On Saturday, June 22 from 1500-1800 we will be hosting the annual celebration of Sail, called Summer Sailstice, with the NYCP Florida Commodores Association (FCA) chapter. This will also be a Marina Party where we invite all the skippers and family of those who berth/dock their boats at BGM to come over for some light food and beverages. Please mark your calendars and plan to

join us at the Crow’s Nest for fun with friends. Navy Cup should be one of the best in years Celebrating 88 years of history…. because we have at least two other clubs (PYC and PBYC with Grand Lagoon joining on Sunday) committed to bring their teams on both Saturday (PHRF/big boat) racing and Sunday (One- Design/small boat). The Notice of Race (NOR) is posted on the Racing tab of our website. The post-race party and awards presentation will begin about 1500 each day. There will be Regatta Dogs and hamburgers on Saturday and Swabby (sloppy) Joe’s on Sunday. All the racing on Sunday will be within Bayou Grande and visible from the Crow’s Nest inside (air conditioned) or on the balcony. Hope to see you there. We especially appreciate all the Skippers in the PHRF Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker divisions who choose to compete for Navy and the small boat sailors who will compete on Sunday in Sunfish, Laser and Hobie Wave divisions. We are the defending Navy Cup Champions and we definitely want to repeat again this year. Bring home the Cup! One final BIG SALUTE to Kim Kaminski and her Navy Cup Brochure Ad Sales team. We have exceeded last year’s sales with over $5300 earned. This is our only real fund raiser of the year and helps us support our youth sailing scholarships, racing programs and the Commodores Ball in December. Thanks to all who bought ads and those who assisted Kim in the sales. Well done! See you soon The Navy Yacht Club will now be using the on the water or at the Crow’s Nest. GALLEY BITES By Julie Connerley

The fellowship of NYCP is special--especially during monthly meetings when those gathered indulge in "breaking of bread." After a theme is decided upon, the call goes out for members to bring various meal items. The variety and taste never disappoints. To share the good eats with those who missed the meeting, we will be offering a column with the recipe of one of the dishes cooked/baked/fried/steamed. Before leaving the Crow's Nest, members are asked to relay to me, their "favorite" item on that night's menu. If you need extra helpings or more time to decide, you can always email me at [email protected]. Like the Kentucky Derby themed meal, there were multiple choices in the running, and it was a tough call for this inaugural recipe. We are pleased to recognize Sandy Pyle and her Kentucky Bourbon Chicken. Bon appétit!

The trophy will be awarded to the winning skipper of the first race of the Junior Lipton Regatta. "The lighthouse was selected for this award because lighthouses provide stability, vision, direction, guidance and safety - all of which are facets of Commodore Chamberlain's mission to help young sailors love the sport as much as he loved it."

NOTABLE SAILORS There have been many notable sailors in the GYA – those who have won national and world championships, and who have qualified and/or gone to the Olympics – Marcus Eagan, John Dane, Zak Fanberg, Ricky Welch, Jackson Benvenuitti, Amy Kleinschrodt, Anne Edwards – just to name a few. We’re hoping to include in the 100th Anniversary book a chapter on our notable sailors. I have information on some of the sailors from way back – Gene Walet, Buddy Friedrichs, Gilbert Gray, Andrew Labano, and others – but very little or no information on recent (as in from about 1950 to date) sailors. IF THERE IS SOMEONE IN YOUR CLUB (past or present) WHO SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS CHAPTER OF THE BOOK, I need: their name, a sailing resume (from which I can pull the information needed) and, where possible, PHOTOS (either a head shot, a shot of them on the water at an event). You can send the information to me or have the individual send it to me via e-mail at [email protected]

We seriously don’t want to overlook anyone, but we need US Sailing – GYA your help!! Please do not assume I have the needed information on any individual. To the contrary, please assume I have nothing on anyone. I would much rather have too much information from which to choose as opposed to not enough.

Attention Navy Yacht Club Boat Owners: If you keep your boat at the Bayou Grande Marina (BGM) and need to have someone work on your vessel or prepare your boat for Storms and they do not have a military ID to gain access onto the base – please contact Marina Manager Keith Raisch or Trey Taunton in the Bayou Grande Marina Office. The boat owner Dr. Shelley Jean Ovsak at must accompany the contractor to the Main Gate Pass the Nevada State Line with the NYCP burgee Office and sponsor the contractor, have the 5512 filled out, etc. (just as NYCP does with our non-DoD members) and the contractor will be placed on an access/vetted list. From that point forward, the owner must call BGM at (850) 452-4152 when they want to have the contractor do work and BGM will alert/work with the Pass Office to get them on-base. The contractor shows his ID at the Gate and will be allowed entry and access to BGM. No escort required (same as it works for our non-DoD members once vetted). If you have any questions please contact: Bayou Grande Marina Open 0600 to 1800 hrs daily [email protected] 850-452-4152 Office, FAX 850- 452-3613
