The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

McGuire ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate residents’ perceptions of the social and cultural impacts of tourism on Lan-Yu (Orchid Island). More specifically, this study examines Lan-Yu’s aboriginal residents’ (The Tao) perceptions of social and cultural impacts of tourism. Systematic sampling and a survey questionnaire procedure was employed in this study. After the factor analysis, three underlying dimensions were found when examining Tao residents’ perceptions of social and cultural impacts of tourism, and they were named: positive cultural effects, negative cultural effects, and negative social effects. -

ASSERTING SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH STRATEGIC ACCOMMODATION: THE RUKAI PEOPLE AND COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION IN PINGTUNG, TAIWAN By Ying-Jen Lin A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Anthropology—Doctor of Philosophy 2020 ABSTRACT ASSERTING SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH STRATEGIC ACCOMMODATION: RUKAI PEOPLE AND COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION IN PINGTUNG, TAIWAN By Ying-Jen Lin This dissertation examines how the Rukai, an Indigenous people of Taiwan, have engaged in community-based ecotourism and the state’s conservation projects in order to assert Indigenous sovereignty over traditional territories. This study focuses on the Adiri and the Labuwan communities, which are communities of the Rukai people living in the Wutai Township in Pingtung, Taiwan. The two Rukai communities have actively collaborated with the government on various conservation projects although the relationship between Indigenous peoples of Taiwan and the settler state’s forest governance system has been riddled with conflicts. Existing research has portrayed collaborative environmental governance either as an instrument for co-optation of Indigenous interests or as a catalyst for a more equitable relationship between the state and Indigenous peoples. This dissertation builds on and extends this body of work by examining how the Rukai people have continueD to assert sovereignty in the community-based ecotourism and collaborative conservation projects. However, most of the extant literature focuses on hardware reconstruction and there is a lack of attention on the social aspect of recovery. This study aims to understand the role of culture in the recovery process of relocating indigenous communities through tourism livelihood. A Tsou indigenous settlement, relocated after the 2009 Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan, was used as a case study. Field data were collected through participant observations in tourism and community activities as well as semi-structured interviews over a period of 15 months. The study found that appealing to a relocated tribe’s culture, not their land, as their community’s foundation could reduce conflicts within the community and increase social resilience. Indigenous culture-based tourism could serve as an important source of livelihood for such tribes, supporting long-term development. This study highlights community-based cultural tourism as a post-disaster livelihood revival approach which is beneficial for a resilient recovery. Culture could reduce disaster risk through a transformation to a livelihood source and further become the base of community resilience. Instead of promoting detached culture preservation, this study argues that a livelihood-relevant culturally innovative transformation could create a win–win situation for both post-disaster community recovery and culture inheritance. -

The study focused on the Atayal people’s mass conversion to Christianity in the early 1950s, which not only changed their worldview and cultural values but also altered their sense of belonging, as well as the idea of being an Atayal person. -

BECS IN VATICAN II AND BEYOND: ROWING, NAVIGATING RIVERS, SAILING ON1 Estela P. Padilla With insight born from a longstanding experience and life lived together with the people, the paper deftly marries the doctrine put forward by the Second Vatican Council – on what is the church and how to be ‘church’ – with its actual practice and application through the journey of the Basic Ecclesial Communities in the Philippines in the past 50 years. Culturally-sensitive in its theological approach, the paper gleans the stories and rich accounts of the people in the BECs and provides a remarkable and even radical picture of the faith and human life of these communities. The paper, thus, harvests a substantial, if not comprehensive, validation of the impetus of the change that Vatican II initiated in the Church. INTRODUCTION T he oldest BECs2 in the country (Tagum, Mindanao) are preparing to celebrate their 50 years of existence making BECs a fruit of Vatican II. Life in the BECs therefore is a way of receiving Vatican II teachings, a continuing interpretation of this paradigmatic church 1This paper was presented in Butuan City. The title was drawn out of the image of balangays - boats of ancient Filipinos (also called Butuan boat) used for trading with neighboring Asian countries in the 10th century. The balangays and their enterprising crew showcased the engineering, economic and communication/ negotiation capabilities of Filipinos five centuries before the Spaniards (who were supposed to have ‘discovered’ the Philippines) arrived. This paper is using this image of the balangay to articulate the creative and empowering journey of BECs in the Philippine chuch and in the wider world.
