Received: 3 August 2011; in revised form: 30 August 2011 / Accepted: 8 September 2011 / Published: 10 October 2011 Abstract: Sea cucumbers, belonging to the class Holothuroidea, are marine invertebrates, habitually found in the benthic areas and deep seas across the world. They have high commercial value coupled with increasing global production and trade. Sea cucumbers, informally named as bêche-de-mer, or gamat, have long been used for food and folk medicine in the communities of Asia and Middle East. Nutritionally, sea cucumbers have an impressive profile of valuable nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. A number of unique biological and pharmacological activities including anti-angiogenic, anticancer, anticoagulant, anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antithrombotic, antitumor and wound healing have been ascribed to various species of sea cucumbers. Therapeutic properties and medicinal benefits of sea cucumbers can be linked to the presence of a wide array of bioactives especially triterpene glycosides (saponins), chondroitin sulfates, glycosaminoglycan (GAGs), sulfated polysaccharides, sterols (glycosides and sulfates), phenolics, cerberosides, lectins, peptides, glycoprotein, glycosphingolipids and essential fatty acids.

This small genus has sixteen species currently considered valid. The present paper describes a new Indo-West Pacific species, Actinopyga caerulea, of which the most striking character is its bluish coloration. The ossicle assemblage of the new species resembles mostly that of A. bannwarthi Panning, 1944 and A. flammea Cherbonnier, 1979. Key words: Echinodermata, Holothuroidea, Actinopyga, new species, Indo-Pacific Introduction Recent expeditions (in 2003 and 2004) to the Union des Comores, an archipelago in the northern Mozambique Channel, yielded several specimens of a species that had previously been photographed at several localities in the Pacific Ocean (Erhardt & Moosleitner 1995; Erhardt & Baensch 1998; Lane pers. comm.; Myers pers. comm.; Colin pers. comm.; see also plate 1). Cherbonnier & Féral (1984) recorded, and later Féral and Cherbonnier (1986) published a photograph of a specimen from New Caledonia which they identified incorrectly as Actinopyga crassa Panning, 1944. Other specimens have been photographed and no voucher material collected, making definitive identification impossible.

Labe 7 1. Introduction Over-harvesting of shallow-water holothuroids, commonly known as sea cucumbers, throughout their geographical range has become an international concern. The alarming volume of extraction and trade in the high value processed meat, known by the trade names “trepang” and “beche-de- mer” came to the attention of international bodies such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES). The aforesaid entities initiated separate fora that provided the avenues to discuss the varied and country-specific issues on sea cucumber fisheries and trade. To wit: the FAO’s Advances in Sea Cucumber Aquaculture and Management Workshop (ASCAM) in 2003 and the CITES International Workshop for the Conservation of Sea Cucumbers in the Families Holothuriidae and Stichopodidae in 2004. The CITES has been looking into listing the species in its Appendices according to the category of threat on the survival of Figure 1. Traditional sea cucumber fishing grounds wild populations. Recently, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conducted initiative of the Council underscored its stand that the “Red List Categories” training for Filipino fisheries management should be under the purview taxonomists and marine biologists.

  • Status and Management of the Sea Cucumber Fishery of La Grande Terre, New Caledonia
Status and management of the sea cucumber fishery of La Grande Terre, New Caledonia From October 2006 to May 2008, The WorldFish Center coordinated a ZoNéCo project to provide support to the Southern and Northern Provinces for decisions about how best to manage the sea cucumber fishery around La Grande Terre. We collected data during underwater population surveys, questionnaire-based interviews with fishers and processors, and landing catch surveys. A core aim was to furnish the Provinces with ‘ballpark’ estimates of the abundance and density of commercially important sea cucumbers on 50 lagoon and barrier reefs. Analysis and synthesis of the ecological and sociological data provide the basis for informed recommendations for fisheries management. Counts of trochus and giant clams on the reefs allow us to also describe the general status of those resources. We propose 13 recommendations for management actions and fishery regulations and advocate an adaptive management approach. This multi- disciplinary study should serve as a useful template for assessing other fisheries, and we provide a series of generic ‘lessons learnt’ to aid future programmes. • Field Observations of Sea Cucumbers in the North of Baa Atoll, Maldives Frédéric Ducarme1,*
26 SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #35 – March 2015 Field observations of sea cucumbers in the north of Baa atoll, Maldives Frédéric Ducarme1,* Abstract This report describes the results of a sea cucumber survey that was conducted on the coral reefs of the islands north of Baa atoll for two months in 2014. The main result of this survey is the scarcity of sea cucum- bers — and echinoderms in general — in Baa atoll, along with poor diversity, largely dominated by the Holothuriidae Pearsonothuria graeffei, followed by several Stichopodidae. This study increases the number of holothurian species recorded in the Maldives to around 25, depending on determination of ambiguous observations, and 18 for Baa atoll alone. Habitats were described (Joseph 1992), with the population collapse of most using a hierarchy of coral cover (from 0 for no coral of the high value species (James and Manikfan cover to 5 for >90% of cover, as in Jimenez et al. 1994), leading to a tightening of exports, along with 2012), as well as for damaged coral and sand. Vol. 12(35), pp. 5466-5472, 28 August, 2013 DOI: 10.5897/AJB2013.13020 ISSN 1684-5315 ©2013 Academic Journals African Journal of Biotechnology http://www.academicjournals.org/AJB Full Length Research Paper Nutritional value of some Egyptian sea cucumbers Nahla El-Sayed El-Shazly Omran Zoology Department, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt. Accepted 21 August, 2013 Functional food that contains biologically-active compounds is an important source for prevention, management and treatment of chronic diseases in the modern age. The present work showed the quality of some Egyptian sea cucumbers to encourage Egyptian natives using them as an alternative food. The present work investigated the morphometric parameters, the proximate chemical composition, the amino acids and fatty acid profiles of Actinopyga mauritiana, Holothuria scarba, Bohadschia marmorata and Holothuria leucospilota. The results showed that Actinopyga mauritiana had the highest length, width, weight, and body wall thickness. All the investigated sea cucumbers had high content of protein (43.23 to 48.27%), carbohydrates (44.62 to 48.56%) and very low content of fats (4.6 to 5.66%). Among the investigated specimens A. mauritiana showed the highest percentage of total protein (48.27%), Holothuria leucospilota showed the lowest level of total lipids (4.6%), while Holothuria scarba showed the highest percentage of carbohydrates (48.65%). Glycine was the most abundant amino acids in all studied sea cucumbers (18.38 to 19.172 g/100 g) and constituted 37 to 39% of the total amino acids. Lycine: argignin ratio was low in H. scarba, H. leucospilota and B. marmorata (0.410, 0.428 and 0.9, respectively) while was higher in A.
