Biography: Samuel Hazo Biography: Samuel Hazo Spanning six decades and circling the globe, author Samuel John Hazo’s oeuvre includes poetry, fiction, drama, essays, and various works of translation. He has published more than 50 books that have been translated into numerous languages, and his literary distinctions include The Griffin Award for Creative Writing from the University of Notre Dame and the Maurice English Award for Poetry. His collection of poems Once for the Last Bandit became a National Book Award finalist. A life-long resident of Pittsburgh, Hazo graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame before earning graduate degrees from Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. He is the McAnulty Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus at Duquesne University, where he taught for 43 years, and he served as the inaugural Poet-In- Residence at La Roche College. Named as Pennsylvania’s Poet Laureate by Governor Robert Casey in 1993, Hazo served in this esteemed position for ten years, receiving the Hazlett Award for Excellence in Literature from the Governor. Twice recognized as Pittsburgh’s Man of the Year in Arts, he has also been awarded twelve honorary degrees, an honorary membership in Phi Beta Kappa, and the Forbes Medal for Outstanding Cultural Contributions to Western Pennsylvania. As founder and director of the International Poetry Forum from 1966 until 2009, Dr. Hazo hosted over 800 distinguished poets and performers from around the world, establishing Pittsburgh as a cultural and artistic nerve center. Notable guests included Seamus Heaney, Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, W.S. Merwin, Galway Kinnell, A.R. Ammons, Richard Wilbur, Maxine Kumin, Octavio Paz, Derek Walcott, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Gregory Peck, Princess Grace of Monaco, Anthony Hopkins, Eva Marie Saint, and James Earl Jones. Hazo’s work scrutinizes themes of family and faith, mortality and love, and the passage of time with what poet Naomi Shihab Nye describes as “immense intelligence, lyricism, and humanity.” .

In the Writers Chronicle of December 2010 I described myself as largely self-educated. In an era before creative writing classes became a staple of the college curriculum, I was "piecemeal poetry literate"—in love with Gerard Manley Hopkins and A. E. Housman, an omnivorous reader across the centuries of John Donne and George Herbert, Randall Jarrell and T. S. Eliot. I wrote at least a hundred lugubrious romantic poems. One, I remember, began When lonely on an August night I lie Wide-eyed beneath the mysteries of space And watch unnumbered pricks of dew-starred sky Drop past the earth with quiet grace ... Deep down I longed to be one of the tribe but I had no sense of how to go about gaining entry. I had already achieved fame in the narrow confines of my family for little ditties celebrating birthdays and other occasions, but I did not find this satisfying. There were no MFAs in poetry that I knew of except for the famous Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936; certainly there was nothing accessible to a mother of two, pregnant with her third child in 1953 in Newton, Massachusetts. I have noted elsewhere that I chafed against the domesticity in which I found myself. I had a good marriage and our two little girls were joyous elements in it. But my discontent was palpable; I did not yet know that a quiet revolution in thinking was taking place.

    Lucille Clifton Winner of Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize Posted by TBN On 05/10/2007 Lucille Clifton is the winner of the 2007 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize May 9, Lucille Clifton, poet and distinguished professor of humanities at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) has been awarded the 2007 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. The prize includes a $100,000 stipend, which will be given at a ceremony May 23 in Chicago. The Lilly Prize is given by the Poetry Foundation, publishers of Poetry Magazine. Clifton is the first African American woman to win this award since it was first given in 1986. Clifton holds the Hilda Combs Landers Endowed Chair in the Liberal Arts at St. Mary’s and served as Poet Laureate of the State of Maryland from 1975 to 1985. Her poems portray the complexities and struggles as well as the celebrations and courage of her life. Her poems are about the life of all human beings and bring clarity and illumination to that shared experience. “Lucille’s poetry can be found all over campus,” said Maggie O’Brien, president of SMCM. “Her words are on the walls of the campus center, in our bookstore, and in the hearts and minds of our stu-dents, faculty and staff.” Clifton’s poetry is even woven into the landscape on the four-year liberal arts campus. Seven poems that Clifton wrote about the attacks of September 11, 2001, are on stone plaques around St. John’s Pond. They provide a means of reflection on the nature of hate, love and compassion.

    Biography - Edward Albee Albee was born on March 12, 1928, in Washington, D. C., and adopted at the age of two weeks by Reed and Frances Albee, who named him Edward after Reed’s father. This elder Edward held a substantial business interest in a chain of vaudeville theatres, and the family was very wealthy. Young Edward’s early years were spent among servants, nurses, tutors, as the family alternated between stays in the mansion in Larchmont, New York, and extended winter holidays in Florida. He had, it seems, few friends his own age, but he did own a variety of pets – cats, guinea pigs, a St. Bernard. His parents were, in several ways, a unique couple. His father, Reed, was a small, quiet, apparently unassertive man. Frances Albee, on the other hand, seems to have been loud, aggressive, domineering. She was also twenty-three years younger and a foot taller than her husband. Other of Albee’s biographers usually stress her love of riding and suggest that her usual daytime wear was jodhpurs and a riding crop. Young Edward, who disliked riding, apparently felt more at home with his grandmother (Mrs. Albee’s mother). Albee’s school record was, in the conventional sense, a very bad one. Sent to a boarding school at the age of eleven, he was eventually dismissed from it for cutting classes, ignoring his academic work, not playing compulsory sports, and general bad behaviour. To encourage him toward greater self-discipline, his mother sent him to the Valley Forge Military Academy. Albee’s conduct, however, was apparently a problem that the resources of the academy were not designed to cope with, and he left that school too, at the school’s request.

    THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF LIFE WRITING VOLUME X (2021) SV33–SV56 Bodies and self-disclosure in American female confessional poetry Carmen Bonasera University of Pisa Abstract Far from being a mere thematic device, the body plays a crucial role in poetry, especially for modern women poets. The inward turn to an intimate autobiographical dimension, which is commonly seen as characteristic of female writing, usually complies with the requests of feminist theorists, urging writers to reconquer their identity through the assertion of their bodies. However, inscribing the body in verse is often problematic, since it frequently emerges from a complicated interaction between positive self-redefinition, life writing, and the confession of trauma. This is especially true for authors writing under the influence of the American confessional trend, whose biographies were often scarred by mental illness and self-destructive inclinations. This paper assesses the role of the body in the representation of the self in a selection of texts by American women poets—namely Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Elizabeth Bishop, Adrienne Rich, and Louise Glück—where the body and its disclosure act as vehicles for a heterogeneous redefinition of the female identity.
