It was also the dawn of a new era for the USSA with the completion of our new national training and education facility, the Center of Excellence. It was a year unmatched for the scope of World Championship medals across so many sports. Lindsey Vonn, Todd Lodwick, Billy Demong, Patrick Deneen, Ryan St. Onge and Stephani Victor each won World Championship gold. Vonn, Hannah Kearney, Lindsey Jacobellis, Laurie Stephens and Chris Devlin-Young also took season-long World Cup titles. But the year was not without hardship, with the USSA facing similar economic challenges as companies across our country and the world. Our organization responded swiftly and decisively to protect, as best as possible, our athletic programs. And we maintained a strong direction for our Vancouver Bound athletes to achieve our USSA Olympic goals this coming season. Despite these challenges, we can be proud of these and other accomplishments: • World Championship titles and medals in alpine, freestyle, snowboarding and adaptive, including an unprecedented six nordic medals. • Final work was completed on the USSA Center of Excellence, on-time and under budget, for a May 1 opening. • A partnership with the City of Park City resulted in a low-interest, tax-free bond to finance the Center of Excellence, allowing the Legacy Campaign endowment to grow and prosper for future generations. • Sport science and sports medicine continued to play a pivotal role in the preparation of athletes in all sports. • Sport education took giant steps towards the deployment of new technologies to bring educational content to constituents nationwide with the development of Center of Excellence TV. • Despite challenges with the economy, the USSA continued to renew sponsors and bring in new partners including Alka-Seltzer Plus, X-box and Sorel. • New fan Web sites were deployed at usskiteam.com and ussnowboarding.com and strategies deployed in the new area of social media. • While overall membership dropped slightly for the first time in nine years, the number of USSA member clubs grew to 425. • Online membership registration was deployed, creating greater efficiencies and service to members. • The USSA is bidding for the 2015 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships with Beaver Creek/Vail establishing itself as a lead candidate, while Deer Valley Resort prepares for the 2011 FIS World Freestyle Championships It is in challenging economic times like this that you appreciate, even more, the dedication of our staff and volunteers to helping athletes achieve their dreams. We all participate in sports that require a lifetime commitment from athletes to achieve success. But, likewise, it requires a similar dedication from family, friends, fans and our entire volunteer infrastructure. That’s the spirit of Olympism! In each of our 425 USSA clubs, there are men and women whose lives are dedicated to providing opportunities to athletes. I admire that deeply and know that behind every medal are dozens and dozens of supporters who share in that success. Your organization has that same dedication in its board leadership. I want to especially thank USSA Chairman Dexter Paine and U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation Chairman Jeanne Jackson for their guidance. Both take significant time from their business careers to help our organization and athletes. As we head into the Olympic season, I want to congratulate USSA athletes at every level on your success. And a special thanks to all of the USSA coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and parents for all you did to help make that possible. Vancouver Bound!
