2008–09 Annual Report 2 • MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The cheers of victory were heard across nearly all of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s sports in 2008- 09, with World Championship medals in alpine, freestyle, , nordic and adaptive. It was also the dawn of a new era for the USSA with the completion of our new national training and education facility, the Center of Excellence. It was a year unmatched for the scope of World Championship medals across so many sports. Lindsey Vonn, Todd Lodwick, Billy Demong, Patrick Deneen, Ryan St. Onge and Stephani Victor each won World Championship gold. Vonn, Hannah Kearney, Lindsey Jacobellis, Laurie Stephens and Chris Devlin-Young also took season-long World Cup titles. But the year was not without hardship, with the USSA facing similar economic challenges as companies across our country and the world. Our organization responded swiftly and decisively to protect, as best as possible, our athletic programs. And we maintained a strong direction for our Bound athletes to achieve our USSA Olympic goals this coming season. Despite these challenges, we can be proud of these and other accomplishments: • World Championship titles and medals in alpine, freestyle, snowboarding and adaptive, including an unprecedented six nordic medals. • Final work was completed on the USSA Center of Excellence, on-time and under budget, for a May 1 opening. • A partnership with the City of Park City resulted in a low-interest, tax-free bond to finance the Center of Excellence, allowing the Legacy Campaign endowment to grow and prosper for future generations. • Sport science and sports medicine continued to play a pivotal role in the preparation of athletes in all sports. • Sport education took giant steps towards the deployment of new technologies to bring educational content to constituents nationwide with the development of Center of Excellence TV. • Despite challenges with the economy, the USSA continued to renew sponsors and bring in new partners including Alka-Seltzer Plus, X-box and Sorel. • New fan Web sites were deployed at usskiteam.com and ussnowboarding.com and strategies deployed in the new area of social media. • While overall membership dropped slightly for the first time in nine years, the number of USSA member clubs grew to 425. • Online membership registration was deployed, creating greater efficiencies and service to members. • The USSA is bidding for the 2015 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships with Beaver Creek/Vail establishing itself as a lead candidate, while Deer Valley Resort prepares for the 2011 FIS World Freestyle Championships It is in challenging economic times like this that you appreciate, even more, the dedication of our staff and volunteers to helping athletes achieve their dreams. We all participate in sports that require a lifetime commitment from athletes to achieve success. But, likewise, it requires a similar dedication from family, friends, fans and our entire volunteer infrastructure. That’s the spirit of Olympism!

In each of our 425 USSA clubs, there are men and women whose lives are dedicated to providing opportunities to athletes. I admire that deeply and know that behind every medal are dozens and dozens of supporters who share in that success.

Your organization has that same dedication in its board leadership. I want to especially thank USSA Chairman Dexter Paine and U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation Chairman Jeanne Jackson for their guidance. Both take significant time from their business careers to help our organization and athletes.

As we head into the Olympic season, I want to congratulate USSA athletes at every level on your success. And a special thanks to all of the USSA coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and parents for all you did to help make that possible.

Vancouver Bound!

Bill Marolt President and CEO U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association about USSA • 3

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) is a world class athletic organization providing opportunities for athletes in the most exhilarating Olympic action sports. It is driven by a vision to be best in the world with an emphasis on building character through strong personal values and a focus not only on today but on development for the future. The USSA offers programs in six unique sports including alpine skiing, cross country, freestyle, nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboarding. The USSA also manages two Paralympic sports in adaptive alpine and cross country. The organization’s new national training and education facility, the Center of Excellence, provides world class support for elite athletes and feeds a national information network pushing educational content to athletes, coaches, officials and parents in the USSA’s network of grassroot clubs.

USSA Athletic Programs The USSA has 30,000 members, including over 22,000 athletes. A network of over 50,000 fans and donors provides ongoing support. Membership has continued to increase for eight years, with strong growth in youth - over half the athletes are 13 and under. A growing network of over 425 USSA clubs provides opportunities to participate in all levels of skiing and snowboarding competition. The USSA provides education and support to local coaches, officials, parents and volunteers, a local and national calendar of events, competition rules, and a development system to provide for advancement from grassroots up through the national Team. The USSA provides leadership and guidance to support competition venue development, approval of courses, inventory of protection equipment and education of clubs and officials, sanctioning over 4,000 domestic competitions each year. Over half of USSA sanctioned events are scored to its national ranking lists, providing measurements for athlete advancement. Development competitions in most sports include Junior Olympics and Continental Cups including NorAms, the USSA Alpine Super Series, the Cross Country SuperTour and snowboarding’s Revolution Tour and Race to the Cup. U.S. Championships are conducted in each sport. The USSA’s alpine masters program (21 and older) features over 400 events annually. Over 5,500 parents and volunteers dedicate their time as USSA officials to ensure the best competition environment, and embodying the true spirit of Olympism. USSA Sport Education continues growth in its educational material sales and clinic participation, now adding the versatility of Center of Excellence TV in providing valuable resources for almost 4,200 member coaches plus athletes and parents. Over 600 coaches are taking advantage of the USSA’s multi-level certification program. The USSA’s series of 18 educational CDs and DVDs are considered among the best offered by Olympic sports.

Showcasing the Sports The USSA showcases skiing and snowboarding through major events and national television. Domestic World Cups and U.S. Championships in alpine, freestyle and snowboarding, plus the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, were seen by millions of fans with 32 hours on NBC Sports and Versus, plus coverage on Universal Sports TV and UniversalSports.com, as well as Fuel TV and Go211.com. USSA events generate major national exposure for the sport, host resorts and communities and sponsors. Local economic impact of USSA events has been measured at $2.4 million, with most major events generating over $1 million in measured media value. An athletic focus is paramount at the USSA’s events. Among the many vital host resorts are Legacy venues such as Deer Valley Resort, Lake Placid, Beaver Creek, Aspen and Park City Mountain Resort – all among the most notable venues in the world. U.S. sites like Deer Valley, host to the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Championships, and Beaver Creek/Vail, a leading candidate for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Championships, have brought special international recognition to America. Major U.S. and international companies continue to be attracted to the excitement of USSA events and Teams with the exposure they generate for national and global brands. Among the major U.S. business leaders who partner with the USSA are Visa, Sprint, Spyder, General Mills’ Nature Valley brand, Charles Schwab, Audi, Alka Seltzer Plus and Delta Air Lines. 4 • 2008–09 ANNUAL AWARDS

USSA Foundation

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation is the nonprofit, fundraising arm of the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding. The 501(c)3 Foundation raises money to support year-round athlete training, coaching, development, competition and educational needs.

A unique aspect of the USSA’s athletic programs is that they receive no Federal funding. American ski and snowboarding fans make up the base of support for the Teams. It is through private donations, corporate sponsorship and grants that the USSA continues to thrive and to help young athletes achieve their dreams of being best in the world in skiing and snowboarding.

With many opportunities to support the organization’s efforts, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation focuses on programs including major gifts, special events including Ski and Snowboard Balls, direct marketing and the Summit Club which includes the popular Gold Pass. 14 • FOUNDATION

Center of Excellence

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association has completed the most important project in its more than 100-year history. The national training and education center in Park City, the Center of Excellence represents the strongest commitment to the USSA’s athletes, and stakeholders, as it embodies the spirit of the sport.

The USSA’s Center of Excellence is a state-of-the-art structure designed to serve today’s athletes with world-class facilities and strengthen the development of tomorrow’s Olympic skiers and snowboarders. Construction on the $22.5 million Center of Excellence began in the fall of 2007 and was completed April 30, 2009. It was built entirely with private funds raised as a part of the USSA’s Legacy Campaign endowment. Staff and athletes ...

“The Center represents our heart and soul,” said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. “It is our commitment to the hundreds of young athletes striving for their Olympic dream and brings all of us together, across all sports, as one great American ski and snowboarding team. Furthermore, it will reignite the Olympic spirit from 2002 here in Utah.”

The 85,000-square foot Center of Excellence blends the best of high-performance athletic facilities including a sport science lab, sports medicine center, strength and cardio training areas, a gymnasium, ski and snowboarding ramps, trampolines, a nutrition center and rehabilitation facilities. Plus, it features educational areas for athletes, coaches and clubs such as a computer lab, multimedia rooms for performance analysis and equipment workshops. All of the high performance and educational resources are shared through the internet with the USSA’s 400 clubs and 30,000 members around the country.

USSA athletes are excited about the Center of Excellence opening new training and recovery opportunities.

“Our competition is tough. They do everything they can to beat us. The USSA’s Center of Excellence is our counter. It is what we can do to beat everyone else. Within a few short years, the building will prove to be worth its weight in gold, gold medals that is,” said aerials athlete Ryan St. Onge.

“I’m excited to have the Center of Excellence in Park City because it brings a lot of athletes and a lot of programs together under one roof. I really think it’s a flagship move on the part of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. I don’t think there’s any other training center of that caliber by any national governing body anywhere. I think the Center of Excellence will increase the productivity of the relationships among the coaches, athletes and administration because everybody is under one roof and it keeps the mission closer at hand,” added nordic combined World Champion Billy Demong.

“This is a huge step for all of the athletes and for the USSA as an organization. Even more than having an incredible gym literally a mile away from my home, it’s awesome to see the top athletes from all the sports work out. It’s huge for the club programs to have this facility as a resource,” Lindsey Vonn, alpine champ said.

The Center of Excellence serves as a magnet for the ski and snowboarding sports community in a variety of ways. With its numerous conference rooms and state of the art electronics it fulfills the goal of education for the 400 clubs, 30,000 members, and skiers and snowboarders nationwide. Clinics and seminars produced in the building’s teaching centers are already available free online to anyone in the U.S.

It enhances the value for USSA stakeholders at every level – from the athletes, coaches and staff to clubs, volunteers, corporate partners, donors and other supporters. Funding for the Center of Excellence is supported through the USSA’s Legacy Campaign endowment. The endowment, through the support of generous contributors also adds The medals chandelier and athlete banners in the more than $1 million a year to athletic development. lobby of the Center of Excellence. Through the generosity of Shelby Davis, Erik Borgen, Jim Swartz, and other generous benefactors the USSA is able to provide financial assistance and educational programs to athletes who wish to pursue their higher education goals. There are over 50 current and/or retired U.S. Ski Team or U.S. Snowboarding athletes working toward a college degree at a variety of universities across the country, including Dartmouth College, University of Nevada Reno, Westminster College, University of Utah, and University of New Hampshire. Over $300,000 of scholarship funds were distributed in the past two years to allow athletes to participate in the programs noted below.

Rookie Camp – The USSA’s rookies are introduced to the culture and structure of the USSA. Workshops are provided that cover topics in community service, NCAA eligibility, money skills, agent representation, USADA, sponsor support, image communications and educational opportunities.

24 athletes attended this year’s “Tomorrow’s Legends” rookie camp at the Center of Excellence.

Tuition Reimbursement Program – This program provides tuition assistance for U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding elite athletes who meet the eligibility criteria.

16 athletes received assistance this year.

Laptops for Learning – Dell laptops are made available to U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding athletes to enable them to Tomorrow’s Legends Rookie Camp 2009 members after a team building activity at the National Ability Center pursue online/distance-learning courses while traveling as a member of the Team.

We have 7 athletes using this program now.

Hoyt-Dartmouth Language Program - The Hoyt/Dartmouth Language Program is an intensive ten-day language course offered by The Rassias Foundation ALPS XVIV at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and made possible by donations from Judy Hoyt.

Mrs. Hoyt’s generous contribution allows the USSA to send approximately seven U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding athletes, coaches, and staff to the Hoyt/Dartmouth Language Program annually.

Rosetta Stone – Rosetta Stone software is the number one language-learning software in the world. The USSA’s agreement allows all U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding athletes, coaches, and the USSA staff the opportunity to access 10+ languages via the Internet at no cost.

70 athletes completed over 1000 assignments last year.

University of Utah Resident Tuition Program – The University of Utah has extended in-state tuition to U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding athletes who move to Utah primarily for athletic purposes. This allows athletes the in-state tuition rate beginning in the first semester of study.

Westminster College Tuition Grant Program - Qualifying U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding athletes will receive full tuition grant scholarships to attend Westminster College.

We currently have 37 athletes approved to receive grants at Westminster; 23 took classes in 2009.

USOC Opportunities – Tuition grants and career programs are available through the USOC. USSA hosted two USOC/Adecco seminars at the Center of Excellence to assist athletes with creating their career game plans.
