only domestic minor league teams, the Phillies combined .595 minor league winning percentage (412-280) ranked first among all organizations … Including foreign teams, their .581 winning percentage (482-348) ranked second in baseball only to Seattle (.590, 451-314) … Philadelphia had four minor league affiliates qualify for the playoffs, the most in one year since MiLB’s records began tracking all teams’ postseason appearances in 2005 … The Phillies six domestic minor league teams combined to post a 3.34 ERA and a .262 team batting average in the regular season … Every team had an ERA of 3.85 or lower, and four of the six hit better than .260 … Additionally, they had six Phillies minor leaguers with 20 or more home runs in a season for the first time since 1983 (seven players) … Reading OF (40 HR) and 1B (38 HR) were the top two home run hitters in all of .

 2016 NL Relief Rankings: 4th in games finished (59) … 5th in saves (37) … 10th in SV % (86.0%)  Converted 24 of 26 save opportunities and posted a 2.59 ERA (12 ER, 41.2 IP) in 39 appearances before the ASB … Was 13 of 17 in SVO and posted an 8.33 ERA (25 ER, 27.0 IP) in 31 games after the break  His 37 saves in 2016 rank 9th on the all-time Phillies saves list  Became just the 7th pitcher in Phillies history to collect 35 or more saves in a single season … Others: Mesa (45 & 42 SV’s), Williams (43), Lidge (41), Bedrosian (40), Papelbon (39 & 38) and Wagner (38)  His 24 SV before the ASB tied Steve Bedrosian in 1987 and Jose Mesa in 2001 for the club record  Struck out the side on 8/13 vs COL, the first Phillies pitcher to do so in a save situation since Ken Giles on 8/9/15 at SD  Missed 2 games (8/3-4) while on the paternity list for the birth of his first child, Matthew (was born in Philadelphia on 8/4)
