Steers to £1375 Heifers to £1185

A tremendous number of cattle forward at Exeter on Friday with a big entry of over four hundred store cattle a little more difficult to place as the dry conditions seen of late start to affect the trade. Having said that anything of real quality were still very much in demand as steers saw a top of £1375 for an outstanding Limousin (25m) from the Risdon family of Broadwoodkelly with other steers out of the same trailer close at £1360 and heifers with the same comments topping that section at a very decent £1185. Grand South Devon steers (25m) from Helen Havill of Trusham sold well and to £1280 a price matched for an Angus bullock (21m) from Neil & Kate Lethbridge of East Allington. Further Angus bred sorts (27m) from Chris Poad, Saltash reached a high of £1265 with Blue steers (21m) again for Neil & Kate Lethbridge to £1255 (they also sold top priced Hereford steers, 21m at £1170). Eighteen month types were headed by a cracking Simmental (19m) from Stephen Pearce of Menheniot at £1170 whilst a pair of Blue and Limousin steers from Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough fetched £1160 apiece. Younger fifteen month old sorts saw £1060 for the better of a classy run of Blonde cross cattle from Peter & David Morris down from Aylesbury. Yearling store steers from WJ Berry & Son, Kenn sold well and to £1090 for a bunch of seven striking Angus. Top heifer already mentioned whilst Angus females (21m) drew £1160 for Neil & Kate Lethbridge as did a couple of decent Blues (28m) from Chris Poad, Holstein Friesian heifers (30m) saw £1090 for Stuart Broom of Cullompton. Blonde cross heifers (19m) reached £1055 for Peter & David Morris with yearling sorts off the same farm to £900.

Another excellent summer show of over one hundred head of youngstock saw a slightly lower trade as seen everywhere this week, with the weather forecast lacking any promise of rain not helping matters. For the second week running quality suckler bred Limousin steer calves from J Chisholm, Hatherleigh topped the sale with best sorts (11m) reaching £960 with other close at £925 and £890. More top quality beef bred steers from Steve Barkwill, Tavistock drew plenty of interest and sold to £860 for a single Blue steer (11m) and £850 for a couple of smart Limousin steers of a similar age. Younger calves (8m) from Mike & Angela Bassett of South Brent sold well and to £720 again for Limousin steers whilst Angus steer stirks fetched to £630 (11m) from Kevin Dinnis of Tedburn and £520 for dairy cross Angus steers (8m) from Julian Courtier of Whiddon Down. Weaned heifers (11m) saw a high of £615 for Blues from Hatherley & Rendle of Plymouth with later born Charolais females (9m) off the same farm reaching £560. A bunch of four neat Blue heifers from George Hill and family of Tavistock rose to £540 apiece and young Simmentals ran to £525 for a trio from John & Jill Redman of Chagford. A good run of organic stirks saw steers (10m) to £690 for Colin Drake of Crockernwell with his younger sorts (7m) at £620 and heifers (8m) to £680. Other organic status sorts from Ron Barter, Dunsford saw Limousins (8m) to £525 for steers and £565 for heifers.

Summer Sale of 52 Pedigree Limousin Cattle A cracking entry of Pedigree Limousins saw a selective trade as we start to see the effect of very little rain and a shortage of grass and forage. The cows and calves topped at 2570gns for “Sloughpool Eillen” a 2009 born daughter of Lumbylaw Penandpaper with her October born bull calf by Loosebeare Ipad from Messrs CR & MM Gollop & Sons of Cullompton who sold other similar outfits to 2450gns twice, 2400gns, 2300gns, 2000gns & 1900gns. The same vendor also sold a 2009 born In Calf Cow “Sloughpool Ellen” by Penandpaper due in July, she sold for 1700gns. Two useful cows & calves from Messrs C & S Partridge of Tiverton saw a 2014 born cow by Columbpark Firefox sell with her March born steer calf at 1920gns and a 2015 born cow by the same sire at 1880gns. Heifers sold to 1400gns twice for heifers by Loosebeare George for David & Russell Stevens of Crediton. Other maiden heifers to 1200gns twice for two smart heifers by Claragh Jackpot from Gary Dunn of Okehampton.

Monthly Beef Breeding Sale The commercial section saw bulls top at £2100 for a 2013 born Limousin from Mr MA Partridge of Christow with another purebred Limousin to £1700 for Andrew Cleave of Moretonhampstead. A 2013 born Pedigree Simmental bull made £1350 for Paul Rowden of Totnes. The continuing dispersal of Cows & calves for Clifford Squire of Okehampton saw a top of £1720 for a 2014 born Limousin Cow with her May born Blonde Steer calf with other similar outfits to £1700, £1510, £1500, £1470, £1460, £1440, £1430 & £1400. Pedigree South Devon Cows & Calves met a steady trade topping at £1520 for The Tully Partneship with “Waddeton Saffron 17” a 2013 born cow by Wellend Valley Hero 5, she sold with her March born bull calf. Other similar outfits to £1480 & £1450 twice. A 2013 born Aberdeen Angus Cow sold with her April born steer calf at £1320 for Mrs J White of Okehampton.

A small entry of store sheep on Friday saw the first seasons store lambs sell to tops of £74 & £65 for nice three-quarter meat continental bred lambs from Robert & Christine Steer of South Brent, £70 for sizable Jacob crosses from P Balaam of Kingsteignton and £63 for Dorset crosses from Wyatt & Isaac of Ipplepen. Small lambs from £19 to £55 and the overall average was £57.

25 GRAZING EWES & STORE HOGGS

Grazing ewes and hoggs sold to £80 & £68 again for P Balaam, £72.50 & £70 for D Wood of Washfield and £68 also for Brian Webber of Cullompton.

43 BREEDING EWES

A handful of pens of breeders saw two pens of Dorset x Charollais shearlings sell at £81 for Marles Farm Services of Farringdon and £77 for an in-lamber from D Wood and Suffolk cross older ewes reached £76.50 again for P Balaam.

12 EWES & 16 LAMBS (28 LIVES)

A small end of season show of couples were topped by D Wood with FM doubles with nice lambs at £180 & £168 as well as a smart 4T single at £144 and other singles at £138 & £130.

29th ANNUAL SALE OF 990 ACRES OF STANDING STRAW – 1PM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935

This year’s annual sale of standing straw saw just under 1,000 acres entered which met keen competition throughout, with outstanding prices being achieved for winter barley, winter wheat and winter oats. The top price on the day was for winter barley from The Earl of Devon, c/o of R & P Farming Ltd, Powderham, going on to achieve an incredible £128 per acre. Other land parcels containing the same attained £125, £124 and £118 per acre. Further winter barley, this time from R & MV Martin of Crediton achieved £108 per acre. Onto winter wheat, again from the Earl of Devon, c/o of R & P Farming Ltd, situated at Powerderham topped at £125 with other land parcels realising £119, £116 and £114 per acre, while winter oats from the same holding topped at £122. Further winter oats this time from TG Mortimer & Son hit £106 with other land parcels achieving £104, £103 & £102. While a short show of spring barley saw the best top at £35 for Drake & Son of Exeter. Excellent prices achieved throughout the sale, with averages as follows: 136 acres of winter barley averaged £115.61, 496 acres of winter wheat averaged £97.63, 313 acres of winter oats averaged £99.54 and 28 acres of spring barley averaged £33.57.
