ABRAHAM von Kaschkar Abraham von Kaschkar, genannt der Große, (* 503; † 8. Januar 588) war der Begründer des Wiederauflebens der assyrischen Klosterbewegung im Nahen Osten (assyrische Kirche des Ostens) während des 6. Jahrhunderts1. Die nestorianische Kirche legte ihm aus Dankbarkeit den Ehrennamen „Vater der Mönche“ bei.2 Ihm, sowie seinem Nachfolger Dâdischô‘ verdanken wir die ältesten ostsyrischen Klosterregeln, die wir kennen.3 Das Klosterleben war bei den frühen syrischen und mesopotamischen Christen sehr beliebt. Einige waren der festen Überzeugung, dass nur streng zölibatäres Leben zur Erlösung führen könnte. Alle Mönche und Nonnen 1 „Als es im 6. Jahrhundert zur Reform und Wiedereingliederung des Mönchtums in die Apostolische Kirche des Ostens kam, die seit dem Ende des 5. Jahrhunderts das Mönchtum eher an den Rand der Kirche gedrängt hatte, da geschah dies nicht so sehr aus alten syrischen Wurzeln der Askese, sondern unter bewusster Aufnahme ägyptischer Vorbilder. Schon der erste große Reformator Abraham von Kaschkar griff bei der Abfassung seiner Klosterregel auf Gedankengut aus den Apophthegmata Patrum zurück. Und bei seinem Nachfolger ist unübersehbar, wie die Klosterregel des Pachominos auf ihn eingewirkt hat. Beide zeugen dafür, dass über alle dogmatischen Hindernisse der verfeindeten Konfessionen hinweg spirituelles Erfahrungswissen über den gesamten Kulturraum vermittelt wurde...“. – R.G.Kratz/ H. N. 161117a Thursday 17.11.2016 The Pope receives the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East and expresses his concern for the terrible violence in Iraq and Syria. The confirmation of existing fraternal bonds, belonging to the single Body of Christ, cooperation in charity and the common memory of evangelising activity were the key points of Pope Francis’ address this morning to His Holiness Mar Gewargis III, Catholicos and Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, and his delegation. The audience was preceded by a private meeting between the Pope and the Patriarch, and afterwards the two prayed together in the Redemptoris Mater chapel. “This meeting and the prayer that we will raise together to the Lord invoke the gift of peace”, Francis began. “Indeed, we are troubled by what continues to happen in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria. There, hundreds of thousands of innocent children, women and men are afflicted by the terrible violence of bloody conflicts, that nothing can justify or permit. There our Christian brothers and sisters, as well as different religious and ethnic minorities, are unfortunately accustomed to suffering great hardships every day”. In the midst of so much suffering, an end to which I implore, every day we see Christians who follow the way of the cross, meekly following in the footsteps of Jesus, joining with Him, He Who with His cross reconciled us. … These brothers and sisters are models that exhort us in every circumstance to remain with the Lord, to embrace His cross, to trust in His love. -

H-Mideast-Medieval A Conference Commemorating the 700th Anniversary of Abdisho bar Brikha Discussion published by Salam Rassi on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 Syriac Christianity at the Crossroads of Culture: A Conference Commemorating the 700th Anniversary of Abdisho of Nisibis Pontificio Istitito Orientale, Rome 8-9 November 2018 The ancient churches of the Middle East have long attracted the interest of scholars in the West. Yet the danger currently posed to them has occasioned renewed attention from mainstream audiences. One point of interest has been the Syriac tradition, once referred to by Sebastian Brock as the ‘third lung’ of Christianity (alongside the better-known Latin and Greek traditions). Embodying the tradition is the Church of the East, known variously throughout history as ‘Nestorian’ and ‘East Syrian,’ and which today refers to itself as the Assyrian Church of the East. With its historic base in Iraq, the Church of the East once constituted a vast, global entity that spread as far west as Cyprus and as far east China, and produced several prominent thinkers throughout the Middle Ages, some of whom were instrumental in the transmission of Greek thought into the Islamic world. Alongside its Chaldean Catholic counterpart, the Church of the East of today maintains a strong presence in northern Iraq and Iran, eastern Syria, and southern India, with diasporas across Europe, Australia, and North America. Arguably the most important author from this tradition is the polymath ʿAbdīshōʿ bar Brīkhā (d. 1317), metropolitan of the ancient See of Nisibis. He flourished in a period of literary efflorescence known as the Syriac Renaissance—an era marked by an openness to Islamic philosophy, science and literature—and wrote works in both Syriac and Arabic. -

N. 181109a Friday 09.11.2018 Meeting of the Holy Father Francis with His Holiness Mar Gewargis III, Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Address of the Holy Father Common Statement of Pope Francis and Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Gewargis III This morning, His Holiness Mar Gewargis III, Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, paid a visit to the Holy Father Francis. After a private meeting, Pope Francis and the Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Gewargis prayed together in the Redemptoris Mater Chapel of the Apostolic Palace. Finally they signed a Common Statement. The Catholicos-Patriarch was accompanied by the members of the mixed Commission for theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East. The following is the Holy Father Francis address to the Patriarch Mar Gewargis III during the meeting and the text of the Common Statement: Address of the Holy Father Your Holiness, Dear Brothers, “Peace and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph 6:23). With these words of the Apostle Paul, I greet you and, through you, the members of the Holy Synod, the bishops, the clergy and all the 2 faithful of the beloved Assyrian Church of the East. Two years have passed since our first encounter, but in the meantime I had the joy of again meeting Your Holiness in Bari last 7 July, at the Day of Reflection and Prayer for Peace in the Middle East, which you too had so greatly desired. Indeed, we share the great suffering resulting from the tragic situation endured by so many of our brothers and sisters in the Middle East, who are victims of violence and frequently forced to leave the lands in which they have always lived. -

Slide 1 What do we mean by Syriac? The spread of Syriac was due to at least two factors: the spread of Christianity in the Semitic-speaking world, and commerce on the Silk Road, both activities sometimes combined. Today, a few million Christians in India of various denominations follow the Syriac tradition. Slide 2 Syriac languages Syriac is a form of Aramaic, a language whose many dialects have been in continuous use since the 11th century BC. Originally the language of the Aramean people, Aramaic became the lingua franca of the Near East by the 6th century BC. It was the native tongue of the ancient Chaldeans, a second language to the Assyro-Babylonians, an official language of the Persian Achaemenians, and a common language of the Jews replacing Hebrew. Jesus and the Apostles spoke and preached in Aramaic. Syriac is the Aramaic dialect of Edessa Slide 3 Relat of Syriac to Arabic and Surrounding Region Slide 4 A matter of proximity, but not of the same genesis. When the Arabs desired to transmit the Greek sciences into Arabic during the 8th and 9th centuries, they turned to their Syriac subjects to do the task. In most cases, these Syriac scholars translated the works first into their native language then into Arabic. As a result, many of the Arabic scientific terminology, including the names of plants, are rooted in Syriac. Scientific works and terminology from other cultures, such as Persian and Indian, passed to Arabic via Syriac; a noted example is the name of the chemical element Zirconium (via Syriac zargono 'color of gold').
