  • Islam in Europe
The Way, 41.2 (2001), 122-135. www.theway.org.uk 122 Islam in Europe Anthony O'Mahony SLAM PRESENTS TWO DISTINCT FACES to Europe, the one a threat, the I other that of an itinerant culture. However viewed, the history of the relationship between Islam and Europe is problematic and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. The relationship between Christians and Muslims over the centuries has been long and tortuous. Geographically the origins of the two communities are not so far apart - Bethlehem and Jerusalem are only some eight hundred miles from Mecca. But as the two communities have grown and become universal rather than local, the relationship between them has changed - sometimes downright enmity, sometimes rivalry and competition, sometimes co-operation and collaboration. Different regions of the world in different centuries have therefore witnessed a whole range of encounters between Christians and Muslims. The historical study of the relationship is still in its begin- nings. It cannot be otherwise, since Islamic history, as well as the history of those Christian communities that have been in contact with Islam, is still being written. Obviously Christian-Muslim relations do not exist in a vacuum. The two worlds have known violent confrontation: Muslim conquests of Christian parts of the world; the Crusades still vividly remembered today; the expansion of the Turkish Ottoman Empire; the Armenian massacres and genocide; European colonialism of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the rise of Christian missions; the continuing difficult situations in which Christians find themselves in dominant Muslim societies, such as Sudan, Indonesia, Pakistan.

  • Laudatio in Honour of Professor Dr. Andrea Riccardi Aachen 21 May
Laudatio in honour of Professor Dr. Andrea Riccardi Aachen 21 May 2009 It is a joy and a privilege for me to deliver this Laudatio in honour of Professor Dr. Andrea Riccardi this year’s recipient of the Karlspreis. He is a man of special merit and remarkable personal depth. Permit me as an Irish European to use an Irish image. The shamrock with its three leaves was used by Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick, to illustrate the divine unity of the Blessed Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This image assists me today to illuminate three qualities of the person we honour. Andrea Riccardi the academic is a man of research and letters, an historian and a prolific author. He is a man of civil engagement who founded the Community of Sant’ Egidio which counts among its membership today sixty thousand volunteers in seventy states, including more than twenty African states. He is a man imbued with a deep sense of faith who while still at school in the student revolutionary days of the late 1960s took a road less travelled at that time and, metaphorically, arming himself with a bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other opted for that rich fusion of faith and action that has characterised his entire adult life. Research, voluntary civil engagement and faith are the three illuminated leaves of Dr. Riccardi’s shamrock that find unity of expression in his life and work. We live in a world today that paradoxically is characterised simultaneously both by the rise of individualism and the growth of interdependence.

In this scenario, the United Nations plays a key role in trying to mediate and to solve, once for all, such dispute, which is still going on after almost thirty years. The question at the basis of this thesis comes out rightly from these attempts of mediation made by different Personal Envoys of the UN Secretary-General throughout the years. Indeed, the aim of this paper is precisely that of answering to the following question: which mediation style have been mainly adopted by each of these Personal Envoys? Anyway, as it will be explained later, these mediators have often adopted more than one style, combining different strategy in order to achieve a mutually acceptable, definitive and long-lasting solution for the dispute over the final status of Western Sahara.

  • Can We Rebuild the Church's Mission in a Post-Pandemic Era?
1 CAN WE REBUILD THE CHURCH'S MISSION IN A POST-PANDEMIC ERA? INTRODUCTION The world seemed to work like a well-oiled machine when, from China, Covid-19 spread to the whole world. The year 2019 came to an end full of economic and financial success in Europe and North America. The virus astonished everyone with the speed of its transmission, the globalisation of its impact and the worldwide inability to face its consequences. The whole world (or almost) stopped. We were invited (or even forced) to stay indoors. And in two months hundreds of thousands of people died, many more were infected and this economy that seemed unshakable...suffocated. Almost everything stopped, hospitals burst at the seams, most companies went into chaos and historic deficits were announced. The whole world realized that, after all, this 'normality' was very abnormal because it did not provide any security or constitute a reasonable defence against little attacks coming from microscopic beings like a simple virus. It has demonstrated that our economic systems do not even allow us to stop for two or three months! Communication technologies have taken over the daily life of this world in panic. All our information – much of it false and demagogic – came through them. They also allowed people to communicate with each other, establishing the bonds that the virus has broken. The media informed and intoxicated, connected and broke, showed and hid. They allowed bridges to be built and ensured that believers of all faiths could 'celebrate' their faith in the context of 'spiritual fellowship'. In the age of communication This time of Covid-19 introduced many foreign expressions into our daily lives: 'lockdown', 'confinement', 'stay at home', 'tutto andrà bene', 'laudato si', 'fake news', 'smart working', 'home office', 'zoom', 'skype', 'webinar', 'live streaming', 'whatsApp', 'lay off'.

In his discourse, he acknowledges the invitation of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Head of Muslim Council of Elders: “I thank my brother, the Grand Imam, for having planned and organized this Conference, and for kindly inviting me to take part.” He also references the work of the Mixed Committee for Dialogue between the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Committee of Al-Azhar for Dialogue as an example of the “encounter of religions and cultures” on which “the future depends”. Drawing inspiration from Egypt’s place in ancient civilization, the Pontiff then explained three aspects to “assist this dialogue: the duty to respect one’s own identity and that of others, the courage to accept differences, and sincerity of intentions.” These three things “represent the best way forward together, to be builders of civility.
