Sherwood) Hominin cranial remains from the Dinaledi Chamber, South Africa, We examined the endocast morphology of H. naledi from the represent multiple individuals of the species Homo naledi. This Dinaledi Chamber and compared this morphology with other species exhibits a small endocranial volume comparable to Aus- hominoids and fossil hominins. The skeletal material from the tralopithecus, combined with several aspects of external cranial Dinaledi Chamber includes seven cranial portions that preserve anatomy similar to larger-brained species of Homo such as Homo substantial endocranial surface detail, representing partial crania habilis and Homo erectus. Four bird bones were collected from the surface of the Johannesburg, South Africa Dinaledi Chamber during the first phase of the initial excavations. Although mentioned in the initial geological and taphonomic reports, the bird remains have not been formally identified and described CORRESPONDENCE TO: Ashley Kruger until now. Here we identify these remains as the extant barn owl (Tyto alba) which is today common in the region and which is considered to have been an important agent of accumulation of microfaunal EMAIL: remains at many local Plio-Pleistocene sites in the Cradle of Humankind. First, how do analyses of human-animal relationships throughout the twentieth and twenty-first century Spanish literature suggest more inclusive visions of multispecies community? Second, what can these representations of animal protagonists tell us about the ways in which authors might resist hegemonic practices of socially- sanctioned violence toward both humans and non-humans? Finally, more broadly speaking, how might the consideration of a non-Anglophone cultural context such as Spain’s inform current work in literary ecofeminism, ecocriticism, and the environmental humanities? To answer these questions, my analyses draw on theories primarily from animal studies and ecofeminist philosophy. Any ecofeminist approach recognizes all forms of marginalization and systemic violence as inextricably entangled. My analysis adopts ecofeminist Josephine Donovan’s theory that practicing literary analysis through an ethic of care can inspire a cultural change in attitude that discourages domination and promotes responsibility and respect for humans and nonhumans alike. I follow Spanish ecofeminist philosopher Alicia H. Puleo’s adaptation of this idea in the Spanish context in forming my analyses. -

Approximately 1550 specimens of hominin remains have been recovered from at least 15 individuals, representing a small portion of the total fossil content. Macro-vertebrate fossils are exclusively H. naledi, and occur within clay-rich sediments derived from in situ weathering, and exogenous clay and silt, which entered the chamber through fractures that prevented passage of coarser-grained material. The chamber was always in the dark zone, and not accessible to non-hominins. Bone taphonomy indicates that hominin individuals reached the chamber complete, with disarticulation occurring during/after deposition. The original study of this new material has pointed to a close proximity with Homo erectus. More recent investigations have, to some extent, confirmed this assignment. Here we present a phenetic analysis based on dentocranial metric variables through Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis based on these fossils and other Plio-Pleistocene hominins. Our results concur that the Dinaledi fossil hominins pertain to genus Homo. However, in our case, their nearest neighbors are Homo habilis and Australopithecus sediba. We suggest that Homo naledi is in fact a South African version of Homo habilis, and not a new species. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. ―All the beef to the heels were in‖: Advertising and Plenty in Joyce‘s Ulysses by MINDY JO RATCLIFF (Under the Direction of Howard Keeley) ABSTRACT Privileging a historicist approach, this document explores the presence of consumer culture, particularly advertising, in James Joyce‘s seminal modernist novel, Ulysses (1922). It interrogates Joyce‘s awareness of how a broad upswing in Ireland‘s post-Famine economy precipitated advertising-intensive consumerism in both rural and urban Ireland. Foci include the late-nineteenth-century transition in agriculture from arable farming to cattle-growing (grazier pastoralism), which, spurring economic growth, facilitated the emergence of a ―strong farmer‖ rural bourgeoisie. The thesis considers how Ulysses inscribes and critiques that relatively affluent coterie‘s expenditures on domestic cultural tourism, as well as hygiene-related products, whose presence on the Irish scene was complicated by a British discourse on imperial cleanliness. -

Through literature analysis, the conditions that foster cannibalism are introduced and explained with principles of evolution. The different types of cannibalism are identified with examples that cover a variety of invertebrate and vertebrate organisms. The cultural and biological evolution of cannibalistic practices observed in humans are also discussed. The scope of cannibalism and its adaptations are narrowed by case studies of fish, and specifically the largemouth bass. An experimental design was proposed by the Richardson lab in order to determine the health of largemouth bass in the New York lake, Lake Minnewaska. The largemouth bass were the only fish species to inhabit Lake Minnewaska since 2014, so the health of this population was determined from data acquired by mark and recapture, scale analysis, and standard measurement techniques. The relatively stable population trends and below average growth of the largemouth bass were consistent with the literature on cannibalistic largemouth bass and supported the hypothesis that cannibalism was an evolutionarily adaptive means of survival for the largemouth bass in Lake Minnewaska. The evolution of cannibalistic practices under starvation environments was exemplified in the largemouth bass population of Lake Minnewaska and may be used to understand the state of natural ecosystems. -

Randolph-Quinney1,2 AFFILIATIONS: September 2015 saw the release of two papers detailing the taxonomy1, and geological and taphonomic2 context 1School of Anatomical Sciences, of a newly identified hominin species, Homo naledi – naledi meaning ‘star’ in Sesotho. Whilst the naming and Faculty of Health Sciences, description of a new part of our ancestral lineage has not been an especially rare event in recent years,3-7 the University of the Witwatersrand presentation of Homo naledi to the world is unique for two reasons. Firstly, the skeletal biology, which presents Medical School, Johannesburg, a complex mixture of primitive and derived traits, and, crucially, for which almost every part of the skeleton is South Africa represented – a first for an early hominin species. Whilst amateur cavers had been periodically visiting the South Africa chamber for a number of years, the 2013 incursion was the first to formally investigate the system for the fossil remains of early hominins. The exploration team comprised Wits University scientists and volunteer cavers, and CORRESPONDENCE TO: was assembled by Lee Berger of the Evolutionary Studies Institute, who advocated that volunteer cavers would use Patrick Randolph-Quinney their spelunking skills in the search for new hominin-bearing fossil sites within the Cradle of Humankind.
