It all started in a small town nestled on the edge of the French Alps. That’s where Seraphin Bollé and his son pursued their passion, utilizing a mix of innovation, self-sufficiency and plain hard work to create Bollé ®. I really do believe that I can accomplish what I set out to accomplish. —Alana Nichols The words ‘courage’, ‘determination’ and ‘champion’ are used a lot when describing Olympians. But when it comes to Alana Nichols, those words have never been more accurate. At the age of 17, Alana Nichols was snowboarding during an annual family vacation in Colorado. Attempting an ambitious back flip on the snowy mountains, Alana over twisted, lost control and landed forcefully on a rock, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. The years that followed required tremendous courage and commitment as she recovered from this accident and became even stronger than she was before. While recuperating, Alana took an interest in the sport of wheelchair basketball. After two years of hard work and training, she found herself as an alternate for the U.S. Women’s Team during the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. Alana’s determination eventually led to her becoming a full-time member of the national team. And in 2006, she won her first silver medal at the 2006 Wheelchair Basketball Championship. In 2008, Alana was on the big stage again at the Paralympic Games, this time on a basketball court on the other side of the world, in Beijing, China. And that day, she and her teammates won Gold. But Alana, didn’t celebrate long. Instead, she moved to Colorado, with her eye set on an entirely different sport – Alpine skiing.

    Preserving Maine’s Skiing Heritage • Summer 2014 A quarterly publication of the Ski Museum of Maine, Kingfield, Maine • 207-265-2023 www.skimuseumofmaine.org • [email protected] Finding ‘lost’ ski areas: History hobby has strong roots in Maine By Scott Andrews Editor, Snow Trail They seek telltale remnants of skiing’s past: the lanky steel frame of a long-abandoned T-bar terminal thrusting through the puckerbrush, an ancient automobile engine rusting on a hilltop or a lone sheave train wedged in the branches of a tree. It’s the search for “lost” ski areas. It’s a interesting hobby and it’s happening all over the U.S. Few of the many practitioners know that the national lost ski area phenomenon has strong Maine roots and draws inspiration from our state. Or that Glenn Parkinson, who recently retired as president of the board of directors of the Ski Museum of Maine, was both a pioneer and an inspiration. It’s been nearly four decades since the T-bar at Mt. Agamenticus in York carried its last skier, but the derelict machinery still fascinates people who seek “lost” ski areas. SKIANDSNOWBOARD HALLOFFAME U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Announces the Incoming Class of 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 30, 2020, ISHPEMING, MI - A star-studded group of eight ski and snowboard athletes and sport builders were named for induction into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame’s Class of 2020 following the Hall’s annual election. The announcement was made by the Hall of Fame in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America. Plans for a formal induction ceremony are pending. The eight inductees include the late Howard Peterson (Kamus, Ut.), leader and visionary at the U.S. Ski Team; Olympic downhill racer Holly Flanders (Park City, Ut.); ski area mastermind Brian Fairbank (Jamestown, Ny.); Two-time Olympic snowboard champion Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, Me.); longtime International Ski Federation and U.S. Ski Team leader Hank Tauber (Park City, Ut.); FIS Cross Country World Cup winner Alison Owen (Wenatchee, Wa.). ; inventor of THE Ski, Bobby Burns (Ithol, Id.); and U.S. Ski Team Freestyle aerialist Kristean Porter (Sugarloaf, Me.). Toutefois, il a toujours la réputation d’être le plus dynamique, le plus progressif et le plus influent de tous les sports d’hiver. Il est donc difficile de savoir qui a construit la première planche à neige. Depuis qu’ils jouent dans la neige, les enfants tentent de dévaler la pente la plus proche en se tenant debout sur leur luge. On sait toutefois que la première planche à neige a été lancée sur le marché en 1965. Créé par Sherman Poppen de Muskegon, au Michigan, le « Snurfer » n’était en fait que deux skis retenus ensemble que le surfeur « stabilisait » en tenant une corde fixée à l’avant. Plus d’un demi-million de ces « jouets » ont été vendus dans les années 1960 et le Snurfer a révolutionné les sports d’hiver. Quatre autres personnes sont associées à l’origine du surf des neiges que l’on appelle aussi planche à neige.

Maine Olympians exhibit made possible by the generous support of Maine is a special place Maine’s landscape, history, and communities have all played a part in the state’s Winter Olympic story. History Scandanavian immigrants first brought cross country skiing to Maine in 1870 when the state recruited more than 100 Swedes to immigrate and settle the town of New Sweden in northern Maine. Soon Norwegian and Finnish immigrants followed and settled across the state, bringing their skiing traditions and competitive spirit. In the early 20th century, towns celebrated winter with Winter Carnivals featuring Nordic competitions in cross country and ski jumping. Rivalries and the establishment of ski clubs and ski facilities followed, as Mainers pursued their passion for snow. Skiers, New Sweden, ca. 1935 Collections of New Sweden Historical Society Landscape Maine’s landscape is ideal for developing outstanding winter athletes. From miles and miles of cross country trails to challenging alpine terrain, opportunities to learn and perfect skiing and snowboarding skills abound. Communities Maine, a largely rural state, is known for its close knit communities. Several communities have developed strong Nordic and Alpine programs that have encouraged and supported young athletes. Maine’s many small community ski areas make skiing and snowboarding accessible and affordable to a broad range of people, and several Maine high schools have highly competitive ski teams.
