Our standard of living is inextricably tied to the price of a barrel of oil — and oil is inherently linked to the spectre of pollution — not just within the industry but by everyone who uses petroleum products. In Santa Barbara, nearly everyone has an opinion about oil development. Desperate arguments as to why it need not take place off our shore are not thoroughly convincing. Our petroleum resources will be developed. Although no one really knows just when our oil reserves will playfout, most experts would agree that we have between 40 and 80 years of oil left worldwide. As petroleum supplies dwindle, it's possible that our future will be more desperate and less concerned with the
