Butkov, editors This publication presents part of the findings of the regional GEF project “In situ/ on farm conservation and use of agricultural biodiversity (horticultural crops and wild fruit species) in Central Asia” implemented in five countries - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The project is coordinated by Bioversity International (IPGRI) with financing from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), and implementation support from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Cereals (wheat, barley, rice, maize, sorghum), food legumes (bean, chickpea), vegetables (tomato, potato, onion, garlic, coriander), melons, industrial, and stimulant crops (cotton, sugar beet, groundnut, sesame, tobacco) are cultivated in the region. Plant species in the region number 8,100; 890 of them are endemic. About 400 of them are listed in the IUCN “Red Data Book” as endangered. Particularly important crops in Central Asia are the temperate fruit species. Production of european pears (Pyrus communis L.) in the eastern United States is limited by a number of physiological and pathological problems. In an attempt to expand sustainable pear production in that region, a series of long-term field trials of asian pear [Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm. F) Nak. (syn. Pyrus serotina L.)] were established at two sites in Maryland. To compare precocity, productivity, and survival, nine asian pear cultivars and three European cultivars were planted in a replicated trial in 2010 at the Wye Research and Education Center (Wye REC). The asian pears were precocious and productive and many trees flowered and fruited in the second leaf. After the fourth leaf, survival of ‘Isi’iwasi’, ‘Shinsui’, ‘Kosui’, and ‘Olympic’ was good, while many ‘Hosui’ and ‘Ya Li’ (asian pear) trees as well as ‘Bartlett’ and ‘Golden Russett’ (european pear) trees had died at that point, following bloom infections of fire blight (Erwinia amylovora).

In 2015, a powdery mildew caused by a fungus belonging to Erysiphe sect. Uncinula was recorded on two species of ash, Fraxinus excelsior and F. pennsylvanica (Oleaceae), from Ukraine (Kyiv, two localities). Based on the comparative morphological analysis of Ukrainian specimens with samples of Erysiphe fraxinicola and E. salmonii collected in Japan and the Far East of Russia, the fungus was identified as E. salmonii. This identification was confirmed using molecular phylogenetic analysis. This is the first report of E. salmonii not only in Ukraine but also in Europe. It is suggested that the records of E. fraxinicola from Belarus and Russia could have been misidentified and should be corrected to E. salmonii. In 2016, the fungus was found not only in Kyiv but also outside the city. The development of the fungus had symptoms of a potential epiphytotic disease. Thus, it may become invasive in Ukraine and spread to Western Europe in the near future.

The study included Pyrus communis L., Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl., Cydonia oblonga Mill., Crataegus azarulus L., Malus domestica Borkh., Prunus persica (L.) Batsch., Prunus persica var. nectarina (Sol.) Maxim., Prunus persica var. platycarpa (Decne.) L.H. Bailey, Prunus domestica L., Prunus domestica var. italica (Borkh.) Schneid., Prunus cerasus L ., Prunus armaniaca L. and Rosa damascene Mill. Seeds were glabrous except of R. damascene were pubescence. Seeds of Prunus were coated by brown thin dry cover (testa) and in other genera were near this color either reddish brown as of M. domestica or light brown as of C. azarulus or dark brown– black as of E. japonica . Most seeds were ovate or obovate but were elliptic in P. armaniaca , puffed Oblong in E. japonica , spherical in P. persica var. platycarpa and were hemi spherical in C. azarulus . Seeds of Prunus were covered by hard woody endocarp; each type has different color and surface sculptures. Prunus, Rosa Introduction have five petals (simple flowers), whereas high numbers of Rosaceae is cosmopolitan, 115 genera and 3200 petals (double flowers) are typical attributes of most of the species, with economic importance especially in the tropical cultivated roses (Annick Dobois et al., 2010).
