A FG minimally consists of a head N, genitive particle and genitive DP complement. It (in a FG) expresses or conveys the meaning of possessiveness, something like of in English. There are two types of ħaqq in Yemeni Arabic: one not exhibiting agreement with the head N, and another exhibiting it. -

The first chapter deals with the po litical, social and religious background of ‘ Abd al-M alik, and relates this to his later policy on becoming caliph. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. An attempt is made to throw light on its causes, and on the policies adopted by ‘ Abd al-M alik to contain it. -

Cognate Words in Mehri and Hadhrami Arabic Hassan Obeid Alfadly* Khaled Awadh Bin Mukhashin** Received: 18/3/2019 Accepted: 2/5/2019 Abstract The lexicon is one important source of information to establish genealogical relations between languages. This paper is an attempt to describe the lexical similarities between Mehri and Hadhrami Arabic and to show the extent of relatedness between them, a very little explored and described topic. The researchers are native speakers of Hadhrami Arabic and they paid many field visits to the area where Mehri is spoken. They used the Swadesh list to elicit their data from more than 20 Mehri informants and from Johnston's (1987) dictionary "The Mehri Lexicon and English- Mehri Word-list". The researchers employed lexicostatistical techniques to analyse their data and they found out that Mehri and Hadhrmi Arabic have so many cognate words. This finding confirms Watson (2011) claims that Arabic may not have replaced all the ancient languages in the South-Western Arabian Peninsula and that dialects of Arabic in this area including Hadhrami Arabic are tinged, to a greater or lesser degree, with substrate features of the Pre- Islamic Ancient and Modern South Arabian languages. Introduction: three branches including Central Semitic, Historically speaking, the Semitic language Ethiopian and Modern south Arabian languages family from which both of Arabic and Mehri (henceforth MSAL). Though Arabic and Mehri descend belong to a larger family of languages belong to the West Semitic, Arabic descends called Afro-Asiatic or Hamito-Semitic that from the Central Semitic and Mehri from includes Semitic, Egyptian, Cushitic, Omotic, (MSAL) which consists of two branches; the Berber and Chadic (Rubin, 2010). -

HUMANITIES INSTITUTE ARABIC FOLKLORE Devin J Stewart, Ph.D. Folk Poetry and Popular Genres in the Arab World Popular poetry. The high art of the pre-Islamic Arabs was poetry, and poetry remained the prestige genre in Arabic literature until it was overtaken by the novel in the twentieth century. Oral poetry played important roles in popular culture, in which it took on a variety of forms and was used in many contexts for diverse purposes. In her book Veiled Sentiments, Lila Abu-Lughod wrote of the ghinnawa, a genre of lyrical couplets used by Bedouins of the Libyan Desert in northwestern Egypt to express deep personal emotions. The zajal is popular in Lebanon and Syria and is often performed in competitions in front of a larger audience. The Egyptian mawwaliya is a plaintive lament, a stanza of four lines that usually involves multiple puns. There are many specific genres—we will explore just a few in detail. The folk epic. One particularly interesting genre of oral poetry is that of the folk epic, termed sirah in Arabic, which usually recounts the exploits of a hero. Many such epics were popular in pre-modern times, including the epic of `Antar, the epic of the Banu Hilal tribe, the epic of Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan, the epic of Baybars, the epic of `Ali al-Zaybaq, and others. The plots of 12 well-known epics are summarized in M.C. Lyons’ work listed below. From travelers’ accounts and works such as Lane’s Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians we know that storytellers performed these epics regularly in coffeehouses and other venues for the entertainment of rapt audiences. -

ABRAHAM von Kaschkar Abraham von Kaschkar, genannt der Große, (* 503; † 8. Januar 588) war der Begründer des Wiederauflebens der assyrischen Klosterbewegung im Nahen Osten (assyrische Kirche des Ostens) während des 6. Jahrhunderts1. Die nestorianische Kirche legte ihm aus Dankbarkeit den Ehrennamen „Vater der Mönche“ bei.2 Ihm, sowie seinem Nachfolger Dâdischô‘ verdanken wir die ältesten ostsyrischen Klosterregeln, die wir kennen.3 Das Klosterleben war bei den frühen syrischen und mesopotamischen Christen sehr beliebt. Einige waren der festen Überzeugung, dass nur streng zölibatäres Leben zur Erlösung führen könnte. Alle Mönche und Nonnen 1 „Als es im 6. Jahrhundert zur Reform und Wiedereingliederung des Mönchtums in die Apostolische Kirche des Ostens kam, die seit dem Ende des 5. Jahrhunderts das Mönchtum eher an den Rand der Kirche gedrängt hatte, da geschah dies nicht so sehr aus alten syrischen Wurzeln der Askese, sondern unter bewusster Aufnahme ägyptischer Vorbilder. The actual military struggle, the subsequent settling of Arab tribes and changes in administration are discussed in chapter 1, with reference to specific sites and using local archaeological sequences. Chapter 2 assesseswhether our understanding of the archaeological record of the seventh century is detailed enough to allow the accurate dating of settlement changes. The site of Zawyet al-Sultan in Middle Egypt was apparently abandoned and partly burned around the time of the Arab conquest. Analysis of surface remains at this site confirmed the difficulty of accurately dating this event on the basis of current information. Chapters3 and 4 analysethe effect of two mechanismsof Arab colonisation on Egyptian towns. First, an investigation of the occupationby soldiers of threatened frontier towns (ribats) is based on the site of Tinnis. Examination of the archaeological remains indicates a significant expansion of Tinnis in the eighth and ninth centuries, which is confirmed by references in the historical sources to building programmes funded by the central government. Second, the practice of murtaba ` al- jund, the seasonal exploitation of the town and its hinterland for the grazing of animals by specific tribal groups is examined with reference to Kharibta in the western Delta. -
