On Saturday, the twenty-second, after a five-day trial at the Old Bailey in London, the expatriate American doctor Hawley Harvey Crippen was found guilty of poi soning his wife Cora, who was best known by her stage name of Belle Elmore. And on the following Monday, Mark Wilde entered the dock in Court Number One at Chester Castle to stand trial for the stabbing of George Harry Storrs. He was the second person to be tried for the murder—the first, Cornelius Howard, a cousin of the victim, having earlier been found not guilty. The "Gorse Hall mystery," as it became known from its mise-en-scene, the stately residence of the murdered man near the town of Stalybridge in Cheshire, was at that time almost twelve months old; and it had captured the imagination of the British public since the morning of November 2, 1909, when, according to one reporter, "the whole country was thrilled with the news of the outrage." Though Storrs, a wealthy mill-owner, had only a few weeks before erected a massive alarm bell on the roof of Gorse Hall after telling the police of an attempt on his life, it did not save him from being stabbed to death by a mysterious intruder. Citizenship in schools 2006/09 In 2006, the report Towards consensus? provided a picture of citizenship as an emerging presence in schools, with many gains since its introduction in 2002 but with considerable barriers to be overcome. This report, based on a similarly sized sample of schools, shows steady progress as citizenship becomes more widely understood and acquires depth in the light of experience, but also highlights what these schools need to tackle if citizenship is to be firmly established. It addresses the following research question: • What is the social impact of Everton Free School for its students? The focus is on how the school provides the conditions for social empowerment. In this case, the relationships between teachers and students, the activities and opportunities that the school offers beyond the core curriculum, along with care and support systems are key aspects. Methods The research was conducted during 2018 in collaboration with the School and involved the following: 1. Development of a database of school leavers 2. Design and administration of a school leaver survey 3. A series of non-participant observations and in-depth semi-structured interviews Key findings Most of our interviewees described large class sizes and a lack of support and care from teachers as major problems in their previous mainstream education. -

The recipients: The Rt Hon Theresa May MP, Prime Minister The Rt Hon Justine Greening MP, Secretary of State for Education The Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for School Education Lord Kerslake, Chair of UK Northern Powerhouse Advisory Board Directors of Children’s Services, North West Members of Parliament, North West An open response to funding for secondary education in the North West We are writing to you to express our significant concerns regarding the unprecedented cuts to school budgets we face as headteachers of secondary schools in the North West of England. We know that the Government requires schools to find £3bn in savings by 2019 / 2020. This figure is validated by the National Audit Office and is, in reality, an 8% cut to school budgets. The Department for Education has insisted that it has protected school budgets in real terms. As headteachers we can clearly demonstrate that this is not the case. Secondary schools in the North West have already had to make savings to cope with over £97,000,000 of additional annual employment costs which schools now pay in the form of increased national insurance and pension contributions. This annual figure represents an actual cut to school budgets as these costs have not been funded by the Government. We will have to find savings approaching £400,000,000 by 2020 without even factoring in the impact of inflation and the apprenticeship levy. The impact of this is potentially devastating, with schools already considering cuts to arts provision, the curriculum, and the ability to maintain current opening hours.
