How was Kango (Sino-Japanese Words) Treated in the Early Days of Broadcasting: − Exploring the Records of NHK Broadcasting Language Committee − Takehiro SHIODA (Summary) This report discusses how kango, or Sino-Japanese words, was used in broadcasting mainly during the period from the commencement of broadcasting in Japan to the start of the Pacific War, focusing on “issues on usage” and “issues on reading.” (1) Earlier days prior to the launch of the Broadcasting Language Committee Radio broadcast started in 1925, and the Broadcasting Language Committee was established nine years later. However, a movement advocating the use of easy-to-understanding words in broadcasting existed before the launch of the Committee. (2) 1934 to 1936 The Committee worked on the standardization of the use of homonyms (words identical in sound and words similar in sound) as much as possible. The Committee also tried to standardize the pronunciation of each kango which had multiple reading variants. (3) 1937 In the wake of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July 1937, a large number of personal and place names of China became mentioned in broadcasts. Among them there were some names which listeners could not easily associate with corresponding kanji (Chinese characters) only by phonetic information. Besides, as one kanji usually has multiple pronunciations in the Japanese language, Chinese personal and place names as well as Buddhist terms were often read in different ways. The Committee started organizing the pronunciations of such terms. (4) 1938 Priorities in dealing with kango idioms with different pronunciations had been rather “commonly- used-pronunciation-oriented,” but a sign of “dictionary-pronunciation-oriented” moves loomed around that time. -

Here, Japanese technocrats demarcated the borderlands through categories of ethnicity and livelihood. At the center of this endeavor was the perceived problem of nomadic decline: the loss of the region’s deep history of transhumance to Chinese agricultural expansion and capitalist extraction. -

9. Princeton in Beijing (PiB) a. Matthew Walak, Summer 2019 Final Report I originally planned to keep a blog, but I quickly discovered PiB left me with neither the time nor the energy to maintain a weekly blog. As a result, here’s my final report: A lot happens at Princeton in Beijing in a very short amount of time. I could not fully process my experience until I returned home and had time to think about it for a few days. From the perspective of a second-year Chinese student, my entire summer was essentially a non-stop Chinese class from the moment my plane touched down in Beijing to the moment I returned to Boston. In terms of workload, the weekdays were tough. Channeling my inner STEM major, here are some fun numbers: Daily class time: 4 hours 10 minutes (4 x 50 min classes + 1 x 50 min one-on-one class) Daily homework average: 3 hours 36 minutes (Monday through Friday) Total class time, homework, tests, and test preparation: 291 hours 8 minutes Total working days in China: 39 days Percentage of awake time on working days spent studying or in class: 46.7% (Assuming 8 hours of sleep, which was not always the case) Essentially, Monday through Friday, almost half of the time I was awake was spent studying or in class. We had a few weekend cultural excursions to see tourist attractions such as the Great Wall, the 2019 Beijing horticulture exhibition, and the Marco Polo Bridge. We also had the opportunity to see a Chinese opera (Which ended up being in French), and Chinese acrobatics. -

Modern Hong Kong Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Asian History Modern Hong Kong Steve Tsang Subject: China, Hong Kong, Macao, and/or Taiwan Online Publication Date: Feb 2017 DOI: 10.1093/acrefore/9780190277727.013.280 Abstract and Keywords Hong Kong entered its modern era when it became a British overseas territory in 1841. In its early years as a Crown Colony, it suffered from corruption and racial segregation but grew rapidly as a free port that supported trade with China. It took about two decades before Hong Kong established a genuinely independent judiciary and introduced the Cadet Scheme to select and train senior officials, which dramatically improved the quality of governance. Until the Pacific War (1941–1945), the colonial government focused its attention and resources on the small expatriate community and largely left the overwhelming majority of the population, the Chinese community, to manage themselves, through voluntary organizations such as the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. The 1940s was a watershed decade in Hong Kong’s history. The fall of Hong Kong and other European colonies to the Japanese at the start of the Pacific War shattered the myth of the superiority of white men and the invincibility of the British Empire. When the war ended the British realized that they could not restore the status quo ante. They thus put an end to racial segregation, removed the glass ceiling that prevented a Chinese person from becoming a Cadet or Administrative Officer or rising to become the Senior Member of the Legislative or the Executive Council, and looked into the possibility of introducing municipal self-government. -

The History of the Yen Bloc before the Second World War Woosik Moon The formation of yen bloc did not result in the economic and monetary integration of East Asian economies. Rather it led to the increasing disintegration of East Asian economies. Compared to Japan, Asian regions and countries had to suffer from higher inflation. In fact, the farther the countries were away from Japan, the more their central banks had to print the money and the higher their inflations were. Moreover, the income gap between Japan and other Asian countries widened. It means that the regionalization centered on Japanese yen was destined to fail, suggesting that the Co-prosperity Area was nothing but a strategy of regional dominance, not of regional cooperation. The impact was quite long lasting because it still haunts East Asian countries, contributing to the nourishment of their distrust vis-à-vis Japan, and throws a shadow on the recent monetary and financial cooperation movements in East Asia. This experience highlights the importance of responsible actions on the part of leading countries to boost regional solidarity and cohesion for the viability and sustainability of regional monetary system. 1. Introduction There is now a growing literature that argues for closer monetary and financial cooperation in East Asia, reflecting rising economic and political interdependence between countries in the region. If such a cooperation happens, leading countries should assume corresponding responsibilities. For, the viability of the system depends on their responsible actions to boost regional solidarity and cohesion. -

The Impact of the Second World War on the Decolonization of Africa Erin Myrice 2 “An African poet, Taban Lo Liyong, once said that Africans have three white men to thank for their political freedom and independence: Nietzsche, Hitler, and Marx.” 1 Marx raised awareness of oppressed peoples around the world, while also creating the idea of economic exploitation of living human beings. Nietzsche created the idea of a superman and a master race. Hitler attempted to implement Nietzsche’s ideas into Germany with an ultimate goal of reaching the whole world. Hitler’s attempted implementation of his version of a ‘master race’ led to one of the most bloody, horrific, and destructive wars the world has ever encountered. While this statement by Liyong was bold, it held truth. The Second World War was a catalyst for African political freedom and independence. -

War Crimes in the Philippines during WWII Cecilia Gaerlan When one talks about war crimes in the Pacific, the Rape of Nanking instantly comes to mind.Although Japan signed the 1929 Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, it did not ratify it, partly due to the political turmoil going on in Japan during that time period.1 The massacre of prisoners-of-war and civilians took place all over countries occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army long before the outbreak of WWII using the same methodology of terror and bestiality. The war crimes during WWII in the Philippines described in this paper include those that occurred during the administration of General Masaharu Homma (December 22, 1941, to August 1942) and General Tomoyuki Yamashita (October 8, 1944, to September 3, 1945). Both commanders were executed in the Philippines in 1946. Origins of Methodology After the inauguration of the state of Manchukuo (Manchuria) on March 9, 1932, steps were made to counter the resistance by the Chinese Volunteer Armies that were active in areas around Mukden, Haisheng, and Yingkow.2 After fighting broke in Mukden on August 8, 1932, Imperial Japanese Army Vice Minister of War General Kumiaki Koiso (later convicted as a war criminal) was appointed Chief of Staff of the Kwantung Army (previously Chief of Military Affairs Bureau from January 8, 1930, to February 29, 1932).3 Shortly thereafter, General Koiso issued a directive on the treatment of Chinese troops as well as inhabitants of cities and towns in retaliation for actual or supposed aid rendered to Chinese troops.4 This directive came under the plan for the economic “Co-existence and co-prosperity” of Japan and Manchukuo.5 The two countries would form one economic bloc. -

ÖN SÖZ Sömürgecilik, geçmişi aslında antik çağlara uzanan bir tarihi vakıadır. Bu ise konuyu gerçekten bir dersin sınırları içinde ele alınması zor bir hale sokmaktadır. Dolayısıyla elinizdeki ders materyalinin konusu modern sömürgecilikle sınırlıdır. Şüphesiz modern sömürgecilik coğrafî keşiflerin bir ürünüdür. 19. yüzyılda neo-colonialism kalıbına girse de birçok geçmiş özellikleri devam etmiştir. Bununla birlikte I. Dünya savaşı sömürgecilik mücadelesinin patlama noktasıdır. Bu dersin sınırları şimdilik I. Dünya Savaşı’nın başladığı 1914 yılına kadar getirildi. Bundan sonraki süreç ve sömürgeciliğin girdiği yol farklı değerlendirmelerin konusu olabileceğinden daha çok sömürgeciliğin ne olduğu, nasıl geliştiği ve yöntemleri üzerinde durularak konunun daha iyi anlaşılmasına gayret olundu. Bütün bu altyapı elbette I. Dünya Savaşı ve sonrasındaki sürecin anlaşılmasında büyük fayda sağlayacak ve kişinin kendi bilgisini ilerlete bileceği bir alt yapı sunacaktır. Ele alınan dönemin bir başka sıkıntısı coğrafî olarak oldukça geniş bir sahanın mevzubahis olmasıydı. Bu nedenle bazı tasarruflara gidilerek, sömürgecilik uygulamalarının izlerini bugün dahi yaşayan bölgeler ve ülkelere daha fazla yer ayrıldı. Bu yapılırken tarihin pragmatik, bugün için fayda getirecek bilgi sunma yönü göz önünde bulunduruldu. Son olarak elbette elinizdeki bu ders materyali sömürgecilik tarihini geçmişten bugüne getirip, ortaya koyma iddiasında değildir. Yapılmaya çalışılan olayların gelişimi açısından oynadığı rol, genel gidişata ve sonucu etkileri bakıından önemli görülen konuların bir bütünlük içerisinde sunulmasıdır.
