REPORT ON THE BLUE BOOK OF THE GOLD COAST COLONY FOR THE YEAR MI L—FINANCIAL. The revenue of the financial year 1911, which amounted to 451,111,632, an increase of £91,632 over the original estimate, surpassed that of all previous years, and exceeded the expenditure by £197,132. Railway Survey ... 4,677 3,094 1,583 Total ... 914,500 924,862 137,734 148,096 The estimated expenditure for the year was £989,390; the actual expenditure amounted to £914,500, being £74,890 under the estimate. f • The most noticeable increases, as compared with the expenditure of previous years, occur under the head Public Works Extra ordinary, £34,640, due to a larger programme of Public Works; under Railways, £33,396, due to an increased engine mileage and the consequent greater consumption of fuel and heavier station expenses; under Sanitation, £10,581, due to the provision of more labour and a more efficient service; under Public Works Department, £8,721, and Medical, £6,488, due to a larger estab lishment; and under Public Works Recurrent, £6,004, due to increased minor works and current repairs to Government build ings and to the maintenance of roads hitherto controlled by the town councils. - * The decrease under Repayment of Loans is4 attributable to the special payment to the Imperial Government of £134,380 in 1910. To agricultural development the prosperity of the Colony is in a large measure due; and the steady growth in trade is indicated by the enhanced receipts under Customs and Railways, the latter head showing the greater proportionate increase. The excess of assets over liabilities on the 1st of January, 1911, was £668,677; at the close of the year the excess amounted to £865,809, an increase of £197,132.
