Jack Haney's Introduction to the Russian Folktale Is the First Volume of an Ambi- Tious Project to Translate Anew Aleksandr Afans'ev's Russkie Narodnye Skazki
Jack V. Haney. An Introduction to the Russian Folktale. Armonk, NY and London: M. E. Sharpe, 1999. viii, 135 pp. $40.00 (cloth); $18.95 (paper). An Anthology of Russian Folk Epics. Edited by James Bailey and Tatiana Ivanova. Armonk, NY and London: M. E. Sharpe, 1998. 464 pp. $69.95 (cloth); $29.95 (pa- per). Jack Haney's Introduction to the Russian Folktale is the first volume of an ambi- tious project to translate anew Aleksandr Afans'ev's Russkie narodnye skazki. To help the North American reader cross over into the world of the Russian tale, it discusses the collecting and publication of Russian tales, performers and performance, tale con- tent, and the probable mythic and ritual basis of tales. Haney performs an especially valuable service by concentrating on the Russian perspective on this genre. Folktales are ubiquitous and one of the richest and most varied narrative types. They can be, and have been, approached in many ways. The Russian approach is probably the least familiar to the North American reader and the one most in need of explication. Folktales tend to be associated with the past, either the historical past or the past of an individual, namely childhood. In the West, Bruno Bettelheim's Uses of Enchant- ment and the works of Marie von Franz have encouraged us to look at tales in the con- text of human development, to see parallels between the psychological growth of the child and the adventures of tale heroes. More recently, Jack Zipes and Marina Wamer have drawn our attention to the political dimension of tales, the messages beneath the surface and even the commercial intent behind the folktale versions produced in film studios. -

My most heart-felt, gigantic appreciation to Dr. David Leitch, for his leadership, patience, innovative ideas, vast knowledge of political-theory, as well as political science at the intersection of aesthetic theory. Thank you also to Dr. Owen Doonan, for his amazing assistance with aesthetic theory and classical mythology. Pre-Modern Iberian Fragments in the Present: Studies in Philology, Time, Representation and Value By Heather Marie Bamford A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Jesús Rodríguez-Velasco, Co-Chair Professor José Rabasa, Co-Chair Professor Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht Professor Ignacio Navarrete Professor David Hult Fall 2010 1 Abstract Pre-Modern Iberian Fragments in the Present: Studies in Philology, Time, Representation, and Value by Heather Marie Bamford Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Literatures and Languages University of California, Berkeley Professors Jesús Rodríguez-Velasco and José Rabasa, Co-Chairs This dissertation examines the uses of medieval and early-modern Iberian cultural objects in the present. It draws on the notion of fragment and actual fragmentary testimonies to study how pre- modern Iberian things and texts are reconstituted and used for various projects of personal, institutional, national and transnational reconstitution in the present. The corpus objects are necessarily diverse in chronological scope, with examples from the medieval, early-modern and modern periods, and touch upon works of many genres: chivalric romance, royal and personal correspondence, early-modern and modern historiography, Hispano-Arabic and Hispano-Hebrew lyric, inscriptions, pre-modern and modern biographies and 21st century book exhibitions. The dissertation proposes that Iberian fragments are engaged in various forms of reconstitution or production in the present and, at the same time, are held as timeless, unchanging entities that have the capability to allow users to connect with something genuinely old, truly Spanish and, indeed, eternal. -

Paraguay (From Wikipedia)
Paraguay (from Wikipedia) Paraguay (/ˈpærəɡwaɪ/; Spanish pronunciation: [paɾaˈɣwaj]; Guarani: Paraguái, [paɾaˈɰwaj]), officially the Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay; Guarani: Tetã Paraguái), is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, which runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as Corazón de Sudamérica ("Heart of South America").[9] Paraguay is one of the two landlocked countries (the other is Bolivia) outside Afro-Eurasia, and is the smallest[10] landlocked country in the Americas. The indigenous Guaraní had been living in eastern Paraguay for at least a millennium before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Western Paraguay, the Gran Chaco, was inhabited by nomads of whom the Guaycuru peoples were the most prominent. In the 17th century, Jesuit missions introduced Christianity and Spanish culture to the region. Paraguay was a peripheral colony of the Spanish Empire, with few urban centers and settlers. Following independence from Spain in 1811, Paraguay was ruled by a series of dictators who generally implemented isolationist and protectionist policies. Following the disastrous Paraguayan War (1864–1870), the country lost 60 to 70 percent of its population through war and disease, and about 140,000 square kilometers (54,000 sq mi), one quarter of its territory, to Argentina and Brazil. Through the 20th century, Paraguay continued to endure a succession of authoritarian governments, culminating in the regime of Alfredo Stroessner, who led South America's longest- lived military dictatorship from 1954 to 1989. -
Memoria Colectiva E Histórica1

Rimsky-Korsakov and His World

David Brodbeck The Professor and the Sea Princess: Letters of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Nadezhda Zabela-Vrubel EDITED BY MARINA FROLOVA-WALKER TRANSLATED BY JONATHAN WALKER I am still filled, my dear, dear friend, Filled with your visage, filled with you! . It is as if a light-winged angel Descended to converse with me. Leaving the angel at the threshold Of holy heaven, now alone, I gather some angelic feathers Shed by rainbow wings . —Apollon Maykov (1852), set by Rimsky-Korsakov as No. 4 of his Opus 50 songs and dedicated to Nadezhda Zabela-Vrubel “I am rather dry by nature,” confessed Rimsky-Korsakov in one of his letters.1 This is indeed the prevailing impression we are likely to draw from his biographies, or even from his own memoirs. We know so much about the externals of his life, and yet the inner man somehow eludes us, obscured by his professorial image: a kindly but reserved man, with a pos- itive outlook on life, dignified and of impeccable morals. The contrast with the wild biographies of Musorgsky and Tchaikovsky allows us to suppose that Rimsky-Korsakov was really rather ordinary, even a little dreary. 1. Maykov’s Russian original of the epigraph above is as follows: Yeshcho ya poln, o drug moy milïy, / Tvoim yavlen'yem, poln toboy!. ./ Kak budto angel legkokrïlïy / Sletal besedovat' so mnoy, / I, provodiv yego v preddver'ye svyatïkh nebes, ya bez nego / Sbirayu vïpavshiye per'ya / Iz krïl'yev raduzhnïkh yego… • 3 • For general queries, contact [email protected] © Copyright, Princeton University Press. -
