He stated that cinema has progressed by leaps and bounds across the world and it was really heartening to see its growing reach in a country as diverse as India. Addressing a press conference here today, director Phillip Noyce spoke about his movies and the inspiration which lead him to the art of filmmaking. The master film director who is best known for his much acclaimed movies like ‘Clear and Present Danger’, ‘The Bone Collector’, ‘Newsfront’ and others talked about his life, his motivation to create cinematic masterpieces and what he intends to present to the audience in the future. Phillip Noyce is one of the most famous cinematic directors of the Australian Film Industry. A master of espionage films, Noyce is best known for movies like ‘Newsfront’ which won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) awards for Best Film, Director and Screenplay along with ‘Rabbit-Proof Fence’ which won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for the Best Film in 2002. Noyce has been one of the most successful Australian film directors in Hollywood and has been much acclaimed for his ventures in the American Film Industry. Films like ‘Dead Calm’ which released in 1989 turned Nicole Kidman into a star, the 1994 Tom Clancy spy thriller ‘Clear and Present Danger’ starring Harrison Ford, ‘The Quiet American’- a 2002 film which gave Michael Caine an Academy Award Best Actor nomination and the 2010 action thriller ‘Salt’ starring Angelina Jolie, have all stamped Phillip Noyce’s position as one of the most bankable Australian directors in Hollywood. -

Opening titles: Z Special Force was a secret operations unit of the Australian Armed Services in World War Two. It was made up of volunteers from all branches of the Allied Forces and came under the direct command of General Douglas Macarthur. Z Special carried out two hundred and eighty- four war time missions in the Pacific. The most publicised of these were the successful canoe raid on Singapore harbour from the 'Krait' and the subsequent Rimau raid in which all twenty- three participants were either killed in action or executed. CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978) broke ground in its native country for dealing bluntly with one of the most tragic aspects of Australian history: the racist treatment of the aboriginal population. Adapted faithfully from the 1972 novel by Thomas Keneally, the film concerns a young man of mixed race in turn-of-the-century Australia who feels torn between the values and aspirations of white society, on the one hand, and his aboriginal roots, on the other, and who ultimately takes to violence against his perceived white oppressors. This essay re-views The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith from the following angles: its historical context; its place in the New Australian Cinema; its graphic violence; and the subsequent careers of the film’s director, Fred Schepisi, and its star, Tommy Lewis. Keywords: The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith; Fred Schepisi; Thomas Keneally; New Australian Cinema; racism and colonialism Prior to the late 1970s, Australia was something of a cinematic backwater. Occasionally, Hollywood and British production companies would turn up to use the country as a backdrop for films that ranged from the classic (On the Beach [1959]) to the egregious (Ned Kelly [1970], starring Mick Jagger). But the local movie scene, for the most part, was sleepy and unimaginative and very few Australian films traveled abroad. Then, without warning, Australia suddenly experienced an efflorescence of imaginative filmmaking, as movies such as Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), The Getting of Wisdom (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), and Breaker Morant (1980) began to be shown all over the world. -

Lincoln, Lincoln, I’ve Been Thinkin’ By Fearless Young Orphan The Bone Collector (1999) Directed by Phillip Noyce A casual viewing of The Bone Collector will probably provide an entertaining movie experience. There are big stars (Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Queen Latifah, Ed O’Neill), there is a sexy plot (serial killer investigations are always sexy plots) and there is an interesting twist on the mix. Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme, an expert forensic detective, textbook author, and decorated cop, who is now paralyzed from the neck down and must do all his detective work from a hospital bed surrounded by high-tech equipment. There is something of Rear Window in this, and something of Silence of the Lambs, in the way he takes a young cop under his wing and grooms her for forensics. Really, what could I have to complain about? Oh, lots. Lots and lots. I’ve seen it twice now. I hated it the first time I saw it. On the second viewing, for purposes of creating a Chunk, I found myself more disappointed in its missed potential than actively hating what it put on screen. Still, that’s enough to Chunk about. Let’s begin! 1. The Serial Killer. I realize I’m coming at this from the back end. Of course we don’t know until the last ten minutes who the killer is and why he’s killing. Naturally, because this is a movie, he is someone we’ve already come to know in the movie’s context. That way, it’s a shocking twist! Yeah, he’s been skulking around Lincoln’s apartment the entire time. -
