I've read quite a few comments on this movie and The Bone Collector of them I disagree with and others I don't. Sure, it may be a little predictable and a bit 'all been done before' but there is a certain level of originality and uniqueness to it also. For starters it has a fantastic cast and both lead actors Jolie and Washington have won Oscars and thats says something. It can't be easy playing a paralysed man and remaining so still and wooden and he plays The Bone Collector frustrations and emotions so realistically that I would imagine a person actually would be like in real life. Jolie is charming, composed and works well with the camera. Her character is convincing enough and this goes for her performance. The support cast is fantastic too, especially Queen Latifa. The film may have the usual iconographic elements found in the The Bone Collector thriller genre but they are The Bone Collector for it to firstly conform and also progress. The Bone Collector am currently writing my degree dissertation on sexual subjectivity in psychological thrillers and this film is perfect for that. The changing levels The Bone Collector gendered representations is very interesting and both supports and detracts away from the current representations in society. I say, give it a go! Don't listen to people who have already seen it and didn't like it. If I'd have done that then I wouldn't have given it a go and my dissertation would have been short of argument! Did You Know?     Lincoln, Lincoln, I’ve Been Thinkin’ By Fearless Young Orphan The Bone Collector (1999) Directed by Phillip Noyce A casual viewing of The Bone Collector will probably provide an entertaining movie experience. There are big stars (Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Queen Latifah, Ed O’Neill), there is a sexy plot (serial killer investigations are always sexy plots) and there is an interesting twist on the mix. Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme, an expert forensic detective, textbook author, and decorated cop, who is now paralyzed from the neck down and must do all his detective work from a hospital bed surrounded by high-tech equipment. There is something of Rear Window in this, and something of Silence of the Lambs, in the way he takes a young cop under his wing and grooms her for forensics. Really, what could I have to complain about? Oh, lots. Lots and lots. I’ve seen it twice now. I hated it the first time I saw it. On the second viewing, for purposes of creating a Chunk, I found myself more disappointed in its missed potential than actively hating what it put on screen. Still, that’s enough to Chunk about. Let’s begin! 1. The Serial Killer. I realize I’m coming at this from the back end. Of course we don’t know until the last ten minutes who the killer is and why he’s killing. Naturally, because this is a movie, he is someone we’ve already come to know in the movie’s context. That way, it’s a shocking twist! Yeah, he’s been skulking around Lincoln’s apartment the entire time.

    International Journal of Communication 6 (2012), 501–529 1932–8036/20120501 Broadening the Scope of Cultural Preferences: Movie Talk and Chinese Pirate Film Consumption from the Mid-1980s to 2005 ANGELA XIAO WU Northwestern University How do structural market conditions affect people’s media consumption over time? This article examines the evolution of Chinese pirate film consumption from the mid-1980s to 2005 as a structurational process, highlights its different mechanisms (as compared to those of legitimate cultural markets), and teases out an unconventional path to broadening the scope of societal tastes in culture. The research reveals that, in a structural context consisting of a giant piracy market, lacking advertising or aggregated consumer information, consumers developed “movie talk” from the grassroots. The media environment comprised solely of movie talk guides people’s consumption of films toward a heterogeneous choice pattern. The noncentralized, unquantifiable, and performative features of movie talk that may contribute to such an effect are discussed herein. Introduction Literatures in both cultural sociology and communication endeavor to explain cultural preferences. Current research concerns mainly cross-sectional studies with individuals as the unit of analysis (Griswold, Janssen, & Van Rees, 1999; Webster, 2009). The majority of extant theories focus on linking cultural consumption patterns to individual consumers’ psychological predispositions (Katz, Blumler, & Gurevitch, 1974) or socioeconomic statuses (Bourdieu, 1984; Van Rees & Van Eijck, 2003). However, chronological changes in the consumption patterns are relatively underexplored (Tepper & Hargittai, 2009, pp. 227–228).
