It arrived unbidden, and within moments we were knee deep in Laurel Canyon,tripping our asses off, staring at the burning embers of a fire while some longhair guitarist tossed off a Donovan riff and talked about metaphysical stuff. Canyon of Dreams was written by longtime Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon music historian and writer Harvey Kubernik, and tackles the vast history of Laurel Canyon, from the earliest efforts to carve a community into the hills, to the birth of the jazz age, through the 50s-era cocktail era, the surf scene and, of course, the doped-up hippie years that birthed the country rock movement. The book is as much a photo book as a prose book; each page is lavishly Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon with gorgeous shots of a long-gone Los Angeles. Postcards sit next to cocktail lounge matchbooks, fliers, tickets, handbills, newspaper ads — evidence of not only another time, but another mindset. And then there are the photographs, which capture Laurel musicians at their most charismatic. But also the lesser knowns or non-sequiturs: the Firesign Theatre rehearsing; a striking young Barbara Hershey; Nirut Wilde looking beautiful; Miles Davis talking to some whitey; Bianca Jagger with Rodney Bingenheimer. Of course, the name album itself pays ode to the creative scene in Laurel Canyon at the time, of which she was a member, and has multiple themes referencing the aura. The song was released on their album, Deja Vuand became an instant classic. Following the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, Richie Furay went on to form Poco, one of the pioneering country-rock groups of the era, along with Jim Messina and Rusty Young. Another reason I put him on this list, in this exact spot? Because of a photo, one of my favorite photos from this era. If I could have sat in on a moment…. Musicians and madmen would come strolling into the cabin day or night looking for a party and a story, and it was with Frank that many people came together to make history. While the group only performed together 4 or 5 times, they gained notoriety when they opened for Wild Man Fischer, Alice Cooper, and the Mothers of Invention at Shrine Auditorium in While far from refined, I love the psychedelic sound of these early Alice Cooper recordings, which seem a far cry from, and yet still set the groundwork for, the harder sound for which they eventually became known. At the same time, with the rise of the Eagles began the demise of the Canyon scene. As previously mentioned, J. Not only did he provide a wealth of his own material, he was an influence to other notables such as Linda Rondstat, Eagles, and Jackson Browne. Which leads me to the fact that, pre-Eagles, Glenn Frey and Souther had Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon band together called Longbranch Pennywhistle. Browne began writing songs for established acts such as Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Nico, and the Eagles, before getting signed by David Geffen to Asylum Records and releasing his eponymous album in So much of this article was drawn from my knowledge gained by reading many books on the subject. And, given the recent flurry of articles headlining the return of the Laurel Canyon sound, precious little space is given to its contemporary status. For instance, Dawes is mentioned only in passing, even having backed both Robbie Robertson and Jackson Browne, while Jonathan Wilson, the man who produced both their records and is credited as the focal point of the current revival of the scene, is little more than an afterthought in his truncated interview. Jazz culture became thoroughly embedded in these secluded surroundings too, in part by its connection with the cinematic community. In so doing, The Magic and The Music of Laurel Canyon would appear an unremittingly crystal clear snapshot rather than an intermittently blurry slideshow. Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

Loss Leaders releases dating back to 1969 (and even a little earlier). For those who lived through the era, Warner Bros. Records was winning the sales of an entire generation by signing and supporting some of music’s most uniquely groundbreaking recording artists… during music’s most uniquely groundbreak- ing time. With an appealingly irreverent style (“targeted youth marketing,” it would be called today), WB was making lifelong fans of the kids who entered into the label’s vast catalog of art- ists via the Loss Leaders series—advertised on inner sleeves & brochures, and offering generous selections priced at $1 per LP, $2 for doubles and $3 for their sole 3-LP release, Looney Tunes And Merrie Melodies. And that was including postage. Yes… those were the days, but back then there were very few ways, outside of cut-out bins or a five-finger discount, to score bulk music as cheaply. Warners unashamedly admitted that their inten- tions were to sell more records, by introducing listeners to music they weren’t hearing on their radios, or finding in many of their (still weakly distributed) record stores. And it seemed to work… because the series continued until 1980, and the program issued approximately 34 titles, by our questionable count (detailed in later posts). But, the oldsters among us all fondly remember the multi-paged, gatefold sleeves and inviting artwork/packaging that beckoned from the inner sleeves of our favorite albums, not to mention the assorted rarities, b-sides and oddities that dotted many of the releases.
