NAMGAR The Kansas City MG Car Club is a chapter of the North American MGA Register (NAMGAR). The Register was established in 1975, with the sole objective of promoting the restoration, preservation, and enjoyment of the MGA, Magnette, and their Variants. While NAMGAR started as a register of MGA’s in North America, it soon became an organization to join, as evidenced from a membership roster of folks from all over the world! It immediately became the catalyst for very special social gatherings. NAMGAR is managed by unpaid volunteer Board and Staff members. They give their expertise and time freely in an effort to make NAMGAR the best MG club in the world.: Cost of membership in the NAMGAR is $37.50 North America/$52.50 International per year and unique dash plaque indicating your car’s Register number, NAMGAR’s award winning magazine, MGA!, six times a year and other benefits. NAMGBR The Kansas City MG Car Club is a chapter of the North American MGB Register. The North American MGB Register was formed in 1990 to serve the needs of MG owners throughout the world. The Register’s execu- tive committee is elected by the Affiliated Chapters. Officers can only serve two con- secutive terms which ensures that new peo- ple and fresh ideas are always available. Finances are open to inspection at any time and the Treasurer provides financial state- ments that show how the membership’s money is spent. Officers and Registrars receive no financial remuneration for their duties, but volunteer out of the spirit of the marque. The award-winning magazine MGB Driver is published six times a year. Cost of membership in the NAMGBR is $30.00 per year and includes a dash plaque with your membership number, the MGB Driver magazine, and other benefits. Page 3 Kansas City MG Post Volume 38 Issue 11 Lawrence Region Antique Auto Club of America Car Show Sunday, October 6th turned out to be a cloudy, chilly, somewhat misty day, but it didn’t deter 113 classic cars from showing up at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence for the 47th annual car show. 15 British cars showed up — five from our club: Roger Elliott & Pat Fischer in their TR250, Drew Helgeson in his MGB Roadster, Steve Olson in his Midget, Susan McKenzie in her Morris Mini Minor, and Rick & Monica Mills in their MGB Roadster. British cars always seem to make a great showing at this annual event. Susan McKenzie not only won 1st Place in “Foreign Vehicles— 1989 & Earlier”, she also won “Best of Show” in the Foreign Car category. Way to go Susan!!!! (cont. on page 4) Page 4 Kansas City MG Post Volume 38 Issue 11 Lawrence Car Show (cont. from page 3) The “Feature Make” this year was the 1955-57 Chevys. Lots of other rare and beautiful cars were at the show, including a perfectly pristine 1930 Model A. John Styers’ uncle won 2nd Place for Domestic and “Best of Show” for all around Domestic with his 1939 Studebaker President. Page 5 Kansas City MG Post Volume 38 Issue 11 Toly Arutunoff Returns to Lake Garnett By Russ Sifers Toly Arutunoff is an internationally celebrated sports car racer and unique car collector. He raced a 1957 Porsche Carrera Speedster GS at the original Lake Garnett Grand Prix in 1959, the first year. Toly raced all over the SCCA races in the U.S and also raced in Europe. He won the 1981 H-Production SCCA national championship and the President’s Cup. Toly came back to the Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival this year to celebrate the 60th anniversary and to run his 2002 Qvale Mangusta in the 80 MPH group. Toly and Brian Haupt (who raced in 1972, the last year of the original races) were named our Grand Marshals. Pam and I had the honor of hosting Toly for the weekend at Lake Garnett and listening to his many stories. Toly enjoyed showing his car Saturday. It is a rare Italian car with a Ford V-8. Less than 300 were made. While he enjoyed showing his car, he had even more fun running on Sunday. Many other drivers came to Toly to greet him and get their photos taken with him. Others, like me, bought his books (“One Off” and “Steering with Your Knees”) and had him autograph them. How did Toly enjoy the current Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival? In one of my books he wrote, “Garnett is an undiscovered JEWEL!” and in the other, “The only thing sweeter than VALOMILKS is a fast lap around Garnett.” Post Script – Toly really loved lunch at the track with the MG and Triumph clubs on Sunday! He loved the food (thank you Larry). He loved the people. Russ and Toly after they ran in their different groups. The Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival (LGGPR) was a great success this year. LGGPR is an exciting weekend experience for people of all ages from all walks of life with a wide variety of automotive interests, experiences, and knowledge. Thousands of people gather in the friendly community of Garnett, Kansas to drive vintage dreams, sleek racing machines, show-room classics, and daily drivers on an historic road around Lake Garnett. The weather was warm and windy on Saturday, but on Sunday, when Monica and I were there in our ‘69 MGB, it was a perfect day – 70° and no wind, lots of beautiful cars and lots of noise. Again this year, Russ Sifers was the sponsor of Valomilk Charity Rides. Any spectator could donate $10 and then select a ride around the famous Lake Garnett Raceway in an array of sports cars giving rides. Thanks Russ!!! To top it off, Larry Taylor put on a spread for the KCMGCC and KC Triumph Car Clubs on Sunday. Larry cooked lots of brats and hot dogs and made his famous chili. You could eat chili dogs or just have chili and cheese. A KCMGCC club tent was erected along with a super tall British flag borrowed and brought by Susan McKenzie. The special flag was very visible from quite a distance. Thanks Susan! (see pictures of the picnic on page 8) We were also honored to have sit with us at our tent the Grand Marshall, 83-year-old Anatoly 'Toly' Arutunoff. Some of us older people know him because he owned Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Jennings, Oklahoma. Some guys stopped by our tent to have their original programs from the '60s signed by Toly because he also was in that original program. Our clubs got to enjoy seeing that. Those attending from our club were: Larry Taylor, Denny and Ruth Hale, Jim and Elaine Hager, Steve Olson, Scott Hughes, Drew Helgeson, John Styers, Susan McKenzie, Chris Cassell, Michael and Debra Moore, Russ Sifers and Pam Gardner, Robert Griffey, Gary Gumminger, Chris and Peyton Coulter, and Rick and Monica Mills.
