Predrag Palavestra DOI: 10.2298/BALC1041155P Original scholarly work Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Belgrade Young Bosnia: Literary Action 1908–1914 Abstract: Literary work and criticism was a significant aspect of the public activity of the short-lived Young Bosnia movement, but an aspect which has been unjustly neglected in historiography or overshadowed by the political aspect marked by the struggle for national liberation. Much as the movement was unstructured, contradic- tion-ridden and often uncertain whether to give precedence to the ethical or the aesthetic dimension of literature, its openness to the pace-setting European cultures gave an impetus to laying the literary and intellectual groundwork for the moderniza- tion of not only the local literary scene in Bosnia-Herzegovina but also of the shared cultural space in interwar Yugoslavia. Keywords: Young Bosnia (Mlada Bosna) movement, literary work and criticism, cul- tural modernization, national liberation, Yugoslav idea he first certain signs of a literary revival, spurred by the work of mem- bers of Young Bosnia in the period between the Austro-Hungarian an- nexationT of Bosnia-Herzegovina (1908) and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (1914), were observable in the new generation’s critical attitude towards literary tradition. At first, the Young Bosnia literati, still lacking sufficient intellectual freedom and literary education, went no fur- ther than criticizing the local literary situation. Later on, having left their high-school classrooms and illegal literary clubs for Zagreb, Belgrade, Vi- enna, Prague, Krakow, Graz, Geneva, Lausanne, Paris and other European universities, they came to feel confident enough to embark upon critical reassessment of the Serbian and Croatian literary heritage. -

Defining "Balkan Slavic" The failure of the Yugoslav idea made obvious by the collapse of Yugoslavia posed the issue of developing new paradigms by which the literary and cultural legacy of the Southern Slavs can be discussed adequately in a political context now transformed. Two such paradigms are being currently proposed: the Balkan and the Central European one. This dichotomy reflects the actual split of the Southern Slavs along a borderline that separates two cultural-cum-political zones. INTERLITT ERA RIA 2015, 20/1: 35–49 Jacint Verdaguer, Andrejs Pumpurs and Petar Petrović Njegos: Three Moments in the Romantic National Epic of 19th-Century Europe MIGUEL ÁNGEL PÉREZ SÁNCHEZ Abstract. In the course of the 19th century, from one extreme to another, literary manifestations of nationalism have shown up in several different genres, and meaningfully in the epic genre, which is perceived, according to the Western literary canon, with its beginning in the Greek epics of the Iliad and the Odyssey, as a primary expression of the cosmogonic myths of an ethnic group in search of the national identity. This paper, through the analysis of the works of three major European poets, the Catalan Jacint Verdaguer, the Latvian Andrejs Pumpurs, and the Monte- negrian Petar Petrovic Njegos, each one of them writing without knowing the other two, tries to state that despite the obvious social, historical, geographic and linguistic differences separating them (which are also the subject of re- search), there is one common spirit rooted in the Romantic Movement, con- necting and providing them with similar motives and topics. Edward Dennis Goy The Sabre and the Song Njego{: The Mountain Wreath Copyright © by Jasna Levinger-Goy, Cambridge, UK 1 Edward Dennis Goy Edward Dennis Goy, born 1926 was a University Lecturer in Slavonic Languages and Literatures at Cambridge University from 1954 to 1900, author of articles on Russian, Serbian and Croatian literatures published in the UK, USA, Italy and former Yugoslavia. In 1995 he published The Sabre and the Song: Njego{ the Mountain Wreath and in 1996 Excursions, a book of essays on Russian and Serbian literature. At the same time he completed the book on the Dubrovnik poets Men~eti} and Dr`i} to be published soon. He also translated a number of novels, stories and poetry including Bulatovi}'s The Red Cockerel (Crveni petao leti prema nebu), A Hero on a Donkey (Heroj na magarcu), Radomir Konstantinovi}'s Exitus (Izlazak), together with his wife Jasna Levinger- Goy Selimovi}’s The Fortress (Tvr|ava) as well as Krle`a’s The Banquet in Blitva (Banket u Blitvi) which will appear in Autumn 2001, and, together with Dennis Ward, a selection of the poetry of Dragutin Tadijanovi}. He also translated Petar Hektorovi}'s Fishermen and Fishermen's Conversation (Ribanje i ribarsko prigovaranje) and Marin Dr`i}'s The Dream of Stanac (Novela od Stanca), both of which were published in the British Croatian Review and Gunduli}'s Osman, published by the Jugoslovenska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti. Recently he published A Green Pine (Zelen bor), an anthology of love poems from the oral poetry of Serbia, Bosnia and Hercegovina with the aid of Vukova zadu`bina in Beograd. -

Charles Simic, American Poetry, and Serbian Critical Reception Bojana Vujin, Sonja Veselinović University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Philosophy, Dr Zorana Đinđića 2, Novi Sad, Serbia [email protected], https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6769-5199 [email protected], https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6877-5222 A Serbian-born American poet, Charles Simic (1938) has been a staple of both American and Serbian poetic scenes for decades, though for different reasons. The paper examines the reception of Simic’s work in Serbian criticism, offering commentary on the translation of his poetry and its critical interpretation. Though Simic is undoubtedly part of American literary canon, and his work is informed by Modernist and Postmodernist American authors such as Williams, Stevens, or Ashbery, Serbian criticism has until very recently focused only on his origin and on the influence of his birth country on his work. By giving an overview of Simic’s major thematic and tonal elements placed within an American context, supported by numerous examples from his poems, we position him firmly within the American poetic tradition, while at the same time pointing out some elements of Serbian poetry relevant for his poetic development, like the influence of Popa, Tadić and Ristović. Shining a historical light on the reception of Simic’s poetry in Serbia, we uncover both the political and poetic reasons for the confusing inclusion of this American poet within Serbian culture. – Digital presentation of Serbian literature and culture at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020 Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia University Library Belgrade THE BRIDGES OF CULTURES – Digital presentation of Serbian literature and culture at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020 Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia University Library Belgrade The peaks of the Serbian literary culture to which always to return 20th century Ivo Andrić (1892–1975) is the most popular Serbian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961. He wrote novels such as The Bridge on the Drina, Bosnian Chronicle, The Damned Yard and The Woman from Sarajevo and a great number of anthological tales published in several exceptional short stories collections. His posthumously published work entitled Signs by the Roadside, sometimes compared with Pesoa’s The Book of Disquiet, has been the most popular and the most published Andrić’s book in Serbia in the last thirty years. Andrić was a prominent diplomat in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and he was in many important posts in socialist Yugoslavia. Following the writer’s will, the Andrić Prize for the best short 3 story or a collection of short stories in Serbian was established and it is awarded annually. His works are thorough studies of history and the past written so as to teach us about a contemporary man and the discrepancies they carry inside. That is how he motivates imagination about the past and ties a contemporary reader, turned towards modernity, to a story and storytelling. Miloš Crnjanski (1893–1977) is one of the most renowned Serbian authors, an excellent publicist and a writer who changed the direction of literary history.
